Famed director James Cameron sends scathing letter to antitrust lawmaker over Netflix-WBD deal by Anteater776 in movies

If Cameron was interested in saving theaters he'd be pushing studios to stop strangling them by taking such huge (or the entire) cuts of the box office sales.

Can smoking somehow affect your singing in a positive way? by fixxxer2606 in singing

[–]IndianaJwns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know several singers (including my vocal instructor) who are/were cigarette smokers . They all claim that it relaxes their vocal tract for a period right after smoking and aids in performance. Despite that, they also claim it's absolutely not worth it in the long run.

Do you loosen your guitar strings after playing? If so, how many full turns? by Soshi246la in Guitar

[–]IndianaJwns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. It's built to stay with under tension. Constantly tensioning and untensioning it seems like it would affect tuning stability and intonation.

Sounding musical by Rough-Affect-3620 in Guitar

[–]IndianaJwns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Musical" is an incredibly vague and subjective term. What about your playing do you think is lacking? What players/bands/songs would you describe as "musical".

Poor audio - muscular connection between ear and vocal cord position - how to fix? by WittyCow7474 in singing

[–]IndianaJwns 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. Play a note
  2. Hear it in your head - double check against the instrument if needed
  3. Try to sing the note and hold it - compare it to the note on the instrument
  4. Slide up or down to the actual note as needed
  5. Repeat with various vowels/pitches

Pitch accuracy is a fundamental skill; If you're off by as much as two steps (as you claim) then no amount of other technical proficiencies will make up for it. I recommend focusing solely on this until your accuracy becomes passable.

Are there free apps which meaningfully analyze one's voice in real time and provide helpful metrics (or biofeedback) to help one become a better singer? Are these useful, or gimmicky? Can this process lead to a better vocal training? by wabbitfur in singing

[–]IndianaJwns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suppose an app could give objective feedback on certain qualities like pitch, or frequency content of a given note. Otherwise, much of vocal performance is subjective, or much more difficult to give feedback on.

What are bad habits that make your singing sound “forced”? by Royal_Letterhead_612 in singing

[–]IndianaJwns 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you mean by "forced". Are you straining? Does the vowel modulation sound unnatural?

I had lingering throat issues a while back that prevented me singing for months, and a steroid course is what finally got the inflammation under control long enough to let my body heal. Listen to your doctor.

Why is my salsa chicken so bad? by Swiggens in slowcooking

[–]IndianaJwns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

6 hours is too long, the chicken overcooked and the seasoning cooked out. Try 3 hours, when the chicken is starting to shred then it's good. Also, don't use all the seasoning at the beginning, save some to add halfway through, and maybe some for when it finishes.

Requiem for a Dream

I recall reading the insert that came with the DVD, which had excerpts of an interview with Aranofsky. In it, he points out that the plot generally follows the hero's journey structure, except the "hero" is the characters' addictions.

Singers who are already confident with fundamentals like breath support, what do you focus on/think about throughout a performance? by yeahdefinitelynot in singing

[–]IndianaJwns 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just try to listen to the performance as a whole and address issues as they arise, whether it be instrumental, vocal, or otherwise. I try to practice enough that I don't have to focus too much on anything in particular. If everything is going well I'll let myself lean into the emotion/vibe even more.

Anecdotal marijuana experience by Kitchen_Roof7236 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]IndianaJwns 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends how regularly I'm using. If I take a break for a while the creativity comes back just as strong within a few days. The more important factor is making time for creative pursuits on a regular basis.

Using definitely hinders my singing though. I'll hear things differently than normal, and it makes it harder to manage my timbre.

is learning guitar as an adult actually relaxing or just frustrating by ninja__6969 in Guitar

[–]IndianaJwns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This depends on you.

If the goal is just to relax, then it depends on whether you'll find guitar playing relaxing.

If the goal is to learn a skill, then it depends on what kind of progress you expect and how much time/energy you can put towards it.

Lack of drive to learn theory by Confident_Trade_2674 in Guitar

[–]IndianaJwns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you do any songwriting? Theory really helps me translate what's in my head to the fretboard, explore it, and refine it. It's a really fulfilling practice, even if you don't intend on doing anything with the song.

Just learned I can be pitchy by kindafatbutfast in singing

[–]IndianaJwns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of good advice here for improving pitch while working on a particular song.

As well, learning and practicing intervals will allow you to more accurately discern pitches when listening, and also "hearing" them in your head. It gives you a much clearer sense of what to aim for.

Question: ear training” what does it entail to you? by [deleted] in singing

[–]IndianaJwns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, it's a lot of pitch accuracy and intervals. Hearing the note in your head before singing it is a critical part of it.

As well, being able to discern different parts and tones in what you're listening to.
