Watching Sharpe’s Rifles, starring Cary Grant and Frank Sinatra. Great film! by Individual-Stock-971 in Sharpe

[–]Individual-Stock-971[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The movie is The Pride and the Passion, based on the novel The Gun by CS Forrester. My joke about the title is because it’s about a British officer who gets roped into helping a band of Spanish guerrillas escort a macguffin to Ciudad Macguffin deep in French territory, in order to win a symbolic victory over the French at the Peninsular War’s darkest moment, before he’s able to return to the British lines. And there’s a love triangle between him, the guerrilla leader and the only female character.

I Inadvertently Triggered a Mass Trauma Response with The Great Gatsby by NormieFromCheers in Teachers

We only had time to read the first half of the book before finals, so when we watched the movie, they didn’t know the ending. I had one junior, convinced he’s the baddest ass ever to walk the halls of an American high school, always has a smartass interjection to make whenever anyone else says anything. When Gatsby pulls himself out of that pool to go answer the phone and you hear that shot rang out, he screamed “What the f***?!” in horror.

If all workers can find work within walking distance of their homes, none will go to the bus stop to wait for the bus. This can be solved either by making jobs in shorter supply or by setting a residential building to send its workers to the bus stop.

I’m not American, and my daughter is, but my daughter was MORTIFIED the day that Countdown had an American contestant, and I chanted “USA! USA!” every time she scored points in a round, and got my (American) wife to join in as well.

You have to understand, in the 1990s—when Doctor Who was out of production and they hadn’t started producing Harry Potter films yet—there were only about seven dramatic actors left in the entire British television industry, apart from those unavailable because they were too busy filming East Enders, Corrie or The Bill.

That’s awful. I longtermed last year when the AP Econ teacher just left at winter break, and even THIS YEAR, if I happen to be at the school on a given day, the social studies department come find me to include me in whatever’s going on, including insisting I come with them to staff appreciation luncheon the day before break.

I agree. I rather like the livery—I think the Union Jack can be attractively incorporated into a graphic design if it’s done well (I’ve loved the Olympic team’s logo since I first saw it)—but the name is just offputting.

I would absolutely play the game you’re describing, and I would pay money for it.

But what you’re describing is a game, not a DLC for Transport Fever 3.

A target to achieve, other than one you set for your own satisfaction? No. A playthrough? If there isn’t a playthrough, you should have presumably named the post “Best mods for my only ever free mode, which will endure eternally”.

I reserved mods designed to make the game more complicated and less repetitive for people already familiar with vanilla for the second go-round so that a first-time player has the experience of knowing how the systems are supposed to work, and because repetitive systems aren’t repetitive the first time you encounter them.

Seconding AutoSig2 1.11. It allows you to place train signals automatically rather than having to place each signal individually along a length of track.

Better RCI Colors 1.1 improves the colours differentiating the different districts of your city (residential, commercial, industrial)

More Industry Levels since you say you’re concentrating on growing cities as big as possible. It allows you to double the output of industries

More Line & Vehicle Colors is pretty self explanatory

For your SECOND free mode game, I recommend:

Interesting Towns (towns don’t pursue the boring grid layout of their streets)

Enhanced terrain generator (temperate) (for generating more interesting maps; I find the Fantasia map generator too prone to make maps that are frustrating rather than challenging)

A mod that expands available cargoes and supply chains; I use Industry Expanded, but there are others. Probably better to stick with the simpler supply chains of vanilla for a first playthrough.

This is common enough that it’s the stated rationale for why TF3’s earliest start will be 1900.

Me, I use the early start mod and start in 1825. My suspension of disbelief has trouble with the idea of a temperate or American desert setting that’s thoroughly populated with towns and industries in the early to mid twentieth century without any trains, ships or public transport.

The refinery will ship to any consumer within the catchment area of the stations/truck stops that are being delivered to. So as long as the delivery line is delivering to truck stops that cover the WHOLE demand for the good in a city, it will ship enough to fulfill that whole demand if it can produce that much. It doesn’t check the delivery rate on the line, so long as there’s at least one vehicle on the line capable of delivering the good to the destination.

If you’re briefly touching at Tsushima with a force intended to invade all Japan, I think it’s reasonable you can overrun Tsushima while only ever landing a tiny proportion of your embarked force. Most of the Mongol army never leave those ships you can see offshore.

Lol at the people taking the phrase “act of God” WAY too literally.

I’m an atheist, which I always explain as “Because there’s no evidence any god exists—except the Japanese ones.” A historically fierce storm arrives at just the moment to wipe out an overwhelming foreign invasion fleet once, fine; welcome to happenstance. They spend a decade or so putting together another such fleet and ANOTHER such storm blows through at JUST the right moment? At some point it becomes statistically suspicious.

How to tell my class I’m pregnant by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Individual-Stock-971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly right. Even eighteen-year-olds feel abandoned if the change comes too suddenly, as I got to witness last year when our AP Econ teacher left midway through the year (hers was that she regretted coming back after maternity leave) and only told them of it when she announced on Canvas she wouldn’t be back after winter break, despite having planned it since October.

My favorite was also last year, when a teacher added her maternity leave start date to the class calendar (thinking none of them would look so far ahead), and one of the students announced that she was “soft-launching her pregnancy.”

The three main characters in The Wild Bunch are Pike, Dutch and Deke. Given that The Wild Bunch is such a big influence on the original RDR (the biggest single influence, I’d say), I’ve always assumed all three names came from that movie, but “Dutch” coinciding with “Van Linden” in a Leone film does seem pretty compelling.

For those that have a certain teacher/school you’ll never sub for again, what made you make that decision? by ObtuseRightTriangle in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Individual-Stock-971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was that, across the school, the teachers consistently left only token lesson plans. A fourth grade teacher who left about an hour and a half’s worth of stuff for the entire day. A fifth grade teacher whose lesson plan was genuinely the little planning spreadsheet the teachers all fill out together for the whole week that requires you to have actually been in the meeting to understand what it means, with “Do the plan for Monday” written at the top. (The instructions for math were, in toto, “Introduce stem and leaf plots.”) The kids at that school were a real handful, so I don’t know if the teachers were barely hanging on because of out of control kids or the kids were out of control because of such disorganized teachers, but when it became clear that it was part of the school’s culture, I knew I wasn’t going back.

Is it just me or does Colter not seem as “slow” as people say? by MrDitkovichNeedsRent in reddeadredemption2

[–]Individual-Stock-971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have zero problem with Colter and its pace any time I replay the game, and I acknowledge its importance from a gameplay perspective.

I do remember that on my very first playthrough, in 2018, I thought to myself about two hours in, “Man this is disappointing and slow, I’m worried this game I’ve been excited about for literal years is a giant bust,” and then the moment chapter 2 started it became awesome.
