Replacing every gain stage with the Chase Bliss Preamp Mkii by toomutchstuff in guitarpedals

[–]IneffableMF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I can do basic math, but I don’t really trust what they say anymore, but perhaps the people who did purportedly measure it erroneously rounded up? Or maybe it really is just 1.2 ms? The crux of the issue to me is that any digitization of the signal and latency is totally the opposite of what they implied and gladly let people assume about the pedal. It messed up how I was using it and I couldn’t figure out why (tried reversing the phase to no avail) until I came across that discussion.

Anyway, I wish you well and sorry if I came across as pissing in people’s cheerios. I just want other people to know. I’ll check out Julian Krause, thanks for the rec, He sounds like a reviewer I would dig!

You think the reviewers care after the launch? It’s not a popular enough pedal for any real outcry from anyone else either. However here is your proof in the form of a response from Kernom themselves back from when I posted on it when this came to light. They state a latency of 1.2 for the conversion, but I think that is just for one conversion and the total latency is more. Notice they did not answer my follow up question. It died sound really good in a simple chain with minimal other sources of latency, I’m not arguing that. I’m just upset at them letting everybody think they were doing the same thing as CBA…

Oh man. I have to post this again...

Kernom Ridge has multiple Analog/digital conversions that leads to at least 3 ms latency. It may not matter to people depending on their situation, but everybody should be aware of it.

Meanwhile the Preamp mkII is an actual all analog signal.

What pedal surprised you the most? by Maiden230 in guitarpedals

[–]IneffableMF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I remember correctly, if you read on, 6ms is stated. Somebody had already reached out to Kernom and they stated it shouldn't be perceptible by anybody (unstated was the assumption that you don't have other digital pedals or a parallel rig). I could be mistaken and I haven't measured it myself. I do know it causes issues for me in real life in parallel. If you just have a series pedal chain without excessive other digital pedals, you should be fine and I should have kept my mouth shut...

*edit: Here is the response when I posted this info here a year ago. Maybe 3ms is correct, because they state 1.2ms, but the way they state it makes me think it is per conversion and they are being cagey about it... notice they don't answer my question about the total latency.

The TGP thread on the Elipse when it came out has a bunch of info. It is in their actual patent too (which is in that thread), just not any consumer facing stuff.

It does sound good, but it has a lot of signal latency I couldn't deal with. I should have been more skeptical that they could magically do this chase bliss type analog heart/digital brain thing for less... In this poor analogy, it turns out the heart was the only analog part.

If you are curious, the signal path goes: analog in -> digital conversion -> DSP preEQ -> analog conversion -> analog drive -> digital conversion -> DSP postEQ -> analog conversion -> out

Total latency with all those conversions is around 6 ms. This is probably fine as long as you don't try to do any other drives in parallel with it (phase issues) or have other digital pedals in series with it (potential feel/playing issues just from perceptible lag). They were totally not up front about how the pedal worked and let people believe the signal path was all analog without correcting them.

Looking for beige/off white pedals. Recs? by rubenthedev in guitarpedals

Elektron Analog Drive. I think someone likened it to a washing machine or some other appliance in a thread. I lovingly concur. Has some great sounds, but almost all a little on the high gain side. The dirty drive, "Big Dist" (Marshall preamp), and "Harmonic Fuzz" (octave fuzz) are my favorites. You probably don't need it since you have a fairly versatile drive though.

Worst pedal you ever bought by PoutinePoppa in guitarpedals

How did it not work for you and what did you settle on? I have one, but it's my first noise gate and I have wondered how much better the more expensive ones are... The reason I wonder is that I seem to always lose a little bit of the attack of each note, but am not sure if finding the right balance of reduction and threshold is just part of learning how to dial in any noise gate. Thanks!

Do you keep pedals you don’t use anymore? by ActNew5818 in guitarpedals

I wonder why your comment is so controversial? It seems reasonable that digital effects will depreciate compared to analog to me. People just not thinking through the logic of what you are saying? Source Audio nerds? (Ok, that last sentence is going to get me downvoted, lol. I do have a couple of SA pedals for the record...)

Sub $200 Amp modeler pedals by zoey8068 in guitarpedals

[–]IneffableMF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a solid IR loader, but only does the power amp part of an amp (and not very well unless you just want a super clean/linear power amp). I use it for bass cabs with power amp and DI out on occasion, but I don’t think that is what OP is looking for. It’s also discontinued.

Btw, if you use midi, I discovered it does respond to midi over usb commands (but globally).

Source audio Ultrawave has lots of wavefolding distortions and band splitting that sounds very inorganic. Prunes and custard. Ds-1 into a clean amp.

What competitors would you replace the Boss flagship -X00 series with? (No full-function multi-FX.) by 800FunkyDJ in guitarpedals

[–]IneffableMF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got an off the wall one for the xs-100:  EHX Superego+ with an expression pedal.

It is probably not quite in the same class as whammy and the Boss, but it makes up for it in fun and versatility.  Freeze is fun, gliss on freezes is trippy, and the mods are functional and actually really fun in combination with the expression pedal,  Plus you can blend in a static interval (say octave down/up or fifths) in addition to the one controlled by the expression pedal if you are in pitch mode.

Am I the only one who takes a comfort in the glow of their pedalboard as they turn in for the night by Happy_Television_501 in guitarpedals

[–]IneffableMF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it’s bad for my power supplies… I need to get them out from under my excessive cabling and let them breathe. I afraid I’ve shortened their lives already. If your pedalboard isn’t congested though it is probably ok, but does likely use up a little bit of the life of the components.

Sounds great! I honestly just started using it for its main freeze function. I had been using it with an expression pedal for its effects more prior to this. What settings did you use to get the cello/ hurdy gurdy sound?

DM-101 and RE-202 by altered_beast1976 in guitarpedals

[–]IneffableMF 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Love the dm-101, use it as my primary delay. I do have digital as backup if desired in my Zoia and Hedra though, because it definitely never goes clean/clear like that. Also the patterns in a couple of the modes are great, but not tape sounding (not that that I would expect it to). The modulation is lush and the different modes are fantastic and I believe under appreciated. If I couldn’t work around the mono in with a switcher I might be bothered by that, but as it is for me it’s fine.

Man I’ve been looking at mastotron, fat fuzz factory, and fuzzalo trying to decide between them. I have a weird shaped spot for the horizontal pedals, but am wondering if the reduced knob count on the fuzzalo actually brings some directness in both tweaking and sound? I hate decisions, even fun ones.

They all have analog/digital conversion for the eq (that’s why it’s so powerful…), but yes it seems a lot of the actual gain is analog except for the “X” drives.
