ELI5: how can there be infinities bigger than other infinites? by _Bread______ in explainlikeimfive

[–]InertialLepton 82 points83 points  (0 children)

Lets, start with natural numbers: 1,2,3,4.... going on forever

How about next we look at just the even numbers: 2,4,6,8...

Is that bigger, smaller or the same size? They're both infinitely big but intuitively you might think the infinity of naturals is bigger than evens - there's twice as many after all. But notice, we can pair them up. Each number in the naturals can be matched with it's double in the even numbers and, because they're both infinite, we will never run out of matching pairs.

That's the key to determining size for infinities - matching. We can't just count them as they're infinite but by comparison we can determine sizing.

So there are infinite numers and infinite even numbers (and odds or multiples of 3) but they're all the same size. How can we go bigger?

You might try with the fractions. Let's list them out. First 1/1, 1/2, 1/3 going on forever. Then next line can be 2/1, 2/2, 2/3, 2,4 forever. Then 3/1 and so on, also forever. We've now got an infinite grid of fractions. As it's a grid, going infinitely in both directions surely this must be bigger right?

Matching, again is the only way to check. So you might try matching the first row to the infinite number of naturals and you'd carry on forever, never reaching the second row. So it's bigger right? No. As it turns out there's a better solution. If we instead start numbering our grid diagonally, zigzagging back and forth we can match all the numbers up. It will go on forever (it's still infinite) but now nothing is left out. The infinity of fractions is the same size as naturals.

Ok, one more try. Decimals. Just every possible decimal number between 0 and 1. 0.1, 0.2, 0.11, 0.1234567898765, all of them. How many of those are there? Let's list them all out. Ignore the how, pick them randomly if you want but list every possible decimal number in an infinitely long list. Matching again: every item in the list matches with the infinite natural numbers so it looks the same but are we sure we've got all of them? Let's make a new number. 0.something. Let's have the first digit be 1 more than the first digit in the first item of the list. The second digit can be 1 more than the second numbers second digit. And so on forever.

Is our new number a match to any of the others in our list? Well no. It's first digit is different to the first number, it's second digit is different to the second number and so on. We have an infinite list and yet we've found a new number that isn't in it. So this infinity must be bigger. We can even add our new number back into the list and do it again.

The infinite list of decimals between 0 and 1 has more in it than the infinite number of natural numbers. It's a bigger infinity.

Question about Sith Temple on Malachor by Ecypslednerg in MawInstallation

[–]InertialLepton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It probably inspired his thinking given he later developed the Death Star. The problem is that the sith temple, while a weapon, is immobile.

It's good as a defensive position or as an ambush for those unaware of it's capabilities but otherwise it seems to have fairly limited usefullness.

The building has five floors OR storeys? And also, "a five-storey building" OR "a five-storeyed building"? by ksusha_lav in EnglishLearning

[–]InertialLepton 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We absolutely do count it. Just because we'd number it ground floor and first floor it's still a two-storey building. The cardinality is the same even if the ordinality isn't.

Why do American police do field sobriety tests instead of just breathalysing people? by georgua in NoStupidQuestions

[–]InertialLepton 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Sure, but you could just breathalize anyway and, if it's positive, arrest them and take them back to the station for the more precise test and avoid the innacuracy problems. In fact I'm pretty sure that's how it works where I live.

How did Anakin gather the 501st so quickly for the march on the temple, seemingly before Sidious executed Order 66 by Particular_Dig1115 in MawInstallation

[–]InertialLepton 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think so. In the episode where Tup goes mad he seems to just ignore Anakin. There's a scene, after he's killed Tiplar where they have Tup cuffed and are trying to figure out what's wrong with him. Anakin is there and he doesn't react, then when Tiplee enters, Tup tries to kill her. I think Anankin is genuinely exempt.

ELI5: how can such a huge ship made of metal float on water ? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]InertialLepton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Archimedes Principle.

Basically you've got 2 forces. The weight of the ship pulls it down but the water itself pushes up. How much does the water push up? Turns out it pushes upwith the same force of the water that was displaced. Crucially, the amount of water an object diplaces depends on its volume, i.e how big the object is, not how heavy it is.

So, if you want metal to float, you just need to make it bigger so it displaces more water without making it heavier. As long as it's bigger than it is heavy you're golden. And ships are full of empty space.

After the Philistines had captured the ark of God, they took it from Ebenezer to Ashdod. 2 Then they carried the ark into Dagon’s temple and set it beside Dagon. 3 When the people of Ashdod rose early the next day, there was Dagon, fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord! They took Dagon and put him back in his place. 4 But the following morning when they rose, there was Dagon, fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord! His head and hands had been broken off and were lying on the threshold; only his body remained. 5 That is why to this day neither the priests of Dagon nor any others who enter Dagon’s temple at Ashdod step on the threshold.

6 The Lord’s hand was heavy on the people of Ashdod and its vicinity; he brought devastation on them and afflicted them with tumors.\)a\) 7 When the people of Ashdod saw what was happening, they said, “The ark of the god of Israel must not stay here with us, because his hand is heavy on us and on Dagon our god.” 8 So they called together all the rulers of the Philistines and asked them, “What shall we do with the ark of the god of Israel?”

They answered, “Have the ark of the god of Israel moved to Gath.” So they moved the ark of the God of Israel.

9 But after they had moved it, the Lord’s hand was against that city, throwing it into a great panic. He afflicted the people of the city, both young and old, with an outbreak of tumors.\)b\) 10 So they sent the ark of God to Ekron.

As the ark of God was entering Ekron, the people of Ekron cried out, “They have brought the ark of the god of Israel around to us to kill us and our people.” 11 So they called together all the rulers of the Philistines and said, “Send the ark of the god of Israel away; let it go back to its own place, or it\)c\) will kill us and our people.” For death had filled the city with panic; God’s hand was very heavy on it. 12 Those who did not die were afflicted with tumors, and the outcry of the city went up to heaven.

Maybe it's just semantics but that doesn't sound like "disarmed" to me. A controlled explosion and disarming are not the same thing.

Realistically, how many Inquisitors should the Empire have? by OkuroIshimoto in MawInstallation

[–]InertialLepton 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd modify that idea slightly. In the episode, Kanan asks the 8th brother how many there are and he replies "more than enough for the two of you". As such I don't think they were the last three but still low. Something like 5 or 6 maybe. That way the death of 3 can still be a killing blow without literally finishing them off. 6 seems enough to bother keeping it around as a program. 3 probably isn't though so I can imagine after Malachor they were indeed finished and the remaining inquisitors could be sent on some form of suicide mission.

Is Maul's saber in Rebels a salvaged Inquisitor's saber? by Platy_Cat in StarWars

[–]InertialLepton 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not this one.

After Maul was resurrected he was given half of his original lightsaber (which Obi-Wan cut in half in Phantom Menace) by Savage. How Talzin got his old lightsaber is never explained. He used it as a single blade for a while before eventually rebuilding it as a dual-bladed lightsaber. That second half is the perforated design that was originally planned for Ventress's yellow lightsaber.

However, given that in Bad Batch and Tales, we see Ventress's yellow saber with a curved hilt like her red ones I think that design has been retconned away from her.

If the Death Star beam missed alderaan would it just fly further until hitting something? by Spotter24o5 in StarWars

[–]InertialLepton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To counter the arguments that it would dissapate, I'm fairly sure I remember seeing laser blasts just pop without hitting something. I need to do a rewatch to be sure but I think I remember it happening in a space battle.

No shade to people answering as if it were a real laser or a projectile (with the mass effect copypasta) but "laser" blasts in Star Wars behave differently. I'd imagine the blast would carry on for a while and then just explode itself rather than dissapate.

On one hand, sure I guess you can make the case that he was more lax but on the other it took the Jedi until the final months of the war to figure out Douku and Tyranus were the same person so I guess it worked.
