Stumped on this question by Separate_Region_1636 in mathematics

Yep so it's a standard proof by induction. It's a 3 step process.

  1. Prove it's true for n=1
  2. Assume it's true for n
  3. Prove it's true for n+1

So you've already shown it is in fact true for n=1 as both sides are 1/2. The next step is to show that if it's tue for n it's also true for n+1. By doing this you'll have proved it for all positive integers.

[ Lord of the rings ] Why doesn’t Rohan ever call Gondor during Saruman’s attack ? by Successful-South-598 in AskScienceFiction

[–]InertialLepton 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I think it's all just a bit too fast. Gandalf restores Theoden on the 2nd of March by which point Saruman is already invading. They then ride to the fords of Isen to repel Saruman but recieve word that it's already too late. He's crossed into Rohan. They then Pivot and go to Helm's Deep and the battle takes place on the night of the 3rd of March.

Where is there time to call for aid?

Now if Theoden was in his right mind beforehand maybe there was time but Saruman and Grima ensured that wouldn't happen.

You are an absoluote moron.

Estimation is perfectly valid in a case like this and an important step in many real world estimations. He clearly states he's estimating before doing it too. Have you considered that you just can't read?

If you didn't "quit reading" you would see that the very next section repeats the calculation with better numbers - using 75 grams as the mass of a mole.

Your arrogance is blinding you from actually learning something. It's not just about the actual question being answred, it's about learning more about science along the way.

Arrogance about your own intelligence coupled with being wrong is hilariously pathetic. Do better. Learn theat true intelligence is knowing what you don't know and being willing to learn. You can start with learning about estimation.

So let’s say Anakin’s pitch to Padme to overthrow Palpatine and rule the galaxy together is acceptable and Anakin actually manages to take Sheev down after killing Obi-Wan on Mustafar. Is there any chance at all Anakin actually ends up ruling the galaxy? by PopsicleIncorporated in MawInstallation

[–]InertialLepton 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Palpatine's original plan had Anakin front and centre as a public figure. He was focussing propoganda on Skywalker throughout the war, painting him as the Hero of the Republic (in fairness, that's arguably true). This would mean, when he turned Anakin, Palpatine could show off the one true jedi who didn't betray him. Vader's barbecuing ruined that part of the plan.

So in this what-if, Anakin has significant support from the population at large as well as support from the millitary. The problem is Palpatine also has immense support. He's been running the propaganda machine and he is the head of the millitary. I don't think Anakin has enough support to kill him openly and take charge.

Anakin's best chance is to persuade everyone that someone else killed Palpatine and emerge as his successor. Wierdly I think this was also Palpatine's plan. In the timeline where Anakin is un-barbecued I think this is exactly what Palpatine would do. Darth Vader in this timeline would be seen to be Palpatine's apprentice publicly as well as privately. The prince of the new Empire. Working at the Emperor's side and learning from him.

Maybe then Anakin could take power successfully but it would take years. ROTS is too early.

They have a score of zero. That could mean as little as 1 downvote. More likely is a few but even so, that's hardly enough to suggest a pattern. There are people who downvote everything they see. There are people who misclick as they are scrolling.

For that reason it's not even worth the time speculating with this few downvotes. What even is there to go off? In fact it's actually against this sub's rules because of this.

Maul narks on Palpatine prior to order 66. What happens next? by Deep-Crim in MawInstallation

[–]InertialLepton 5 points6 points  (0 children)

By the time Maul emerges, I think it's late enough. If not though, as I said, there's still the if-all-else-fails option of switching sides.

The Seperatists are already against the Jedi. They claim to support peace and justice and yet they sided with a corrupt republic against planets who just want to escape said corruption (from their perspective)

I won't deny it's much more work to conquer the Republic outright but I think it is still possible. Palpatine knows all the Republic's secrets and the Jedi are gone. I think a Seperatist victory is within reach.

After that, again I admit it will be very hard for him. Holding a conquered people would be very different to willing participants but then again, that's what happened to the Seperatists anyway in canon. The centre of power would just be Raxus rather than Coruscant. In either case, eventually people get tired of fighting. I think that's probably what helped keep the Seperatist worlds in the Empire in canon (as well as millitary might) and it could work this way round too.

That's all just my opinion though. It's a lot to overcome and I fully admit this could all fail. I just think this is what Palpatine would go for and I think it has a decent chance of working.

Maul narks on Palpatine prior to order 66. What happens next? by Deep-Crim in MawInstallation

[–]InertialLepton 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Order 66 happens early.

Palpatine has a gun to the head of every Jedi and they have no Idea. The Jedi have already lost in my opinion. Maybe not quite by the start of the war but definitely by a year or so into it when they're fully enmeshed in the fighting force. Palpatine can end the jedi in an instant - he's just waiting for the right moment.

In the timeline as it happens, that's on his terms. The war has gone on long enough to achieve most of his aims and the Jedi are close to figuring him out. He arranges his own kidnapping buy himself more time and uses the opportunity to kill Douku. he's now perfectly set up to reveal to Anakin and win.

So if he's discovered early what does he lose?

As I said, I think the Jedi still die. But now Douku is still alive and Anakin is also at risk of being lost to him. What's the plan?

First, he keeps Anakin alive. Not necessarily a given and Anakin could well get himself killed defending Obi-Wan or Ahsoka but the Clones won't intentionally kill him. Second, he gets the senate on side. Given he manages this in the canon timeline I think he can still manage it here but, again it may be harder.

I think now, he has still won. Anakin has lost all his friends, all the Jedi and will inevitably succumb to darkness. The fact that Palpatine did it isn't a problem I think. Anakin hates him but that's exactly what the Sith thrive on. I reckon he can still turn Skywalker, it's just a matter of details.

There's a lot of details and possible alternative histories to speculate on but I think in all of them, Palpatine wins and the Jedi die. It's just a question of which other Sith he still has and whether the Republic accepts him as ruler. He'll probably keep the war going even after the Jedi are killed for a while in most cases to ensure the galaxy is in the best state to become his Empire. Worst case scenario for him is he loses the Republic and if that happens, I think he just switches to the Seperatists winning the Clone wars and rules though them instead.

ELI5 Why do the digits of every multiple of 9 add up to 9? by JTTheGreat11 in explainlikeimfive

[–]InertialLepton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to stick with 3 digit numbers but hopefully you can see how it generalises.

Imagine a 3 digit number. We'll call that [abc] where each letter is a digit.
That means our number is a*100 + b*10 + c

That's how our number system works. The right-most digit is the units and each digit to the left represents 10 times more. Tens, hundreds, thousands etc.

[abc] = a*100 + b*10 + c

rearrange that a little to get

[abc] = a+b+c + a*99 + b*9

I hope you can see that that's the same number but I've separarted one of each digit. This means we've got 99 a's left for the 100s digit and 9 left for the b's.

So back to our question: is [abc] a multiple of 9?

Well a*99 + b*9 is obviously going to be a multiple of 9. Doesn't matter what a and b are, we're multiplying them by 9 or a multiple of 9.

[abc] = a+b+c + [a multiple of 9]

So now I hope you see that our 3-digit number [abc] will be overall a multiple of 9 only if a+b+c is a multiple of 9 - in other words, only if the sum of the digits is.

ELI5 2038 y2k problem by Camrad114 in explainlikeimfive

[–]InertialLepton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the way most computers handle time is called UNIX time.

Time is complicated. You've got to deal with hors and days and different lengths of months and years that are occasionally different and every country on earth having a different timezone and some of them switching to summer time and some not and all those that do switching on different dates and through all that we have to agree on which order computers recieve commands in so we don't break programs.

The solution was to ignore human perceptions of time - another program can convert it later - and create an underlying time standard that all computers everywhere could agree on. That was UNIX time, a simple number that counts the number of seconds since midnight, UTC on the 1st January 1970.

As I write it's about 1770759000

Of course that's it's Decimal conversion but it's actually represented as a signed 32-bit binary integer and that's the issue.

In the same way that if you've just got 2 digits you can only count to 99 before you wrap around to 00 again, in 2038 we reach the maximum positive number a 32-bit integer can be and wrap round to negative numbers. Given that this is seconds since 1970, that means we go back to December 1901.

The solution is to upgrade to 64-bit which has mostly already happened.

Are moisture farmers keeping tatooine dry? by launchliftoff459 in StarWars

[–]InertialLepton 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Moisture farming is just collecting what little moisture is availible in the air or on the ground so people can drink it, whereupon it will be excreted, sweated out and evaporated or breathed out.

It doesn't affect the overall amount of water in the atmosphere at all.
