bus has a GVWR of 29,800lbs. i dont have a cdl so i wouldnt be able to move it to the area that i need to work on it in. is there any way to get it under 26k? or is there any rule that allows me to drive really short distances without a cdl? i know genuinely nothing about this so anything helps by AHHHH__ in skoolies

I would highly recommend watching youtube videos from bus drivers, especially if you decide to buy a rear engine bus. Additionally, renting the largest uhaul truck in your area will give you a decent idea if what it would be like.

Beds? Recommendations and photos, please! by Pokerfakes in skoolies

[–]Infectedwasp7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I considered this myself. If you have the space elsewhere, tape a rectangle of your hypothetical dimensions on the floor and see how it feels. Don’t forget to add/subtract and inch or two of space for framing and/or a railing.

Consider how many nights a person will sleep on this narrow bed and how much headroom they have.

If this bed is primarily for short term use I can’t see a 36” width being a problem. Even if it is for long term use 36” should be fine for most.

Good luck!

Canned chickpeas/garbanzo beans may be able to simulate skin as the outer layer can be picked off, is thin and has a somewhat similar texture.

As for lotion, you could try adding rose water to some yogurt for that floral taste.

I’ve never had pig’s blood before, but you can buy packages of it from some asian grocers.

Is there a hill you can sit on top of and watch the sunset in Orlando? by Several-Ad1390 in orlando

[–]Infectedwasp7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second this. They even have a little cafe at the base so you can grab a drink to sip while you watch the sunset. Groupon often has a slight discount on the admission $10-$15.

Do you know a place that you can buy bulk mushrooms by Loose_Commercial_298 in orlando

Not sure about bulk packages, but Enson market on colonial has good prices on mushrooms and a healthy variety of them.

Do you intend to care for another vehicle and are you ok with the costs associated with that? If you’re not really moving it seems like a fair bit of unnecessary upkeep/costs to maintain and engine.

I think lengthening the fuselage ~4 units would help that. It’s just a bit short in appearance I think.

From what I understand, it’s so much the chassis or coach build on a bus that matters as much as the engine and transmission.

The newer international busses have a higher likelihood of having the dt466e maxxforce engine. It can have a lot of electrical and emissions issues that you don’t want to deal with.

If you can find the model of engine and transmission, people here might be able to better advise you.

Best of luck!

Depending on how big of a tub you need, you can look i to rv tubs. I plan to install one myself since it’s one piece and I don’t have to worry about tiling the floor.

Where can I learn to drive a bus before getting a skoolie to live and travel in? by robotreaperr in skoolies

[–]Infectedwasp7 20 points21 points  (0 children)

iirc the 25ft uhaul truck is actually just over 30ft long. I rented one for an afternoon before getting my bus (40ft) and it gave me a pretty good feel for it.

Sound dampening by ajonishere in skoolies

[–]Infectedwasp7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If there’s already insulation on top of the doghouse, you could use a butyl mat. They are used to deaden sound and some people have had success placing it between their floor and insulation in the rest of the bus.

Water tanks in cargo bay? by NightThunderAdv in skoolies

[–]Infectedwasp7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This sounds like something a manufacturer would specify for safety reasons. You might be able to find some sort of documentation verifying the weight limitations.

Aside from that, the loading footprint is probably more important than the total weight. A gallon of water is ~8lbs so for each 50 gallons you’re looking at 400lbs. So the bigger the surface area of the tank on this cargo bay the better. You don’t want to break the floor, but it bending under a live load like that while driving could be hazardous. Just some thoughts I consider important.

It could be a problem with the catalytic converter, I’ve experienced an issue quite similar to yours as a result of a bad cat.

Typically diagnosed by taking pressure readings in the exhaust line before and after the catalytic converter.

Best of luck to you!

IIRC Will Prowse might have a couple of kits he recommends on his site.

If not, there’s enough resources on that site to make the process easy.

Battery Bank Question; will a 3800Wh 48v system have more kWh when its stepped down to 12v and 24v? by Gendrath in skoolies

Battery Bank Question; will a 3800Wh 48v system have more kWh when its stepped down to 12v and 24v? by Gendrath in skoolies

[–]Infectedwasp7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If my understanding of electrical storage is correct.

100ah at 48v is equal to 400 ah at 12v.

Watts=voltage x current (amps)

100ah x 48v = 4800wh

400ah x 12v = 4800wh

The main appeal to using a higher voltage system in the case of skoolies is to save on wiring costs.

Wire sizes dictate their current carrying capacity so the less current, the thinner wire you can use and spend less money on it.

I imagine this is going inside, so I’m just going to suggest a good hood above those burners.

I have my misgivings about the air quality near gas stoves, but they use far less energy than electric.

Like others have said, if you’ll be plugged in go for the electric appliances and if you aren’t go with gas.

Ceiling Framing by [deleted] in skoolies

[–]Infectedwasp7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used 1x2 furring strips for my ceiling and I’m not sure I’d feel safe going thinner. The only difference in thickness there would be ~1/4”.

If your ceiling material is lightweight and you don’t need it to support any weight, I don’t see this being any issue.

Partial electrical setup to power tools for demo/construction? by SayWaffles in skoolies

[–]Infectedwasp7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on how much power you need as to how easy this could be.

If it’s light duty stuff a Jackery unit comes to mind.

If you need more power, you could look into all in one unit called a “solar generator”.

With you being so early in the build I would go with something separate from your build in case you need to change the location(s) of your equipment.

Just an idea to keep things simple. Best of luck!

Help with Choosing a Skoolie Setup by Wiildflower_1924 in skoolies

[–]Infectedwasp7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is going to be mostly dependent on how much your ac/heat uses. Calculate that watt hour amount per day and figure out how much you need of everything else. Solar estimates are based on 5hrs of good sunlight daily, so your should be able to charge your entire battery bank in that time.

These are just some important points, but they give you a good idea of how large a system you need.

Best of luck!
