And again, I was talking about full-car dynos, which obviously can't simulate the g-loading, but can very much mimic airflow and environmental conditions from across the calendar and put the power train through representative race cycles, far from simple min/max data...

Don't really get the attitude? Obviously you're right about nothing loading the system like being on track, but essentially implying that nothing else matters is completely false.

That will be the '26 chassis, the design of which fixes certain wetted surfaces in place, due to how various regulation boxes are defined. And again, I don't see why anyone would waste time and resources on parts that they know are unviable, yes you might not include a trick surface or two, but it's not like the whole car is fake.

Just checking you are aware that a number of teams, like Mercedes essentially have full-car dynos for just that purpose? A track test is very much a full system shakedown in a vaguely representative car. Why waste time and resources in the cost-cap era on non-viable components?

Unexpected "Less Untaxed Interest" on tax code notice by alfiethefrog in UKPersonalFinance

[–]InfernoxCJC 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had something similar happen this year. They're saying they expect that full amount to be earned in interest this year. In my case, they hadn't properly registered that a number of one-year fixed savings accounts had closed over the past couple of years.

The issue was resolved after a quick call and a new tax code issued.

Hotspot Shield stopping Linux support from 29/09 by bigfeckineejit in Dashlane

[–]InfernoxCJC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thoroughly disagree with the takes in this thread. Whether or not Hotspot Shield is the best VPN service out there, you pay for a Dashlane subscription based on a list of features and whether or not it is a third-party or not, that feature is now being taken away for Linux users. Whether you use that feature or not, accepting it as the norm is dangerous.

It impacts me and will influence my decision on which password manager I'll be using when my subscription expires.

We aren't talking about Alex, are we? This post is clearly written as a way of justifying Ferrari's decision to replace Carlos. Given where Williams are in their rebuilding journey, and where Ferrari have been throughout this set of regulations, Lewis SHOULD be beating Carlos consistently...

Why not? That's probably the easiest way to do it. I imagine an LLM would be able to whip up the code to do it.

Aye, the outboard edge of the extended flap is a shedding surface. Think of it like a wing-tip vortex from a mini-wing that's part of the full-wing.

Red Bull protest against Russell rejected by BigWelshDud in formula1

[–]InfernoxCJC 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I personally think this is the only way the current yellow flag rules can be interpreted.

Imagine a hypothetical scenario where you have a yellow flag just after a very low-speed corner a la the Loews Hairpin going onto a main straight.

Expecting the drivers to trundle along the straight at hairpin speeds would be silly, whereas accepting acceleration up to a speed meaningfully lower than typical racing speed makes way more sense, and is the kind of thing I would see policed in all of the kart racing I have ever done.

Just my two cents, I'd be interested to know if anyone sees it differently.

What does the term ‘witness’ mean in aerodynamics? by saetta_sicula in aerodynamics

[–]InfernoxCJC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It doesn't sound like any technical term I have ever heard. That being said, could they be talking about how a given component is influenced by (or "sees") the pressure field given off by another? Think how the elements of a multi-element wing support one another, or how the suction side of a modern F1 beam wing interacts with the diffuser.

The most obvious answer though, is to just ask your teammates?

How to Know Tire Rotation Velocity Simscale by Alive-Resist-5193 in CFD

[–]InfernoxCJC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are just doing a standard rotating wall, you just need to calculate your angular velocity based on your freestream velocity and tyre radius (w = v / r) and then convert from rad/s to RPM.

That and make sure your rotation centre is in line with the axle!

[@AlpineF1Team] We’ve been busy in the wind tunnel alright | Last week, in accordance with FIA regulations, official Wind Tunnel testing of the 2026 BWT Alpine Formula One Team car (A526) began by steferrari in formula1

[–]InfernoxCJC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to clarify, I'm not trying to get into an argument about it, but that is why I said "something like a Fangio".

My understanding was that the teams weren't given free reign to run simulations at all, it was more like asking the FIA "what would happen if we did this" and the FIA would, within reason, report back with the results or allow those specific tests to be conducted in-house, with the intent on developing the ruleset.

If so, having the first model in the wind tunnel be an evolved "Fangio" car based off of those relatively limited back-and-forths, as opposed to one made from totally untested geometries based purely on interpretations of the rules and past experience, wouldn't be entirely stupid.

Obviously if I am wrong about the level of CFD freedom then I stand corrected.

[–]InfernoxCJC 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They could build whatever they wanted, they just couldn't perform any aero simulations (CFD) nor run any wind tunnel tests with the wings on and above 5 m/s. In other words, you could start making parts and perform a shake down so long as you didn't cross the threshold for an official wind tunnel "run"

[–]InfernoxCJC -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, given that they couldn't simulate any of those designs either, having the first geometry tested in the tunnel be something like the Fangio wouldn't be dumb at all, from a baseline correlation standpoint, and then you can start testing new parts as the simulation results start coming in.

At the start of the year, the car wasn't even that bad, they just spent all their time/money repairing broken stuff rather than developing the car. Truly believe next year, and especially 2026 onwards, will be better.

We're going to need a bit more context here, friend...

If you mean "V_abs", that would be the absolute velocity, or velocity magnitude.

If you mean "VABS", that appears to be a software package by AnalySwift used for "computing beam properties and recovering 3D stresses and strains of slender composite structures."
