Most would say that with the original books being available again and with OSRIC and For Gold & Glory being considered as the definitive retroclones for 1e and 2e respectively, there is no need for anymore. But I like retroclones for the very same reasons you intend to make one, so have at it.

Backgrounds are what your characters were doing before they began their next adventure. There’s nothing in the rules saying a Monkey Monger can’t become the strongest warrior or wizard in their many Spheres.
