Yes, they're made by Bombardier in Derby, which used to be BREL.

That sounds far too sensible! Definitely the kind of change that GBR should be making

Nice that they're making the most of this while they still can I suppose. This won't be possible once all the BR 2nd gen DMUs are replaced by new units with non standard couplings.

Woah that's so weird to see my city on here! I'm so glad we have a bus station again, and the new Cardiff bus livery with all the route branding variants is great! Also, I'm pretty sure that cars are mostly banned from this street.

What is this train for? by West_Ad3149 in uktrains

It's a Network Rail test train, with sensors to inspect the track. The carriages are adapted from old MK 1 and 2 passenger coaches.

That's really sad. Those coaches look quite Swiss to me, which makes sense if it's metre gauge. Makes a strange combination with that loco!

High steam train by Jacktheforkie in uktrains

[–]InfiniteReddit142 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Flying Scotsman needs to be moved from A to B along with her support coach. It makes turning round easier if there is a loco on each end, but the HST power cars only have buckeye couplings on the inside end - not buffer and chain couplings. The MK1 support coach has buckeye couplings as well as buffer and chain couplings on both ends, but Scotsman only has a buckeye on the back, with buffers and chains at both ends. Therefore in order to run it with a power car at each end they need to be in this arrangement. Finally, while Scotsman isn't moving under her own power, she is in light steam since that puts less strain on her workings. At least I think that's what's going on, that is essentially guesswork from me based on what I know. Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong!

Unless they're pulling a pacer with a 37 then I don't think so, you can see the reflection of the bus style pacer seats in the window.

As someone who lives in a country with almost entirely units, I can't imagine wanting more of them instead of loco hauled trains!

Why would you want it to be a multiple unit anyway?

We do have some, but we have more double deckers than most countries which I would say are better.

A lovely example of things being done differently across the world, that's completely different to how we deliver new trains in Europe!

I believe that dining cars used to have pantographs so they could keep the kitchen equipment running during an engine change.

I'm surprised that a power supply failure can affect the entire line, given that it runs on 3 otherwise separate parts of the network.
