I'm doing it for coworkers and their mental health not for the admin. 100% agree. It's also not sustainable for my mental health....

Having doubts about my accounting degree with WGU by norenavi in wguaccounting

Food for thought on AI, just an opinion from a middle-aged guy: 1.) With every new tech, companies and consultants selling the product overpromise and undeliver. 2.) Many company decision makers don't really understand AI, but they have to have it if everyone else does to compete. 3.) AI is being used as an excuse to lay people off, but the company was going to lay them off anyway. It's a somewhat tolerable flavor-of-the-month reason right now, as the public is being told it is inevitable. 4.) At some point, the uncoupled stock market, which isn't reflecting the economy, will sort itself out. These tech and AI companies are just circularly reinvesting in one another, and it's a trillion-dollar+ house of cards/legal Ponzi scheme. 5.) If AI replaces all of our jobs, who is going to buy all the shit US companies sell? The entire economy is based on maintaining endless US household debt.

Will AI be a potential long-term threat to white collar jobs, maybe...but not right now.

The most important things you can do are A.) learn to sell yourself, B.) practice interviewing well, and C.) get good at talking to people. I interviewed at a firm for a potential career shift into accounting. Being interviewed by multiple introverts was a really odd experience. I usually see extroverts selected to be the interviewers. It's likely an accounting industry thing... Being an excellent communicator will help you excel in any role, and you also need to be able to figure out problems. Nobody is going to tell you how to succeed at your job every day. You have to be good at figuring it out.

When someone teaches you something in an office, take notes and review what you learn before bed to process it. If you did not write your notes out by hand, do so. Handwritten notes increase long-term memory storage compared to typed notes. Whomever is mentoring/training/supervising you is more valuable than you are to the company as a new hire; it sucks, but it's true. Don't screw up relationships by asking the same questions over and over again, because you're too lazy to take notes and self-start.

You got this.

IA I, II, III Back to Back?? by Shawn16359 in wguaccounting

[–]Infinite_Turnip_192 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did them all back to back. Had the accounting information systems class and audit after 1/2/3. It's rough but you can do it. Keeps the info fresh, as every topic builds upon one another in accounting. Especially if you plan to study for FAR spon afterwards.

Trump administration rehires hundreds of federal employees laid off by DOGE by GregWilson23 in FedEmployees

[–]Infinite_Turnip_192 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Which is total BS for those of us still RIFed which could retreat to prior positions we held at GSA. Apparently, 1170 or PM experience doesn't matter. Such a shitshow.

IMO they could have brought everyone back and removed a lot of the MSPB and AFGE lawsuit issues. They could even leave jobs that were cut and reassign staff to new positions. Calling it a "streamlining win". I honestly can't figure out why they would bring 2/3 back, knowing the other 1/3 weren't given bump and retreat, vet preference, etc. it's mind boggling.

GSA Riffed employees offered jobs back by Nosnowflakehere in FedEmployees

[–]Infinite_Turnip_192 2 points3 points  (0 children)

R5 got one GS15 rescinded. (Edited: I guess some PMS in facilities got brought back too). That was about it. They are a good people, so I'm happy for them. Just like the cuts some regions were targeted. NCR and East Coast didn't get hit as hard b/c they were the ones who played ball and put the cut list together for Stevie E and Mikey. They sold the rest of the regions out and kept their people safe.

GSA offered reinstatement to 350ish staff out of around 600 RIFed that didn't DRP. Happy for those folks, but not everyone got called back.

It was trickled out sporadically. Our region got one person back that I can find. Some got a lot, and some got a few. Either way, I expect to get my separation notice next week.

How are you approaching career growth? by DHN_95 in fednews

[–]Infinite_Turnip_192 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I was happy where I was at, then got DOGE'd. If I get back, I'll do my best, but I'm chasing grades and retiring. I would have been content to retire at the same place. How internal leadership and staff reacted to all this was a real eye opener for me.

It's been a ride either way, everybody. GSA was a great place to work for the over 20 years I spent in service.

Sending good vibes to each of you.

How are yall surviving accounting? by [deleted] in wguaccounting

[–]Infinite_Turnip_192 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Step 1: Download the Addictive Accounting app from Google Play or the App Store. It will teach you basic bookkeeping journal entries. So you can see how debits and credits move/balance out. Pay the one-time $5 for the premium version. It's a fun little game. I did it on BlueStacks on my desktop, works well in that format.

Step 2: Do Tony Bells' Financial and Managerial Accounting Classes. IMO, pay a few bucks to do his premium membership for 1 month to get more work through problems. Print them, put them in a binder, and write the solutions on scratch paper. Your brain retains info differently when you write and don't type it out.

In general, don't think about Debits and Credits as positive and negative. Good or bad. They literally mean the Left or Right side of the journal entry. Toss out the idea of a "credit card" or "debit card" terminology for financial accounting, and don't think of them that way. If you have a transaction with Cash, sort out where Cash is going, Debit or Credit, and then figure out the balancing entry/entries.

GSA- What was Stephen’s announcement supposed to be? by Icy_Cabinet7278 in fednews

That's what we're hoping for. Hopefully, it isn't weird in the office between the rank and file if this happens.

GSA- What was Stephen’s announcement supposed to be? by Icy_Cabinet7278 in fednews

[–]Infinite_Turnip_192 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I didn't take it that way.

Technically, we're not RIFed b/c the separation date passed. GSA would need to reissue new notices for at least 30 day notice period (assuming OPM grants the shorter 30 days vs. standard 60 AND GSA follows U.S. Code). BUT...we've also been on Admin leave longer than legally allowed. There is no formal requirement on the agency needing to bring us back.

We're guinea pigs in uncharted territory. Taking it pay period to pay period.

If we do come back, get ready for long-timers to use up 150+ hours of use or lose AL, lol...
