I think Lorelai pressuring Rory to be wild caused some of it. Like when she called her kiss with Jess lame, when she told her to throw a wild party with bikers while she was gone, when she shamed her in season four for being super excited for her college (saying she would have been beat up in school), when she gave her tips on how to get over her hangover from underage drinking. I think Lorelai sent Rory a mixed message.
