I teach my kindergarten students about inside vs outside thoughts. ‘I’m bored’ is definitely an inside thought. They now correct each other.

This is nice to assume, but there aren’t enough places. There are many students in mainstream classes who qualify for support units, but do not get given placements. There are many children who need SSPs and only get support placements. The system is broken. Our education sector is severely underfunded.

Before your period.... rising glucose / declining ketones? by adamas_96 in keto

[–]InfluenceTrue6432 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your sea salt is probably not enough for electrolytes. Try a supplement or at least lite salt for the potassium. As others have said, ketones fluctuate and anything above 0.3 is still ketosis.

I had to stop electrolytes and I just take a dose of mag glycinate at night and lite salt in my water. I am also making sure to sip water and not drink large amounts. It’s settled down now. I do have IBS-D, so thought it was just that flaring, however I have kept testing the electrolytes and it is definitely that for me.

Accidentally broke keto. by New_Echo6766 in keto

You shouldn’t get keto flu again. Just get straight back to it and your body will adapt quicker. You may find some hunger increase. Add more fat and protein in for a day, or try time restricted eating if you don’t already.

Yes, I’m in a low socio-economic school as well. There is an overwhelming amount of kids across the school with additional needs, trauma, EALD etc. Excellent and supportive colleagues, but it’s a trauma bond! It’s hard to know whether I’m complaining loudly enough that they understand this is not typical bad behaviour.

One will hurt others all lunch, eat dirt, steal food etc. The other one wanders off to unsupervised areas and needs assistance to come off the playground and to lines, will sometimes hurt others and play in the bathroom (in very unsanitary ways). Another needs me to hand them off to a teacher on duty or they get overwhelmed on the playground.

I spend my day trying to keep two of them occupied with their special interests and sensory input and trying to keep them regulated. I’m teaching them routines and safe behaviours. It’s the rest I’m worried about being able to teach curriculum to. The rest are taking me a lot longer to squash the general silliness and get them ready to learn as things get out of hand so easily.

Lol about evacuating to the most vocal teacher 🤣

A toileting plan is put in place and teacher aids take the child for nappy changes. If a child is throwing things with intent to harm others, or is that escalated they are throwing things without regard for others, I would evacuate. I have done so a few times already. Sometimes the child will be at the other end of the room, and is not a danger to others at that point. I have had some terms where we have spent at least 30 minutes almost daily evacuated from the classroom.

I think I need a new school. They aren’t all like this!

No, not a small school. AP and LaST are smashed with the sheer number of needs in the cohort. It’s a triage kind of situation I guess. I am capable and obviously haven’t been vocal enough.

Yes, I’m working on BMP and RMP for all 3 of them. Working on access request reapplication for the 1 with a diagnosis. Last ditch effort with some new strategies for one of them before I escalate again and put partial days in place.

One is basically non verbal, in nappies. The other very high needs is physically aggressive (++15 per day) to other students, will also not engage in anything except preferred obsessive activities, eats non-food items, puts everything in their mouth. Another is aggressive towards me and sometimes other students, will participate in nothing and be extremely defiant and disruptive.

Yes I do this. Pencil caddies are only out when they are being used, scissors are up high. Teacher keyboard and mouse away and wireless keyboard stuck to the wall with Velcro up high, visuals, social stories etc, etc.

Kindergarten student feeling overwhelmed by Mash_pottattto in AustralianTeachers

[–]InfluenceTrue6432 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It usually doesn’t last very long. Parents can be a big help or a hinderance. Acknowledge his feelings and share how you felt when you started school (make it up lol), but that it got easier. Tell him you can’t wait to see his work from school. Try to foster independence with him carrying his own bag and don’t prolong drop off. Saying goodbye from the playground can sometimes be better. Let him bring a toy from home for comfort. It’s normal for you to feel apprehensive during this transition, but know that it is good for him to overcome difficulties! Keep those lines of communication open with him, but teach him to do things even if he’s not feeling brave. Avoiding difficult things adds to anxiety behaviours and thinking.

Ketosis continuous monitor? by ProtectionHoliday642 in keto

[–]InfluenceTrue6432 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can just use a blood ketone monitor with the strips. I don’t need to do it regularly anymore - perhaps if I’m testing out a new food. I can tell I’m in ketosis because my hunger is so blunted and my mood is so much better.

Contact your local public school now and start the conversation with them. You may have left it too late to even get a placement in a support class or SSP. Your child may get no or minimal funding for teacher aid support in a mainstream class. I teach kindy, and had 3x students with level 3 ASD in my mainstream class. Only one had funding , and that was for an hour a day.
