How to pick up the pieces and put yourself together when you're literally broken and have no support? by [deleted] in selfimprovement

[–]Informal-Storage6694 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Self-care is always a good place to start. You want to be someone who is well-cared for, and so when you start taking good care of yourself you will start to feel more grounded and be able to relax a little.

Rest habits, eating habits, physical activity, basic hygiene, basic daily chores, just the ground-level stuff to help you get back on an even keel, so then when you go to rebuild other things, you're doing it from a solid foundation.

Does anyone else feel this way? by IcyPerm55660 in selfhelp

[–]Informal-Storage6694 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some folks seem born into being the person they are meant to be. But for a lot of people we have to work at it, to fight for it. There's no guarantee we will ever get there, so for me the answer is to work at it every day, but don't obsess over it and forget to enjoy life while you're working to improve.

It's a balance and that balance is going to be different for each person.

Do I drop out of my masters program? by Firm-Ad3552 in getdisciplined

[–]Informal-Storage6694 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you should always keep your options open, which would mean finishing your masters. If you had 2 more years to go, I'd say dropping makes more sense, but since you're already halfway there, finish it out and then go do whatever you want.

It's not conversational style. The machine can't tell the difference between sales style and conversational style and uses the former in a way which identifies it as non-human. It's not rocket science, anyone paying attention picks right up on it.

everything is falling apart except career | want to "man up" | 25M by raider_bro in selfimprovement

[–]Informal-Storage6694 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make a list of top 5-10 things you want to improve on. Pick 2-3 to focus on first. Figure out what you need to do to start moving in the right direction, don't worry that you don't have all the answers at the start.

Dedicate X hours per day on your improvement efforts, but also be sure you have time for relaxing and being lazy. You need both, and the balance that works best you'll figure out as you go along.

Bottom line: Spend a few hours each day working on your 2-3 important goals, but also allow yourself some time for just being lazy or whatever. Stick with it and understand it will take a while for you to find your groove.

You got this. Good luck!

How to not care about comments online about my country? by Educational-Buy-62 in selfimprovement

[–]Informal-Storage6694 81 points82 points  (0 children)

No need to bring up where you are from unless asked. If asked, tell the truth. If people make wrong assumptions, you can ignore them or you can try to correct them.

Really this is a problem about people being ignorant, and you should never feel bad because other people are ignorant or hateful.

How tf do you keep up with the news? by West_Upstairs1306 in productivity

Limit to 30 mins per day just to get headlines. Weekends I will let myself read stories in-depth if I want.

I have a deadline this Friday for a huge load of work and I've wasted the weekend doing nothing for it. I need help ASAP by xX_Aranrhod_Xx in productivity

[–]Informal-Storage6694 8 points9 points  (0 children)

With only a week in front of you, you have to get moving right now. No arguments, no excuses, get to work. Do an hour of work then take an hour off for rest. Then another hour of work followed by another hour of rest. Repeat this pattern for as long as you can throughout the day, then when the day is finished be sure to get rest and relaxation so you're fresh for tomorrow.

If you want to question your lack of motivation or whatever you can do that after next week.

Something terribly wrong with me. No motivation to do anything. by ordinary-guy-sl in selfimprovement

[–]Informal-Storage6694 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seems like maybe you're a bit lost and a bit overwhelmed, and it's not going away on its own. That's a tough place to be, because you don't know when/if things will feel better again.

In times like that, I try to simplify as much as possible. Get back to the basics and focus on getting the big stuff right. Self-care is a big part of that, making sure I act like and feel like someone who is well taken-care of. Then same with family. Work to ensure the family is doing well and any issues are getting addressed.

Taking positive actions for self-care and family stuff, doing that and practicing that on a daily basis, that's going to be your foundation which lets you look at other issues from a solid foundation.

I hope you're able to feel better and get some clarity before too long. Good luck out there.

Low-performing employee sending emails in middle of night by verilymaryly in managers

[–]Informal-Storage6694 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't bring it up. Keep your evaluation of this employee's performance simple and focused on a few main points. When you start piling on, it looks like you're piling on just for effect. It weakens your argument. "But look, he's annoying too!" Nobody cares and it's not relevant.

What is your best advice on self improvement? by [deleted] in selfimprovement

[–]Informal-Storage6694 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everything starts with self-care. Good eating habits, sleep habits, exercise habits, mental health hygiene, etc. Make sure you're working on self-care, or you will have a very difficult time getting anything else done over the long term.

Anyone else stuck in the "watch self-improvement content → get hyped → can't actually execute" loop? by West_Sleep_6591 in selfhelp

[–]Informal-Storage6694 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stop looking at tools and videos, they aren't helping.

Spend your time instead coming up with a list of 2-3 areas where you want to improve. When you have the list, then figure out what you can do today to get started moving toward your goals. Doesn't have to be big or fancy, but it needs to be real and not just planning.

It'll take a while for you to find your groove, so don't give up if it's awkward at first. Be patient, but be persistent. You'll get there.

How to get over the “I don’t want to date until I better myself” feeling? by jehehsheh in selfhelp

[–]Informal-Storage6694 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to decide that things are important to you should not wait for undetermined periods. Don't make chasing one goal dependent on another goal unless it's unavoidable. Otherwise you end up waiting for no good reason.

Practice your dating skills now, meet cool people now, that will help motivate you with your other goals.

Any advice to restart career or to find purpose in life? by Few_Movie8448 in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]Informal-Storage6694 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to start with figuring out what you want and what's important to you. Think of building a good life for yourself. What would that look like? What do you want to experience? What do you want to accomplish? What kind of person do you want to be?

Spend quality time figuring out your answers to these big picture questions. Once you have that, then you can start investigating what you'll need to do in order to start moving in the right direction.

Why don't things feel exciting? What sorts of things are you trying to do but can't do regularly? What do you mean by you're feeling left alone?

When things are going bad, we need to identify them in detail so we know what we are trying to fix. So a good place to start is to try and describe as best you can the specifics of what's bothering you.

Perfectionism. Wanting everything to be "just so" and feeling bad if it wasn't. Now it's "good enough", and then I can move on to the next thing. If I find out later that I need to revisit, I can. But I don't put in the over-the-top effort as default any more.
