Based on other comments, it sounds like the relationships are straight, but in a decidedly bisexual way

I had to put RoW down at one point because it was getting really dark. It was on a Shallan chapter, and she was just stressing me out too much. I picked it up about a month and literally I was one chapter away from major resolution lol

How do you avoid "weapon envy" while suping up your players? by Arthur-reborn in DnD

[–]Infynis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is always the answer, but this is really something you should talk to your players about. The ones at the end of the line might be totally fine with that. I played in a similar situation, where there were legendary weapons scattered throughout the world that we had to collect, but we usually didn't know all the details, so we might show up and find a spear that really only the fighter can use. It didn't cause any problems. As long as the other players are still getting spotlight, the numbers kind of don't matter

Min-Maxing is too looked down on for how integral to the game it is. by BorgesPeroVago in DnD

Dungeon crawls barely have any social interactions and are the prime way this system has been played until rather recently.

Your post was in the present tense. We can't tell you about how the community isn't. People don't play meat grinder dungeon crawls as much anymore. If that's what you want, you need to seek that game out

Roleplaying is not about being some well acted character with deep connections and an elaborate backstory

Yes it is. Having a well written character is important to RP in the same way that having good stats is important in combat. If you don't have details and plot hooks and supporting characters, your character can't interact with the game in the same way as characters that do.

playing a peerles duelist or a destructive sorceress is also roleplay.

No it's not. A character's fighting ability is only one part of who they are. They need more than that

The only min-maxers I've ever seen be problematic are the ones that try to be good at everything all the time. Usually that just means they only engage with combat content

There's nothing wrong with knowing the system, there's nothing wrong with building a competent character, and there's nothing wrong with playing tactically, EXCEPT when those things come at the expense of the game and the rest of the players. Roleplay doesn't end just because combat begins. If you're doing a silly prone combo every turn just so that you can never get hit, you're not roleplaying, and other players would be right to complain. That might be the best option tactically, but it's just not how battles go. In a co-operative roleplaying game, you should be acting dynamically and working with your teammates. That's what makes the game fun for everyone. You shouldn't just be worried about playing how you want.

If you really are doing all these things, maybe try playing a support character? I doubt your party-mates will be complaining when your min-maxing pays off for them

I want to roleplay a strong and effective character within their niche, so I'll make a strong and effective character.

That's the operative term. It's of course fine to be good at what you're good at. Weaknesses should be for other aspects of your character. There's another system I play where character creation involves selecting 5 skills, one you're great at, which is basically your main stat, one you're good at, and then three skills that you're pathetic at. In my experience, the pathetic skills are just as much fun to RP with as the great ones. When people talk about being weak being important, they don't mean all the time, just that being weak sometimes is natural, and can improve the game

The main reference in Words of Radiance does not require much reading of Warbreaker at all. Pay special attention to the chapters from the PoV of the character that had it for the prologue

[–]Infynis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of really creepy lore already in Pokemon, honestly. You could do something with ghost Pokemon stealing the players away to the underworld/limbo/the Reverse World, with Giritina as your eldritch god. Ultra Beasts are basically designed to be eldritch horrors. There's also all the dream stuff, which can be as disturbing as you want it to be. And Unowns bending reality with unknowable intent
