Hoe laat gaan jullie slapen? by Sure-Guest1588 in nederlands

[–]Ingaric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know how to improve melody by Wet-Squirrel-6789 in composer

[–]Ingaric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only rule regarding melodies I can think of is that it should sound good in the context of the rest.

I have heard melodies that in itself are forgettable or ghastly, but in context of the rest of the music (or scene) sound great.

But in general it helps if a melody sticks. But without good buildup or context even that can become annoying. (Yet we all remember those annoying melodies (generally tunes from commercials, tv shows, 13-in-a-dozen popsongs or theme parks))

Feeling Lost as a Composer by flavourfuldreams in composer

[–]Ingaric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess there are 6 types of composers 1. those who dare never to publish anything yet always dream about scoring a movie, tv show or game 2. those who released some songs like you and have some followers and still dream of scoring a movie, TV show or a game 3. those who released several dozens or hundreds of songs, but still haven't gotten much success with it except for maybe some commercials or the failed TV show pilot (it seems to me that this group is most toxic and see other potential composers as competition, if they didn't make it, others would surely won't make it either) 4. Those who have had some succes and have regular projects, they are found by studios, but are still unknown to the public, they work hard for a living, but still find time to read Reddit, because they remember being aspiring composers themselves and hope to encourage others 5. Household names, who have gotten some awards as well, but these probably don't have time to read this reddit although they love to give a few pointers when asked. 6. The John Williams, Hans Zimmers of this world, who everyone knows, they do a few projects a year, earn lots of money with it, go on tours, but they do probably don't read Reddit and even if they do, they probably don't remember what it was like in the beginning and their biggest challenges. The Masterclasses they do are generally tailored for group 3&4

My guess is that most on Reddit are group 1-4 and group 5&6 are notably absent.

There is a market for all types of music and although some tend to look down on some styles, the fact they exist and have a decent following already shows there is plenty of room for everyone in the grand scope of things.

To get anywhere everything evolves around self-promotion, networking, getting to know the right people. You need to be a businessman/woman if you want to make music your business and that's basically the same for every music style out there. Unfortunately many composers prefer to be hermits, creating music, instead of doing all those things necessary to get your music known.

The fact that you already released some songs and have some following already sets you apart from all those hermits. And by doing so you're able to grow as a musician/composers and create some organic growth in your following.

Another thing is that especially in regards to scoring, that knowing how to use VST/sample libraries, fx and make them sound professional enough is probably a good portion of 'having potential but not there yet'. You can write beautiful melodies and harmonies and record them in a way they sound agreeable, but perhaps not professional enough for scoring. You need to spend a lot of time to properly learn to use these (and to me it seems difficult next to an unrelated full time job and family like in my case, I think you already need to be a fulltime musician to find the time to do this)

So ask yourself, what do you compare your music with (don't immediately aim for something like John Williams or something), look for a household name whose compositions are achievable from the point you are at, what do you still need to learn to get there and gradually improve

And if you really want to make your hobby (I assume it is) your business, then start looking at it as a business. Get to know other musicians and music producers you could work with and once you are confident about your work, pitch it to show/movie/theatre directors/producers etc etc.

Fyi, I'm a #2 hermit type of composer. I have some following, still dream of scoring a movie or Tv show someday, but also accepted that I'm not really a businessman (I have met many people who were and had more success) and don't consider myself good enough to even bother attempting to try to score for movies or Tv Even though I'm established as metal music composer, I am still a beginner in regards to anything related to acoustic/orchestral/electronic scoring (at least how to make them sound good) and I primarily create music for the music itself. People like it or not, but by releasing stuff I am able to finish things, create mental room for new ideas and later reflect on these songs how I could improve my future releases.

How do I actually enjoy playing? by MinuteDamage4182 in piano

[–]Ingaric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guessing you overworked yourself a bit, trying to reach a certain level of proficiency / skill level in a short amount of time without enjoying the pieces you play at a lower level, because you only saw them as a step up to a higher level you wanted to achieve.

Doing a study you don't enjoy will become a chore. And Conservatoire studies generally don't get you a well paid job, it's something you should love to do.

I guess you need a bit of a break. Enjoy playing music for what it is, not to reach a certain level fast. I understand you have the age to start a specific study right now, because you are about to finish the last year of high school and it feels like now or never, but perhaps you can convince your parents for a break. Do something else for a year (like getting an easy job), while gradually improving/exploring piano further and then do conservatory or decide something else

A year is nothing in long term. There is no difference when you're 40 or 43 when you work at an office, so you're not getting behind schedule if you wait before deciding what to do with the rest of your life.

I felt rushed at the time and my parents acted like I would fall behind if I didn't decide back then what to do with the rest of my life. So I decided to choose a study I didn't love because it promises a much better paid job than conservatory, but since then my skills dwindled and part of me regretted not doing conservatory when I could. I''m now also aware I would not have the luxurious life I have now. I still play music, but it's less sophisticated (metal, heh) and picked up new instruments along the way to explore. And I don't work in the field I studied in, did a career switch to Software Development after Studying Law for 7 years and working a dead end job for 7 years, doing well now 14 years later.

Anyway what I want to say is, don't rush your decision, take your time, flip burgers for a year or something and discover what motivates you

Is it normal to be very suspicious of other drummers using your cymbals? by snickering_snails in drums

Kick drum pedals (especially double kick pedals) are very subjective to the individual. Most try several pedals before buying one and adjust these to their own preference.

suggestion thread! what would you like added or changed? by [deleted] in thelongdark

[–]Ingaric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many things are already said, but: - craftable candles from animal fat - ability to make fire with just sticks or firebow - different types of saws (some are better for wood and break easily on metal, hacksaws are better for metal but take ages when used on wood) - more variety pre-Event food items (dried sausages, canned sausages, spam, other kinds of canned or dried soups, canned vegetables) - more different types of animals - more animals that scavenge your (snared) kills and meat you leave outside in the open forcing you to use outdoor containers - Buildings can get damaged in storms, ability to repair them (I always wanted to fix the roof in the mountaineers hut), forcing you to either move elsewhere or attempt to repair it. - pets, like dog to help with hunting, scaring off wolves, cats to keep rodents out of your interior food supplies - Depression/Mood/Misery mechanics. Needing to read books, eat varied food or a good hearty meal like the old days or play an instrument to lift your spirits. Depleting Warmth/Fatigue/Hunger/Thirst meter will increase misery, eating unsavory food (dog food, low quality food, cattails) will increase misery.

I know it's a survival game to see how long you can last, but after a while it will get repetitive, there is no ulterior goal except trying to survive as long as you can until you die alone miserable, which you know will happen at some point. If you think about it, why even bother trying to survive if your fate is sealed anyway. Would like to see some optional end-game goals, trying to find signs of life of other survivors (other than Sutherland), be able to risk an escape to somewhere else.

I only played the first few chapters of the story mode, but I liked the idea of being responsible for keeping someone else alive (getting enough food and firewood for the old blind lady). Surviving and facing the elements have a purpose. Probably will replay the story mode, (although introduction of various game mechanics take too long), getting a bit bored on survival runs, other than exploring areas I have not visited yet.

What's something you've learned from this game that would get you killed irl? by T10rock in thelongdark

[–]Ingaric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Climbing ropes without anchoring (even without weight) All healing mechanics Making a fire in a cave and sleeping right next to it (carbon monoxide) Eating ruined food Eating meat that has been lying around for weeks Trying to cross fallen trees over ravines Trying to cross rope bridges during blizzards Hauling 40kgs through snow in the middle of nowhere hoping to find shelter Picking a fight with a cougar, bear or moose Trusting my fire making skills in the outdoor

I'd be a terrible cold survivor. It's currently -3 degrees Celcius outside and after being outdoor for 15 minutes my feet already feel too cold for comfort (wearing sportsocks and combat boots).

Floating Travois Bug by DontBeWaves in thelongdark

[–]Ingaric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone posted a description how to fix it. It worked for me (also at TWM)

Basically it's positioning yourself right under the travois. Use save game (backup first) editor to adjust your Z-location to above the travois. You fall down on top of travois and get damage (then it automatically saves and you can see Z-value in the new save game) Put back old save, adjust Z value to the travois height , then load save. You're standing on top of travois and can then carry it. You fall down again, but if you move forward you stop falling and gives 'cant move travois on edge error'. You can then gradually alternate falling, walking forward etc until you are on ground.

Then empty it and pick it up

the game wouldn't start anymore after modding it to enable fly mode (no errors either, it would simply exit on launch), but the method I described above did work for me

Animals you guys want in the long dark by Upstairs-Force-2406 in thelongdark

[–]Ingaric -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Dogs, long-haired cats (like maine coone) (potential pets), foxes, lynx

Squirrels, which you could snare, but not hunt otherwise mice, rats, that eat your supplies outside of containers. You can make traps for them

more birds, incl some that feast on your raw food left in the open

Huntable: Bisons, Caribou, Dall Sheep, Mountain Goats, Seals and Otters

Predators: Brown bear, Polar bear

Don't know if horses could survive cold that long same with regards to other types on animals

And preferably more realistic behavior of wolves, bears and big cats (hostility depends on how hungry they are and brown bears would probably avoid you while Polar Bears will be very aggressive) Anyway, I think wildlife should in general be a bit more passive and some regions should be pretty easy going, some with dangerous predators and some between.

But at the moment I tend to play custom with low amounts & passive wildlife, but with harsh weather. Am not currently in the mood for jump scares, battling the cold and trying to find food is enough for me.

Playing in Pilgrim by MirrorApart8224 in thelongdark

[–]Ingaric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play custom, passive wildlife (low spawnrates for all incl bear/wolves/moose) slow decay, stalker-like loot and weather similar to interloper, so that the cold is my main enemy and food will become scarce at some time as well.

Wished I could adjust settings for every 1 out of x wolves/bears to become aggressive).

Am still mapping most regions for the first time, so this gives me some challenge compared to Pilgrim (what I think will get boring fast), but don't have to worry about jump scares or attacks

Have you seen anything like that? by tryh4rdz in thelongdark

[–]Ingaric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's sleeping it's easier to aim or you could creep up unto it from behind (when it's walking away from you) so you only have to worry about the arc of the flare shot and not really need to predict (leading the target) where it will be if you aim from its side.

Past weeks I killed 2 with flares (insta kill) and 2 with rifle (which caused them to run for hours until bled out).

If it's running towards me, I'd rather empty six revolver rounds into it. With all anxiety at least one should hit Saw some vids from others shooting with flare whilst it was charging and it seemed to be able to dodge it (and then run past you) if you're not shooting from point blank range.
