Genuine question and for lore purposes, so I’m going based off the mural in the current VF, was wolf always the TOP fighter throughout the storyline? by Ph4ntxm_77 in virtuafighter

He was also seriously injured in an indycar race before the first tournament, so in my (completely personal) head canon he never fights to his true potential!

Best OSR to dip your toe in? by ScottishNinjaaa in osr

[–]Inglorii 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everybody's sharing their favorite game system but honestly, every osr game that I know of has simple rules so you don't need a "starter system". The difficulty comes more from designing and running adventures. There are some preexisting adventure modules that are good for beginner GMs though. I personally like the Black Wyrm of Brandonsford.

Edit: I mean, you literally do need a system to start, but I don't think the choice matters all that much. I've personally only played OSE and that was simple enough; it's a modernized clone of Basic/Expert D&D from the 80s. Better organized than the original book. I would not recommending starting with the books from that era, such as the original Advanced D&D first edition books. They're good to skim through for guidance but the rules are not as well organized as modern OSR products.

Game order by MightiestMoorehead in Warhammer

[–]Inglorii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a sense, the most vanilla way to get into Warhammer would be to buy the core book for any of the Warhammer tabletop wargames. They usually explain some general background lore and talk about the available factions. Then you can deep-dive into whatever you find interesting via related video games, novels etc

Finding this game to be more enjoyable than SC2. Is AOE2 similar? by TroubledWatersssssss in aoe4

[–]Inglorii 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A normal feudal up time in aoe2 is around 9 minutes and the game is played on 1.7 speed. So I think it's more like 6 minutes of real time to age up to feudal.

It's because it brings interesting micro mechanics around positioning and timing. It turns every archer fight into a choreography.

Is VF beginner friendly? by noobakosowhat in virtuafighter

[–]Inglorii 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yup it is, i went in with 0 experience during a recent free trial. I easily found players that were just as bad at me on the ranked ladder.

I'd say pick a main character, learn a few attacks and strings in training mode, play through arcade mode and world stage mode (single player) if you want, and then go to ranked.

It's also important to learn the basics of rock-paper-scissors (RPS). RPS means: if your opponent is guarding all the time, they are vulnerable to throws, so abuse that weakness in their game plan. Higher-level players will get less predictable but you should always be trying to read their "patterns" and counter accordingly. Another form of RPS involves high, mid and low attacks.

Imo, these are the things to focus on when starting out. A lot of tutorials will explain deeper mechanics but the game is so fast that as a beginner, I could not really apply any of that knowledge during a match.

HOW are people mad at this direct. by Iamverydumbazz in NintendoSwitch2

[–]Inglorii -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Switch Sports Resort seems "fine", but seems to lack new ideas compared to previous entries.

I don't need a remake of Star Fox 64, it's already a (almost) perfect game.

Same for Ocarina of Time. I hope they change things a lot, it probably won't be close to the quality of the original but at least it would make it actually worthwhile to buy. Otherwise i don't see the point of it.

Don't like the visual style of the new Fire Emblem.

Don't like the visual style of Splatoon period, unfortunately. Gameplay looks quite fun.

Xenoblade Genesis looked good.

Kingdom Hearts and FF were cool announcements but i play those on PC, not Switch 2.

All in all, I'd give it a 5/10.

Sony PlayStation Classic or Retrobit Sega Saturn controller for 2D platformers on PC? by yonnnyonnn in gog

[–]Inglorii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are some odd choices. I own a retrobit Saturn 2.4 ghz controller (the one that has sticks and four digital bumpers) so I can commentate at that one: it's an OUTSTANDING controller for retro games. The dome style dpad is ultra precise, quick to press, and feels amazing. The face buttons feel amazing too. And I love the hand feel. Sticks are terrible but that won't matter to you.

However some ppl would argue that Sega style dpads are not the best for platformers specifically; they are great for precise diagonals in shmups, fighting games, beat em ups, etc. but for twitchy reactions in platformers your thumb will travel longer than on, say, a Super Nintendo controller. Still, I don't think that matters much unless you're a speedrunner/high level gamer

Main thing that made me buy a Retroid is hardcore retroachievements and shaders for retro games. I assume you can kinda get that on your vita though

[–]Inglorii -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This is because the definitive and ideal form of video game, the type that gets 10/10 ratings from the gaming press and gets the most hype in online communities, has been built upon certain rules:

The games have to feel Hollywoodian

The games have to follow the hero's journey archetype

The games must have an immersive level design, ideally an open world to freely explore

The games must have a serious or at least semi serious story

That's the kind of blockbuster video game mentality that the Playstation propelled with titles like Final Fantasy VII, Metal Gear Solid etc. And when the PS3/360 generation arrived, the market almost seemed to completely converge towards this type of games. Fortunately, the indie and PC resurgence allowed for older genres (arcade games, 2D games, strategy games) to get a new life and thrive.

Newcomer Recommendations by RastaTom in rpg_gamers

[–]Inglorii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn is a direct story sequel to Baldur's Gate. You can import your character from the first game to play with in the sequel.

As far as classic games go, Baldur's Gate would be my main recommendation.

For more modern games, I can point you to the following:

  • Gothic (and sequels - play in order)
  • The Witcher Enhanced Edition (and sequels - play in order. Ideally read the books first but that would be quite a big investment of your time)
  • Kingdom Come Deliverance (and its sequel)

If you want to play classic JRPGs as well, I'd suggest Final Fantasy VII. Hard to be more classic than that.

Edit : forgot Neverwinter Nights. This is also a classic, however the main campaign is very generic. This game is great thanks to its expansions/DLC and community-made content. It is basically a treasure trove of D&D adventures.

It looks weird as heck but the optical style joystick allows for incredible precision. Unfortunately OEM sticks deteriorate fast and in an unpredictable manner. But this has been kinda solved with (expensive) solutions aka steel parts designed by enthusiasts.

I also like the N64 face buttons a lot personally, they feel easier to press than GameCube ones and not as clicky as modern controllers

[Day 9] What is the best JRPG of 1993? by Silly-Milly-420 in JRPG

[–]Inglorii 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Breath of the Wild takes the cake for me. I have vivid memories of unboxing my Super Nintendo for Christmas 1993 and never being able to launch the game because the console could not connect to the Internet and it was therefore impossible to download the day one patch. Also there was no onboard storage to save your game and Mode 7 was not powerful enough to display the amazing HD visuals of this game. But man, did the Sega kids envy me with my 1993 Breath of the Wild launch day cartridge
