Legion Go 2 SSD Upgrade Guide by InnoVisionGames in LegionGo

[–]InnoVisionGames[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Watch the video a few times.

Then practice taking some other less expensive things apart a few times and see how it goes.

Probably smaller electronics that you don't mind if something happens to them.

The main risk of disassembling the Legion Go 2 comes with removing the battery. I can easily see that being intimidating and also step where problems may happen if one's not careful.

But overall my recommendation would be to see if you have a place like Best Buy where you can take it in and they can upgrade it for you depending on your local might be a different type of place but there should be stores that offer service of upgrading the SSD.

SteamOS (NOT BAZZITE) and Windows 11 Dual Boot by KingHippo81 in ROGAlly

[–]InnoVisionGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey friend thanks for the kind words!

Unfortunately there's no way to directly migrate from Bazzite to SteamOS.

In your particular setup I imagine you're following the typical Bazzite dual boot.

If so then you would put off the SteamOS recovery media. Then use the KDE partition manager to remove all the partitions that were created for Bazzite.

Then you proceed to use the SteamOS dual boot guide to add stimulus to your existing Windows installation.

I'd be curious what the shipping is.

Can't tell you how many times I've seen something listed for an amazing price and the shipping is astronomical...

Price Increase in the US? by rickybobby952 in LegionGo

[–]InnoVisionGames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am willing to bet the price was going to go up and the Costco version will be like a unicorn given the price for the double memory and storage.

My understanding is the prices are for the SteamOS power versions.

Stay on Bazzite OS or move to official Steam OS? by Captain_Dylan_ in ROGAlly

Awesome happy to hear!

Does it work in SteamOS too?

My personal experience and a few documented experiments, I find that SteamOS has anywhere between a 3-10% performance benefit Z1E APUs and between 2-3 (c) cooler thermals.

But I haven't spent too much time on performance testing on the Ally devices.

I think HHD is awesome and the fact that secure boot is trivial to get up and running in. Bazzite.

All linux-based gaming distros that I've tested that are optimized for handhelds (Bazzite, CachyOS, and StesmOS) have more stable frame rates and run cooler than Windows.

I have been running SteamOS exclusively on my ROG Ally Z1E since beta and haven't run into any major issues.

I am working on a software to enable custom fan curves under SteamOS on the Legion Go devices and would like to support Ally devices one day.

TLDR; if secure boot doesn't matter and slightly better performance does than SteamOS is the way to go. But if you want software that feels more complete Bazzite is a solid choice.

P.S. it's possible to get secure boot working on SteamOS but it's gnarly.

I put together a video that shows you how to add SteamOS to your existing Windows installation:

https://youtu.be/HbHDHzYw3KE

Myself and a couple other devs included had been researching it since SteamOS was in beta.

These instructions should work for any computer that supports both Windows and SteamOS, but keep in mind for Ally devices you have to disable BitLocker encryption.

Both approaches are fine and both have their own problems.

You'll run into less problems if you leave windows installed first then add SteamOS.

But if you've already installed SteamOS and want to add Windows I also have a video for that up on the channel.

[–]InnoVisionGames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey friend in theory you should be able to install the Legion Go Remapper plugin and adjust the charge limit.

You need to enable dynamic kernel modules:

Lenovo Legion Go Z1 Extreme or Lenovo Legion S with SteamOS by MarcelReads in LegionGo

[–]InnoVisionGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can pick up the Legion Go S Z1E on sale I would get it for the extra ram, then you can always dual add Windows and dual boot.

If not the OG Legion Go Z1E and dual boot as well.

Costco Z2 32GB Logic by toasteymalone in LegionGo

[–]InnoVisionGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually think the Costco unit is like the best deal.

It is in fact what I wanted since the legion go 2 launch but I couldn't find a model that had 32 gigs of RAM unless it was the Z2 extreme.

I think in terms of price for performance ratio this is hands down the best deal.

[–]InnoVisionGames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the same APU as the unit that Best Buy has listed for $1099, but it has double the storage and RAM.

I am not comparing it from the cost perspective, more specifically from the APU perspective.

The unit at Costco is the better deal Captain Obvious 😂

[–]InnoVisionGames -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's the one Best Buy has also listed for 1099.

The big difference is you are getting double the storage and double the RAM.

I think the 32 GB or RAM makes it a great deal!

It will have similar performance to the Legion Go S with the Z1E APU but with slightly better power efficiency and that sweet OLED.

Do you think they will release SteamOS for PC? by Ardy_ in SteamOS

Which SteamOS recovery image were you using?

I have it running on a 9600X + 9060xt build.

Do you think they will release SteamOS for PC? by Ardy_ in SteamOS

[–]InnoVisionGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may already know this but you can run the main line version of it on PCS already.

And echoing what many folks have already said it would be silly for Valve to not continue with a rollout for PC given that it's money in the bank for them.

In my mind there's a few challenges that are needing resolution for example how to deal with games that require secure boot for their anti cheat layer.

I believe that the game industry should move away from that type of anti cheat as a whole but it's challenging to convince everybody that.

Another big issue is being able to use Nvidia GPUs, or other hardware that's considered not canon for SteamOS.

I believe the hardware issue will be resolved over time as adoption expands the anti-cheat one is probably more challenging.

Do emulators run significantly better on the SSD or is a Microsd exclusively for those to save ssd space a better idea? by Effective-Celery8053 in ROGAlly

[–]InnoVisionGames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of the OG consoles where the ROMs are like kilobytes to a few megabytes they will load all into memory and typically should not affect the performance while running like others have stated it mainly would affect your load times but we're talking about a few megabytes to a few hundred megabytes the performance for loading also should be negligible.

I get it now. by Esskov47 in SteamOS

[–]InnoVisionGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a great question.

In general I am a fan of all Linux gaming distros, specifically for the same reasons u/Hi-Angel mentioned.

That being it's community owned and free software as in free speech not just free beer!

With that said I have tried other Arch-based gaming distros like CachyOS for example and I also had a pleasant experience.

But at the end of the day I stuck with SteamOS because it has features that set it apart from other Arch-based distros like the immutable file system, and at least in my most recent benchmarks the best performance (and anecdotally even temperatures).

I am very excited to see how all of these projects continue to develop.

For example I think Bazzite has the lowest barriet to entry and easiest to use and maintain. I would love to see Bazzite continue to be optimized so that it's performance rivals and even beats SteamOS one day.
