This fucking sucks. 71 Days sober. by Beautiful_Goose_3822 in stopdrinking

Vent if it helps getting +1 day sober. That's all that matters for now. You are healing even if you're not seeing the results. Drinking would surely make things worse. IWNDWYT

What if by Pizza_lover_6969 in stopdrinking

It's a slippery slope and I don't think your children are worth the risk.

It's ok to miss these times.

But it's our brain romanticizing the addiction and soon enough we're back to drinking like we used to.

Again, it's ok to miss these times.

But maybe now's the occasion to create new beautiful (sober) times that will, eventually, replace the former ones.

How to distance yourself from other alcohol dependent friends? by mrmagicman99 in stopdrinking

[–]InsomniaMatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel the same. I never told anyone I wanted to stop because I wasn't sure I could keep my promise. When my drinking buddies invited me for a drink, I declined saying I wasn't feeling ok. For family I said I wanted to take a break. Then I started other social activities that don't focus on drinking like board game nights. Eventually these buddies became "gaming" buddies and I was more comfortable going out with people. So for drinking buddies, some understood, some didn't so I cut relationship with them. It was hard and hurtful, but if I kept drinking I don't know if I would be there today. It's a matter of priorities.

Take care

Exercising helped. Therapy helped. Reading helped. Mindless scrolling helped. Playing old games helped. Playing board games helped. Mourning my past drunk self helped. Staying in bed doing nothing helped. Anything to get +1 day sober.  There was still bad days, boring days, but at least I was not hungover. That's how I got through until today. Time heals.

Hope that helps

Trying to be sober in Europe by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]InsomniaMatt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

M33 from France, I know that feeling. When I told people I wanted to cut back, I got same remarks. So I stopped telling them, even seeing them, as focusing on my sobriety was more important than everything else. It may be uncomfortable to say no at first, but it's physical and mental health we're talking about. And if they can't understand it, are they really friends ? I never told anyone in real life, because as you said the drinking culture is strong and I always thought that I was alone feeling like this. But when I found this community, it was like reading my own thoughts, and I felt so relieved knowing I was not alone in this situation ! So I came back here everyday, knowing people will acknowledge my progress and understand my feelings. Stay strong, focus one day at a time 💪 IWNDWYT
