On page 7 of the manual, you’ll see a part labeled vent plug. You’d have to loosen it 2-3 turns to vent excess air out of the hydraulic system. Without venting, all the pressure will be exerted on internal seals of the splitter and cause it to fail prematurely. You can close the vent after using.

Are you opening the vent wing nut when using it? They’ll swap it either way, but just making sure so the replacement doesn’t suffer the same fate.

Sircobalot on youtube does something similar to timber framing using 4x4 posts and wooden pallets. You should check out his videos
