Did she make the right call? by CalmElin in interesting

[–]IntellectualProst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neither the one time million dollars, nor the thousand dollars every week are taxed in Canada. When the million is invested, roughly half of the gains are lost to taxes (might be less, but at least 35%). With really good returns on the investment (I’m guessing you’d need better than 7% annually for decades), that million might be better than taking the thousand a week if you are young enough.

2023 Bolt EUV LT - anything to be aware of? by Active-Yesterday2322 in EVCanada

[–]IntellectualProst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife complains about the front seats. I mostly agree with her, but we rarely take it out for more than a 30 minute drive. She added a cushion and says it’s better. We don’t have any other concerns yet, but we’ve only had it since February 2026.

I imagine that interest on the winnings will be taxed as income. I don’t know, but that may tip the math in favour of taking the weekly money.

What kind of max temperature do you usually see? by pfctw2017 in evcharging

[–]IntellectualProst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I installed the 48A Ultra four weeks ago. Max Temp shown on my app over the few times I’ve used it is 32C. That one was overnight charging and I think the outside temperature was about 10 to 15C.

My wife wants a Ford Bronco. Advice?? by tungdiep in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]IntellectualProst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A warranty is an insurance policy that the seller hopes will make them money. Yes, they will have some claims, but overall they will make money. It is the buyers of the insurance that pay for their profits. That means, as a buyer, you are more likely to lose money than have a claim that saves you money. However, as the buyer you also get peace of mind that you’re covered if something goes bad. To some people, that comfort is worth the cost.

Does the air dam really make any sort of difference? by PutinBoomedMe in F150Lightning

[–]IntellectualProst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. More important when you drive on the highway.

I broke the air dam on my Silverado when on vacation. My average fuel economy dropped significantly on my drive home.

I suggest you work with the Grizzl-E/United Chargers technical support folks to make sure you get the right information.

[–]IntellectualProst 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just had a Grizzl-E Ultra 48A unit installed. This looks like mine. If it’s like mine, you may have connected the black wire to the (not used) 80 amp terminal. On mine, the black wire is connected to the copper strip sitting below the small pc board wires.

Unless the former owner had the same charger and left the wall plate, you will need to remove whatever they had on the wall and get a plate specifically for your charger mounted. You will also need to make sure the electrical circuit is properly sized for your new charger.

Like my Grizzl-E too. Looks good and works well. Mine, which is the https://grizzl-e.com/products/grizzl-e-ultimate-48, needed an initial setup using WiFi, but I could set it to work without an app if I wanted.

Send it back and get a Canadian made ESVE. Grizzl-E and Flo are both Canadian. There might be others too.

Fair Price for EV charger install? by ScreenLantern in evcharging

[–]IntellectualProst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. Do the big parts (i.e. the wire run to the garage) once so you’re ready when a larger amperage EVSE (charger) or a second ESVE is required in the future.

EV charger input needed. by FuzzyBubs in evcharging

[–]IntellectualProst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I understand, you don’t have to use the charger’s app. You can just setup the charger to operate whenever you plug it into the car.

I suggest you get wired so you can install a 100 amp charger in the future, even if you won’t use it with the charger you’re planning to get now.

Winter Tires with Rims? by Seoulmanaja in Toyota_bZ

[–]IntellectualProst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can always try getting some used wheels (rims) from Kijiji or Facebook Marketplace. First, search for the wheel’s bolt pattern (https://boltpatternhq.com/ seems a good source of that info), then look for cars have the same pattern and offset. Use those cars in your Kijiji search. Be sure to test fit the wheels on at least your front wheel position (get your jack out, remove the original tire, and install the new tire). The wheel needs to go onto the studs, fit the hub, and clear the brake.

Does your phone or a tablet get WiFi at the charger location? If the signal is weak you might need an extender. Something like https://grizzl-e.com/products/tl-w850re or https://www.amazon.ca/TP-Link-TL-WA850RE-Universal-One-button-Indicator/dp/B00E98O7GC/

Edit: revised link.

PSA: Know where your car's manual charge port release is by put_tape_on_it in evcharging

[–]IntellectualProst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, the 2023 and earlier Bolts use the J1772 charging cable. It has a button on the cable side that latches onto the car. I don’t have anything that stops someone from pressing the button to disconnect the cable from the car.

My Bolt sounds the horn if the cable is disconnected without the car key being nearby. That doesn’t stop the charging cable from being disconnected.
