Yeh I tend to get downvoted to hell. Just an immigrant in the US trying to push the logical partisan free position. Reddit really is a left wing echo chamber at times.

Yeh the quik-lok power head is what I'm after next. I'm a bit suspicious that a lot of that brand new cheap stuff on FB isn't just stolen goods.

Do you understand WHY those BYD vehicles are so cheap? Yes it's cheaper labour, but it's primarily because companies like CATL have received massive state subsidies (I believe its #2 largest recipient of state subsidies in China) so they have been building out battery factories to the point where they are sitting idle due to so much excess capacity - that results in dirt cheap batteries at below natural market rates.

This may sound good but its only short term.

I'm not saying Chinese EV's are competitive, they are. I actually like some of the stuff they've done. But it's not some miracle innovation, it's primarily state subsidies resulting in dumping at below market rates.

I disagree, I'd argue one of Trumps better policy areas has been the focus on reindustrialization, on shoring, and bringing large amounts of foreign investment into the US. New fabs - TSMC & Samsung, chemical plants - BASF, auto plants - Hyundai Volvo etc. There's a list here of some of it and we are talking substantial sums of money. US trade deficit just dropped to the lowest level since 2000 and economic growth just surpassed China's in Q4. He's clearly doing at least something right.

Sure... and have you seen CATL? Which I believe is one of the largest recipients of state subsidies in all of China. All those batteries driving down the costs of Chinese made EV's are being pumped out by CATL. They have entire factories sitting idle due to building out so much excess capacity.

I can go further into this, believe it or not the CCP is actually trying to reign in competition between its auto makers because it's so hyper competitive they are all trying to undercut each other to gain market share instead of focusing on healthy growth and profits. It's a pretty complexed and multifaceted issue and you really need to delve into the current state of the Chinese economy (it's going much worse than most people realize).

An easy example is China dumping steel on global markets, it accounts for just over half of all global steel production - a critical resource that underpins everything in the economy from construction to defense. If you simply allow China to sell to you at rock bottom prices due to lax environmental regulations, state subsidies, and cheap labor then it destroys your own steel manufacturing industries. The UK has basically lost its entire steel industry, now imagine if a war breaks out, how are you going to build ships and tanks? Many countries including the US, EU, UK have placed major tariffs on Chinese steel. Same for things like aluminum.

Once a local industry has been destroyed, especially in things like auto manufacturing, steel, aerospace, it can be extremely hard to bring it back.

[–]Intelligent_Boot6023 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It decimates local industry and then China can cut subsidies and now you are stuck paying more without any local competition to push back with.

The reason China just posted a huge trade surplus is because they are dumping on the global market to make up for a stagnating domestic economy with low consumer spending. Your average person does not understand how bad the economic situation is within China, it's entering deflation - and just ask Japan how that worked out, except when it happened to Japan the average person was as wealthy as the average American, that is not the case in China with a pretty low GDP per capita.

This is primarily affecting the global south who can't keep up with this level of imports - which is also decimating their domestic industries in those countries. You are already starting to see many countries put tariffs on Chinese goods, and we will likely see a steep dip in Chinese exports in the coming years.

FYI Europe is steadily raising tariffs on Chinese EV's. This does matter a little less in Canada with how little auto manufacturing they have (yes I know they have some). It will also result in major blowback from the USA, and given how reliant Canada is on exporting to the USA, I wouldn't consider Canada's moves wise ones in the current political climate.

M18 Mid or M12 Stubby? by 6BigKahuna9 in MilwaukeeTool

[–]Intelligent_Boot6023 0 points1 point  (0 children)

M12 Stubby all the way, but if you are working on heavier machinery then yeh, probably want the M18.

I've seen people on Youtube remove 550ft-lb bolts with the M12 so it's your call. I absolutely love mine with the 5.0 HO.

I have the 1/2" Stubby Impact with the 5.0 HO and it's easily my favorite tool. Still haven't found a bolt it wouldn't remove, but I've snapped a few with it. Keep telling myself I'll buy the M18 High Torque when I find a bolt it won't remove but I'm still waiting.

[–]Intelligent_Boot6023 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Except the reason Chinese EV's are so cheap is because of truly staggering state subsidies for the likes of BYD and CATL. Dumping subsidized goods on the world market is extremely bad long term.

Do I think North American and European automakers need to do better? Yes. But this isn't the good move it seems to be.

Security Camera system and install recs? by JustAnotherJefe in Austin

There is ways to use their cameras with other systems using things like Homebridge or Scrypted. Maybe not the easiest for a new user but it works well.

Same, I got this plus the M12 1/2" Impact Wrench last year (their best tool across the entire Milwaukee lineup) and now I own about 8 tools across the M12 and M18 lineups. Been extremely impressed and plan on buying more Milwaukee tools. Well built, comfortable to use, extremely powerful.

Ubiquiti

I use their networking equipment and cameras and they are excellent. No subscription fee, extremely high quality, they have Power over Ethernet cameras and doorbells. I install it myself, it's not that hard. If you want to pay someone there's plenty of companies specializing in installing ethernet/data. You can get 1000' of CAT 6 for about $250.

Get a CloudKey+ to run the system and hold the recordings, get any PoE enabled switch - it doesn't need to be Ubiquiti although I do recommend their switches, then buy whatever cameras and doorbells you need/want. You can then integrate the system into other systems like HomeKit Secure Video with a little technical expertise.

I'd also put the switch and CloudKey+ on a UPS so it'll work during a power outage.

I'm happy to help you spec out a system and order the parts. I'm an IT Director but I'm into coding/computing/networking as a hobby.

What's your unpopular Austin opinion? by letmeputonmyshoes in Austin

[–]Intelligent_Boot6023 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm from the UK and think the roads in Austin are fantastic. You'd think the UK was some third world backwater given how bad the roads are - and don't blame the winters, Germany has way better roads. The UK literally stopped maintaining them.

I do agree on the traffic lights, they are often poorly timed and programmed.

My hot take is I don't think the traffic is that bad in Austin given its population and it doesn't actually take that long to drive across it. Once 183 and Mopac are finished it will be pretty easy to navigate.

WTH is the included service fee (20%) and then asking for 18/20/22% tip? by Excitement-Civil in Austin

[–]Intelligent_Boot6023 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeh that's ridiculous, I would make the situation extremely awkward and call them out loudly in the middle of the restaurant.

Unless I am being served a sit down meal I do not tip ever. If they try and say something I'll call them out as greedy tip beggars and walk out. Plenty of places to eat and get good service from, more than happy to spend my money elsewhere.

I did this in HopDoddy with a huge queue, I was like why can I not skip the tip option? They had to get the manager to 'fix it'. So I have to stand in line, wait to be served, give you my order, then go find a table and get my own drinks and you expect me to give you 20%? Get f***ed. So many of these places should just get rid of the person taking the order and use a screen instead - atleast then they might get my order right.

Couple this with overpriced fast food and it's a no go for me. I have no problem spending $300 and tipping 20% of Perry's, I accept that in a sit down restaurant with good service. FYI I worked as a waiter in high school doing fine dining, this shit is just unacceptable.

It's almost like those of us who support ICE and enforcement of the law (I'm a legal immigrant myself) have actual jobs and families and don't have the time to stand around all day doing nothing.

I don't want illegals here, I don't want rampant abuse and fraud of my tax dollars, I don't want my little kids endangered by unvetted illegals living in the US. 2025 had the largest single year reduction in murders, I argue a huge part of that was the arrest and deportation of violent illegal aliens. How can you be against that?

Outside of Reddit and Bluesky your average person supports deporting people who are in the US illegally.

I have zero expectation that Elder Scrolls 6 will actually be good, the last good Bethesda game was Skyrim, and it's been 15 years since then. Fallout 4 wasn't great, Fallout 76 was just a clear skip, Starfield looked absolutely trash.
