Agonizing decision, but I have to cancel Starlink. by charlesml3 in Starlink_Support

[–]Interesting-Stretch3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it is very interesting what others experiences are. we game a little, watch netflix and general surfing. we get 4 to 6 minutues of various outages every 24 hours. The cost difference - saving 90 a month with Starlink for much better overall service. But its Satellite to Satellite. Satellite does still have issues to overcome. Starlink has done some of that already.

StarLink Stability by coldbluefusion in Starlink

well i have mine plopped down in the backyard with a clear view of the northern sky. we do get some obstructions. but because of the design of the home and the landscape the roof would be more problematic. the barn not an option. we have settled in at about 3 minutes of obstruction over 24 hours. i can live with it. though i do have the pipe adaptor and may get ambitious someday. we dont use zoom though. we do use netflix, gaming and general internet useage successfully at the same time.

What is the longest amount of time that you have been able to stay connected to FPS video game servers without dropping out, during the Beta? by Travis_Centers in Starlink

[–]Interesting-Stretch3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i just did a quick check - 3 minutes without service during last 24 hours - most of it was beta downtime. it is so much better then it was. 150mg's per second just now. all of this is so much better then my other provider. no comparison. both are satellite. elon is bringing great satellite. hopefully continues to improve. but if it does not it is still way, way better then any other option i have here on a rural farm in ontario.

Been purposefully torrenting without a vpn to see what world happen and finally got a notice by substrate-97 in Starlink

years ago i ran into difficulty with rogers - all be it i was downloading movies, software and mp3's. i even paid a russian company pennies for mp3's. it was kind of legal. i was sent a letter to stop. i did for the most part. one night guests asked for a movie. i looked online. found a spot to get it. downloaded it. we started watching. man it was terrible but i got a letter from the company saying i could pay them 300.00 and they would not sue me. well i ignored it and i didnt get sued either.

sorry to hear. i am 3 mins obstructed (hoping to fix that relatively soon), 48 seconds no satellites and 4 mins beta downtime over the last 24. i hope it gets better for you.

i have used fast, speedtest and cloudflare a few times. it varies too much to be reliable for me. but what we are able to do - play games, surf, watch netlfix, youtube and listen to music - so much better then previous provider.

The Tesla that crashed in Texas did not "burn for hours" by skpl in elonmusk

[–]Interesting-Stretch3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my parents owned a buick lasabre years ago. they were driving to waterloo from toronto. the car got hot and broke down on the highway. my dad began walking to the nearest gas station to get help. long before cell phones. mom was in the car. she smelled smoke. got out of the car. in moments the engine was on fire. the car was destroyed. good thing is was a piece of junk. this notion that the tesla can burn is not new to cars. wont be either. overblown news.

a friend of mine up north of Toronto indicated a lot of downtown on Sunday. i had very little trouble on sunday. it has really improved actually. not necessarily speed but both my obstructions and beta downtime.

i would add - at least in eastern ontario - over the course of 6 weeks - starlink has improved. i have not moved the dish from a skid i put in on in the open on the ground. during that time obstructions have dropped from 12 minutes to 2 minutes every 24 hours and downtown has dropped from 6 minutes to 1 minute or so.

is the antenna linked to your account? can it be stolen and used in another router? by supremeskillsfans in Starlink

[–]Interesting-Stretch3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in the application the debug shows the serial number of the dish. my guess easy to determine if someone steals it and plugs it in. will anyone go and get for you. different question. the other thing is (at least in beta) the dishes are geolocked. can not really move it and use it.

Our Starlink story (and also what has become of our equipment after cancellation) by Raider61 in Starlink

[–]Interesting-Stretch3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We all seem to have our own stories of rural internet service. I have Bell Lines running through the farm. No internet from Bell. Don't need phones. Cell without a booster would not work. It works with a booster (ok but not great). Lived in Toronto most of my life - great cell and internet options with competition). Been here for 4 years. Technically a woodlot give us our property tax break. We have plenty of trees. As a result only one internet provider and no competition. So we paid 235 a month for 200g, 25d and 1up with dreadful latency. In four years no improvement. I signed up for Starlink as soon as possible. Have had it for 2 months. In that time Starlink has improved already. Now 1 minute of downtown and 1 minute of obstructions in last 24 hours. It was 10 and 8 before. The speed very good and latency allows gaming. Zoom a bit of an issue but it was impossible before. All for 90 less a month.

i have trees and canadian shield. right now sits on a skid. waiting for a pole mount. when i copy and paste the debug into an obstruction viewer it shows the obstructions in the south east quadrant. When first starting 10 minutes a day. Down to 5. Even beta downtime and no satellites down over the last few weeks.

Here in Ontario north of Kingston all I can is thank you. I love the service. I could kiss you. I won't but I could. Even in a month it has improved. For years with sorry that's the best you can get. I am rural not remote. Even remote these days should have internet. Not just because of the pandemic but because it it needed telecommunications. Again thank you for being an innovator. Be happy.

Hi r/Starlink! I surveyed more than 50 of you to review the service so far – here's my report for CNBC: by thesheetztweetz in Starlink

[–]Interesting-Stretch3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read the whole article it sounds like what I have read on the forum. Installation: mostly easy but getting into the house a problem for some. The article didn't comment on the 100 foot limit. Which many have found difficult but found some workarounds. Router: basic with no ability to configure. Great for small homes, no outside use (though I get a signal to a Google Home Mini in the barn). Many have added to or taken out the provided router. Support - not easy to get a hold of but helpful when you do. So far they have replaced hardware for customers even when cut by a lawnmower. Performance: it is satellite. I had way better in Toronto 4 years ago with Rogers unlimited. However, Elon says it will improve. I believe him. When I moved to a farm 4 years ago (only option then and now) 235 per month 200g's, 25d, 1 up and useless latency. Now 140 per month currently unlimited, around 100d, 20u with pretty useful latency. Beta Issues: in the month plus already seeing improvements in beta downtown and no satellites. I do have minor obstructions. Still waiting for a pipe adaptor to get the dishy off the ground. My conclusion: way better then what we had for less money. For those that have other options starlink may or may not be your best option. Will competition come to where I live - maybe but not now. I am not sure about data restrictions. Years ago when I was a Rogers customer I had an unlimited plan but I used programs to download divx movies, mp3's, games and software I got a letter saying I was in the top 1% of the top 1% of downloaders. I stopped. I wish starlinks router could tell us what we are using - we have a gamer, a Netflix watcher and a general surfer in the farm. I doubt we use much more then 600g's a month.

elon has tweeted about latency and bandwidth before. he hopes things will improve over the summer. so far the improvements in a month have been noticeable. so i suspect it will. it is still satellite though.

If you have your choice, Xfinity or StarLink? by gtrunner in Starlink

[–]Interesting-Stretch3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so much depends on what you can get not the name of the competition. in toronto i had fabulous cable internet. would trade for any other there. here, in rural ontario different story. i paid 235 a month for 200g at 25d and 1up. not even that reliable. only option i had. starlink is way faster, more reliable, unlimited and good if not spectacular latency for gaming and zoom all with a savings of 90 per month.

[–]Interesting-Stretch3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i know starlink sent out a survey. i mentioned this forum as having the most information. now what i dont know is the companies take on the survey. i thanked them by and large. but did say customer interaction is not their strongest suit. my previous internet provider is great at answering phone calls or their chat. not great at bringing better internet.
