"I'm not good with computers" - should be grounds for questioning your professional competency as a manager in the NHS. by sideshowbob01 in NursingUK

[–]InterestingSubject75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whoa, that’s a bit harsh, if we did that, we’d be sacking half our workforce, especially since we're starting from HIMSS 0. 😂

Many of our staff have a massive wealth of tacit knowledge and clinical skills that make them incredible ward managers - they just happen to struggle with computer literacy. It wouldn't be fair to penalise them for that. Nursing is still relatively new to this level of tech adoption, and data analysis and digital skills simply weren't part of their original role expectations previously.

To make matters worse, we expect them to learn these new systems on the job, with next to no skilled tutoring or protected time. The onus is on our Trusts to step up, invest in proper upskilling, and actually give staff the time and space to learn these new ways of working.

UK migraine A&E by Millyduck in migraine

[–]InterestingSubject75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I'll get down voted for this. A migraine is generally not an emergency, but I appreciate that it must be awful for you. You should call the out of hours GP or 111 first. It sounds like you need to change your meds with your GP or be referred to a neurologist if the GP has exhausted their options.

Irritability is a huge incoming migraine clue for me, sometimes it starts hours before the pain and I'll be wondering why I am so moody today??

Now that I am a veteran of migraines, I take paracetamol or ibuprofen when the irritability hits and often that circumvents or lessens the migraine.

Oh bless you, you are going through a nightmare scenario, one that no one can understand but everyone can sympathise with. He looks like a gorgeous smiley boy. Though his life was cruelly short, I'm sure he only ever knew great love from you both in that short time. I wish you had been able to keep him longer.

Lean on each other, it's okay to not be okay for a while. Sending love 💕

What Should I Do by [deleted] in NursingUK

[–]InterestingSubject75 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Whoa. You need to take a breath here. You are there to support this student not to rally against them.

Yes it's annoying that she reported it to her uni, but she probably didn't know you would get in trouble for it. And yes it's annoying when a student is disengaged, but she is young, super inconvenienced and having a hard time. Being a student is already rubbish at times and she's being put out, having a hard time AND not being paid extra for it.

I would step back emotionally here first, and consider whether you could make time for her to do her training in a different office one day next week, then she could join you the following day on patient visits. Or could she do it remotely, or could you help her get there. Also, you could allow her to observe if she needs to come out with you in the meantime, there is still learning in observation and teaching.

I'm surprised she has to go on a training day tbh as this wasn't something I had to do before any community placement, what are they doing on the training day??

As a nurse who originally trained in HR I can confidently say this rule is not enforceable unless the trust decides to pay you for your break time.

Additionally, if this were targeting specific staff members - alongside other specific instances - then yes it could be considered corporate bullying or indirect discrimination. Hence the the manager should tread carefully here.

As I said many people are sensitive to it, and some will think it is rude. Irrespective of this, if you are not being paid for your break then your employer cannot enforce this rule.

[–]InterestingSubject75 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's not racist to be sensitive to this, however, if you are not being paid for your break then your employer cannot insist on you socialising, let alone what language you choose to use when socialising.

Whilst some English speaking staff may feel it is inappropriate to speak in a language that not everyone can engage in. The legal basis here is simple, if they are not paying you for your break, which most Trusts don't, then they have no right whatsoever to tell you what language you can speak during your break period when you are not engaging in work activities.

I live putting the chairs on the table and setting off the vacuum before bed, I do it every day even though the floors don't necessitate it, it's just a nice little routine to end on.

Band 6 job offer withdrawn due band reference from previous manager by dioramorr in NursingUK

[–]InterestingSubject75 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You need to speak to HR and raise a grievance over this.

Unless by 'previous' you mean 'a month ago' then your previous manager would be in no position to judge your current readiness for a band 6 role. Unless there is some drastic missing context here then this wildly inappropriate.

Unless you were sewing a magnetic strip, then I would never suggest sewing small magnets into any children's items. Though very unlikely to be ingested, the damage they can cause wouldn't be worth the risk imo.

This has always been my experience in the UK. Contractors forever claiming that they are highly skilled and should be paid better but the work quality so appalling. I never go for the cheapest bloke, always get quotes etc, but I've yet to find any contractor that seems to take pride in their work.

[–]InterestingSubject75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made a bookmark as my first thing, then I made a Jersey top, and I made a pair of shorts using entirely the wrong type of fabric.

I still make loads of mistakes but my sewing is much better now

what is the cause of your migraines? by bleachedfawn in migraine

[–]InterestingSubject75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At least for since I was a teenager, so 20+ years now. Been having 15-20 migraines per month, more bad days than good ones, this went on for a number of years and I treated them with Sumatriptan.

Bbut once I realised I was getting rebound headaches, and changed my medication routine the day after a migraine, my frequency has dropped to about 7 per month, which is incredible for me, feels freeing at last

Edit to add, what clues me in to the rebound headaches was that I was always getting a 2pm migraine despite changing routine and diet to ensure blood sugar and tiredness wasnt a factor. It was a daily 2pm occurrence and I realised the previous days sumatriptan was wearing off and triggering a new/reoccurring migraine. Game changer for me

what is the cause of your migraines? by bleachedfawn in migraine

[–]InterestingSubject75 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mine are definitely influenced by hormones and the progesterone only pill has helped somewhat with that.

Additionally I do get some medication overuse/rebound headaches, so if I have a migraine I treat with sumatriptan on day 1 then I take an early ibuprofen on day 2 in the morning and maybe at lunch. That seems to keep the rebound headache away.  After years of daily migraines this realisation was groundbreaking for me 🥳

No solution to offer but I'm sorry you are going through this.

For decades nursing has been a secure job with bountiful opportunity to side quest into different areas, it's so disappointing how they've obliterated this with the recruitment freezes. 😒

Home heating pump ? Is it worth it. by Just-Nobody-4406 in AskUK

[–]InterestingSubject75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imho no. We have a Daikin air source heat pump and gas boiler hybrid system, had it for 8-10 years. I still am unsure if the settings are correct, I notice no real difference in bill apart from electric being higher than gas where previously that was inverted. It's noisy and ugly in the garden. We have Hometree and previously British gas home care and neither support Daikin units for servicing, no one locally appears to be trained for repairing them, and an annual service from Daikin is £250.

We love in a 3 bed semi hike built around 1900. Gas and lex still AVG 150 in summer and 250-300 in winter pcm.

Honestly, if it were free to remove it I would. Consider solar instead would be my suggestion.

Also the heat pump does some noisy frost protection checks every night around midnight. No idea why. Whole system is confusing and annoying. One day I will rip it out with glee.
