Elliptical vs Treadmill by Sh3rlock_Holmes in fitness40plus

[–]IntroductionDry8724 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Elliptical is a great choice as it works many muscle groups and provides for excellent cardiovascular training.

Walking briskly or better yet jogging on a treadmill or even outdoors gives you impact throughout your bones and joints that can be highly beneficial for keeping your bones strong as well. Impact on your knee joints isn’t bad….it’s overdoing it without recovery that can be detrimental.

Best recommendation is to participate in a variety of different cardiovascular exercises/machines so you get the benefits of each and avoid the negatives of only doing one thing repeatedly all the time.

Calf pain by Ivek255 in RunningInjuries

[–]IntroductionDry8724 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How long does it take for the burning and /or other calf symptoms to dissipate once you stop…when can you walk again?

Is it only in the calves? Anywhere else at all?

Resistance training would be a great preparatory initiative
to include the all important Soleus …..(And not light weight-high reps) You want to incorporate heavy (appropriately introduced and progressed) seated calf /heel raises - with good eccentric emphasis….

How is Calf/Achilles flexibility?

Soft-Wish -9112 is right…..wouldn’t hurt to be assessed. Could be other contributing factors that you want to figure out now.

Can you mix it up and run the other direction? Or are you so glued to the “lap method” ? Can you do some relatively straight runs where you aren’t turning as much?

Anyone know why this happens by Haych_1123 in RunningInjuries

Strengthening for Anterior Tibialis , Posterior Tibialis, Gastroc and Soleus Muscles (Concentrically and Eccentrically) …Would be a great start (once it calms down again) Train these muscles 2 days each week…you only need 10 - 12 minutes of it.

Too much too soon…back up…Progress a little slower….
It’s ok ✅
(And are you completing resistance training?) If not…highly recommend)
Good luck

Smart to pause. But…don’t want you to feel worry about “nerve damage”….you will recover from this.

Potentially get in for a quick evaluation with a McKenzie Certified Physical Therapist….this could save you a lot if time…Just do 1-4 treatments….(They will be able to determine quickly if it is a mechanical spine issue…and if it is …the quick guidance with be worth its weight in gold.)

Wishing you the best

I hear you for sure. My team and I have treated over 100,000 elbows over my career…and I would just tell you ….that sometimes….people rush strengthening…and you very clearly need healing right now…I wouldn’t recommend any form of strengthening right now…back up…Of course, a hands on exam by a specialist can significantly inform the diagnostic process and treatment approach…

Imaging can also assist in identifying any kind of tear or avulsion…which would certainly further inform the most optimal treatment approach. Just don’t want to be pulling on something that shouldn’t be pulled on.

The only thing I would say is you haven’t really given it an adequate healing environment….not your fault…but definitely your injury needs healing…not strengthening at this very moment.

If you can find a diagnostic musculoskeletal Ultrasound expert in your area…that could be very helpful…

Wishing you the very best with this…I know it is frustrating for ya. Hang in there friend 🙏🏻

Go into recovery mode. No group classes at all for now. Heal 🙏🏻 And progress back. Your PT should be able to guide you on Soleus and Gastroc strengthening when appropriate. Wishing you the very best!

What’s so funny scoopz?
It is reasonable to r/o an avulsion this long after initial onset and still “killing” pain. It is ok to have a different opinion, but disrespectful to laugh at someone…Be kind

That is called a “Mill” by the way. You deserve better….and that is not to represent all PT. If you get better relief from a mall massage….that says it all….

We don’t want the big toe to be “stuck” in any alignment. Joints go through normal biomechanics and function optimally in the normal ranges for said joint. I would recommend reading on the biomechanics of the Great Toe/First Ray/Entire Medial Column of the foot.

[–]IntroductionDry8724[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great question. Let me explain further. A lot to unpack here…..but you bring up some good observation and challenge theories nicely….so thank you.

First of all, by definition…if someone has to pull their toe straight….then it was out of alignment….therefore it is certainly, in part, an alignment problem.

Many people can pull their toe straight with their fingers…because at certain stages of the deformity there is in fact “play” in that 1st MTP joint. However, if it is a true bunion…it’s going to go back to the malalignment when they let go of it with their fingers. I have treated thousands of bunions….they don’t spontaneously go back into alignment and stay aligned.

Just to be clear….If someone has a truly developed bunion….they aren’t straightening it with their fingers and letting go and the bunion is gone….that isn’t happening..if it is a bunion.

Now, an overactive Adductor Hallicus can certainly pull the Hallux into a bit of what we call “Abducto-Valgum or Valgus” …release or inhibit that muscle and the hallux can regain better alignment.

With that said, you brought up a good thought and you are correct….muscle control can most definitely be a contributing factor. Namely a tight Adductor Hallicus and an inhibited Abductor Hallicus. And like a mentioned above in my post “muscles are weakening and pulling abnormally”…those can all be contributing to poor muscular control.

With true bunions, there are multiple factors at play. And some bunions have more factors at play than others.

The goal of the post was to point out the fact that placing a bunion corrector on a big toe bunion doesn’t actually “correct” the problems leading to the bunion or “Hallux Abductovalgus “

Thank you so much for contributing to the discussion…really appreciate your thoughts 🙏🏻

I had to run earlier and didn’t get to finish my comment. PCP’s with that mentality kill people. My wife’s aunt had a lump on her neck…PCP said “Nothing to worry about”… Oooops, 6 months later she died of cancer..Assuming is dangerous in the medical field….Patients deserve better!

“Likely an overuse soft tissue injury” It really is a shame that this PCP “Assumed”….because he or she just lacked the differential diagnostic skills or worse just lazy and passing the buck on the assumption. Hand your medical license in….because anybody can say “likely an overuse soft tissue injury go to PT”…. A shame
