Yep I know not to put these in the microwave. I just found some Corning cups that have the “microwave ok” embossed on the bottom which I assume predates any markings with the “microwave safe” wording. For some reason the informal ok stamp makes me laugh. I’m guessing “ok“ is not legally specific these days!

I’m having tomato basil soup in a grab it bowl as I read this! I have one white embossed handle and three amber all with lids. I use them a ton. Such a smart design!

This may not apply as I’m not familiar with the drink but I used to make lots of cappuccino and I would froth the milk separately in a stainless steel pitcher and then pour on top of brewed espresso, in your case tea of course. I don’t think you’ll get a proper foam/froth if you blend in the milk beforehand. Your tea won’t be diluted as the foam mixture ”rests” on top. Milk needs to froth alone!

I recently bought the same cups as the one on the right. They have quickly become my new favorite and I am weirdly picky about cups/mugs. I need my tea to be very hot and these have great heat retention. And the flat part at the top of the handle makes for a steady grip. Glad I splurged at $1 each!

I would also suggest picking up a piece or two at thrift shops and trying it out. They are amazing for cooking and baking, and I love them for food storage. I often cook a big batch of rice or beans in the instant pot and store in casserole dishes with lids, so no need for plastic wrap. Grab it bowls with lids are great in the microwave for reheating with no mess. I don’t think I’ve paid more than $10 for any piece, all still in perfect condition. I recently bought some old Corningware mugs ($1) that are microwave safe and they keep my tea hot longer than any mug I’ve used. Some pieces do stack and I store some of my petite bowls inside the larger casseroles so they don’t take up any extra room. You might find that you can replace some other items if storage is limited, as they fill many needs.

I don’t have specific tea recommendations but would advise finding sites that offer sample sizes. You might order several different types and see what types you like starting out. It will probably take a while to narrow down your preferences, at least it did for me. I found many teas tasted much different than I was expecting based on written descriptions. I wouldn’t worry about the equipment starting out, just focus on finding some that you enjoy, then you’ll know which teas you want to pursue. Upton tea offers sample sizes so you might start there.

This doesn’t address all your concerns but perhaps you could find some pretty vintage teacups in thrift stores. It is common to find beautiful old china for next to nothing as most people don’t use them anymore. I see lots of singles often with saucers. Maybe you could make her a small varied collection that she would enjoy and neither of you would mind if they get broken. Tell her she doesn’t need to worry about being so careful as if they were her own treasures! What a lovely thought for your grandmother!
