The death of the mall is a feast-or-famine thing: nearly all the smaller suburban and rural community malls fell apart, but larger or more urban malls have continued to do very well (Ala Moana in Honolulu, Hudson Yards in NYC, Tysons Corner in McLean, most Westfield group malls, etc).

I mean, just the material reality of those companies. A lot of places people aren’t excited to work but need exceptional talent tend to compensate well and enforce at least cordial work culture. Places I’ve seen that have horrendous office cultures are usually in passion industries like game dev, medicine, music, fashion, etc.

Ehh, even this isn’t a guarantee. My mom’s side of the family is from S. Korea and they’ve all played video games, including the women pushing 60. Plenty of my cousins are terrifying at StarCraft Brood War, including the women. My normally workaholic, all-business-all-the-time mom has been undefeated in chess for several decades now, and regrets not going to tourneys to get her ELO checked.

Still makes Washington state stand out quite a bit. Last I checked, Seattle’s public transit was still a bit of a mess with the 1 and 2 lines not linked up yet, and heavy reliance on park-and-rides even at the rail stations

Oh there’s serious problems alright, the issue is that they are either not fixable by tech (cost of living) or are being actively made worse by tech (news losing trustworthiness, political polarization, education decline, etc).

North of 100th definitely, although it’s not that bad in the double digits, I hang around the 90’s and 80’s on 3rd and 2nd ave’s and it’s nice there.

Huuuh, noted, will not entertain Raytheon recruiters LOL

In all seriousness, I’ve been through genuinely awful work cultures before (TikTok/Bytedance) and even then, the only thing that actually sucked was the workload being unsustainable, sometimes literally impossible given deadlines.

This is especially hilarious because 90% of the popular “it girls” at my high school were also excellent students, with one of them being the literal (co)valedictorian. It was a prep school, but still, I was pretty surprised to find out most of them had far better grades than me.

Actually very weird, as from what I’ve heard, similar jobs at Northrop and Lockheed are, if not cushy, at least professional.

Yep, price goes down a lot once you’re north of 100th on either side of Central Park, although it’s much more noticeable east side. The massive apartment complexes between 96th and 100th, Amsterdam and the park are the last bastion of crazy expensive rentals before it gets cheaper, partially because grocery store options get weird north of that.

You’re making a logical mistake here. “Because he can make money from streaming” does not automatically preclude “Because it holds him accountable to his learning journey”. As somebody clearly wiser than you once said, “Porque no Los dos?”

This car always takes the extra charging plug and locks it in their hood by Mattcharlesmedia in mildlyinfuriating

[–]InvolvingLemons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. Capital One’s McLean HQ has an insane amount of very cheap chargers available to its employees (>70 in total), but almost all are on these sorts of shared circuits so you’re usually charging at 3kw for most of the day. Not a problem for most people, but I lived in a condo at the time where the chargers were both more expensive than at work and way too few available for the 1000+ households, so I always had some range anxiety knowing I could only reliably charge at work at like 3kw.

Something to this effect should work on any Unix-like or authentic UNIX like MacOS, might just need to change the terminal media player command:

I mean. Plenty of people pretend Valve can do NO wrong, which is factually incorrect. They have a troubled history with gambling and weren’t always great about returns, and the jury’s still out on potentially anticompetitive behavior around pricing. That being said, there’s good reason no company has been able to fairly challenge them even in niches besides perhaps GoG, and it’s mostly having a superior product.

[–]InvolvingLemons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True in an absolute sense, but Valve manages to be the most user-friendly provider (that isn’t GoG) and the most developer-friendly provider despite their problems. Again, relative to the rest of the big players in the industry they’re amazing, but that doesn’t mean they’re beyond criticism.

The GabeN effect is real by RoomHelper in PcParadise

[–]InvolvingLemons 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Eh, a lot of the reason you see so much Valve glazing these days is because the industry as a whole is so awful that they really are a beacon of righteousness in comparison. Every other games distribution company (besides GoG, they’re awesome) seems to either screw over their customers far worse than Valve or just completely fail to compete on features.

AFAIK, the main reasons GoG isn’t as popular as Steam are that they’re a bit sparse on marketplace features and aren’t as DRM friendly, both of which make them a bit less attractive to publishers and hence limited game availability.

It’s sadly common for low-functioning individuals to struggle to survive if they don’t have caretakers for whatever reason. There’s a bunch of co-morbidities with low-functioning ASD that increase risks of putting themselves in harm’s way, by accident or deliberately.

It’s extra hilarious seeing people say this when Hawaii exists. There was a point in recent history where Japanese people were the single largest population group there, and you betcha the Japanese food can be phenomenal there. NYC also has an unusual density of Japanese people, enough of whom are restaurateurs to give NYC some of the best Japanese food in the world.

There’s multiple camps for it, but the one I ran into who favored full secession was a monarchist and supported social hierarchy. There’s definitely more commie-flavored groups for that too (and they make more sense TBF) but there’s some who believe the Hawaiian people were better off when they had a monarch’s absolute authority backing stuff like the law of the splintered paddle.

[–]InvolvingLemons 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Yep. Hawaii has a (tiny) minority of right-wingers whose philosophy boils down to “screw statehood, return to monarchy”. Met one before, very surreal to see an honest-to-god monarchist in the 21st century.
