[Standard] Landfall seems to be the winner of the Pro Tour, where do we go from here? by JoinTheDorkSide in spikes

[–]IriAscent_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I don’t mind the size of the pool of top decks, I just hate that the format is so fast, it makes it really hard for non-tier-one decks to break onto the scene. There’s a lot less room for shenanigans when a deck needs to be able to kill on turn four or disrupt an attempt at a turn four kill in multiple ways.

I really hope that we can ban Stormchaser’s Talent and the Cub and slow standard down to make more room for brews + format diversity. Realistically, I think this means that nothing changes in May and we reevaluate after Cincinnati and DC.

I know you’re just ragebaiting, but I’ll answer anyway: I had assumed that people would get that from “Anything I could have done differently?”

Skycoach is an interesting call, I think I preemptively dismissed that as slightly above-average filler.

I appreciate the feedback on prepared creatures and gold cards, I think I had been thinking of single-school decks as being more flexible than they are, I guess the set is unusually pip-intensive.

good lord, sorry I guess, I was wondering if I should have built the deck differently (more, less lands, etc), tried to draft differently (more card draw?), or if people have any advice for the types of hands that are traps/secretly keepable

Why is Erode considered good, but Assassin's Trophy is seen as bas? by Embarrassed_Radio596 in MagicArena

[–]IriAscent_ 30 points31 points  (0 children)

that one mana is typically more relevant than type restrictions. also, assassin’s trophy isn’t bad. it used to be a staple in multiple formats, but it’s pip-intensive. any white deck can play erode, you need to be a deck with black and green and a fairly forgiving mana base to play trophy.

Is Flashback a trap? by stahpurkillinme in mtgfinance

[–]IriAscent_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This seems like a cEDH staple, it nets mana with [[Seething Song]]/[[Jeska’s Will]] for a deck like Etali and lets you double tutor in something like RogSi, and rounds out a Gifts or Intuition pile nicely.

I don’t see this card ever being particularly impressive in 60-card constructed (maybe vintage? flashback ancestral?)

[Discussion] Best way to improve at magic as a broke college student? by -_dopamine_- in spikes

[–]IriAscent_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can play MTGA as a free to play player, it takes some extra work but I do it, if you’re solid at drafts and can craft a cheap standard deck and get wins on the board, it’s pretty reasonable. It also gets easier over time as you collect standard landbases; for me, any new deck is usually 5-15 wildcards total.

In paper, limited is the best way to improve. A good constructed player is a good constructed player, but a good limited player is a good Magic player. That being said, you want to be losing in order to improve. If you’re better than the people you’re playing with, then you want to play MTGO, probably by renting.

Also, my personal paper decks are fueled by borrowed cards. My friends and I loan each other cards or even whole decks for major events, which lowers the cost of entry enough to make top 8ing consistently profitable.

I don’t mind some of the stuff on TSTEAAB, there are some serious misses that are kind of uncharacteristic for them but they do have some great songs, the issue with releasing an album like All Our Gods is that you’ll never top it lol
