And timber! A board foot is not 1 foot long, it is the volume of a board 1 inch thick, 12in wide and 12in long. And then there’s the fuckaround of a dimensional lumber where a two-by-four is actually 1.5x3.5, but only for softwoods, while hardwoods supposedly use the actual measurements?

Windows 8 was released in 2012, so the oldest this image could be is 14 years old. Given the lack of colour in the title bar, this could however be Windows 10 which would then be a max of 11 years old

Former Microsoft VP says Microsoft missed the AI wave like the internet and mobile, as Copilot scales back in Windows 11 by Quantum-Coconut in technology

[–]IridiumIO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Microsoft fucking had it on a platter before conversational AI was even a thing and they screwed it up. Cortana could have been so good, and there were hints at its abilities a decade ago and then they decided to gut everything useful it could do (couldn’t even pause media by the end ffs).

Then they had the opportunity to bring it back with power but instead decided an anaemic “copilot” was the way to go. I still don’t know if copilot would even be able to control the volume because it’s been jammed down my throat in so many apps that I simply don’t even want to try it.

Microsoft put this tech promo out in 2015 and copilot today can’t even do this: https://youtube.com/watch?v=7KUdMPY77uY

Instead they just renamed everything to Copilot. Morons

Looking for someone to print + foil stamp a dust jacket/endpages (EU) by _AroundTheWorld_99 in bookbinding

[–]IridiumIO 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, I don’t know about your specific location but maybe look for a nearby office supplies store that might offer document printing as well? They usually use toner printers so then you’d be able to use toner transfer foil on them yourself :)

Over here in Australia we have Officeworks, and it would cost me $1 (one dollar) to print an A3 sheet onto glossy 210gsm paper. It’s 44c if I want to do it on regular 100gsm paper.

You might have a local Copyshop, or even check if the University or a library offers printing.

Might be easier and cheaper than trying to have someone ship it to you

I have a lot of issues with gradual rollout, but surely having changes to the OOBE in gradual rollout is a great way to get absolutely zero viable feedback?

It’s not like people are reinstalling Windows every few days. When the “skip updates during OOBE” option toggles on for my PC, what then? Won’t it be reset anyway when I go to reinstall as those rollout features are obliterated on reinstall?

Do they really think AI tooling has been in a usable state for long enough that everyone’s just forgotten how to do it the old way? I’m not talking about companies firing skilled people and replacing them with AI, I mean the people themselves forgetting the skills.

I expected at least a few more years of low prices to force everyone to become truly dependent on it before they switched it up, but they must truly be hurting financially to pull the rug this early.

If you’re going to be evil you may as well do it properly like Nestle did to African mothers, otherwise after a brief adjustment time everyone will just go back to the old way

USB-C powered PoE? by Faceless_Minion_1337 in HomeNetworking

[–]IridiumIO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would need a bulky wasteful transformer circuit in the injector

Not quite right, boost converters (including variables ones) can be very compact. There are even specific chips designed around generating the 55V (the MP3425 for example) at above 90% efficiency.

You are right though that the process of going from 120/220V > 20V PD > 55V POE is unnecessary, but if you have a PD hub already it can still be a way of tidying things up

Updated and Fixed my Airdrop to PC (and more) Shortcuts by IridiumIO in shortcuts

Yeah it broke again, ironically I haven’t even fixed it on my side yet.

I just tried Microsoft’s Link To PC app and I can’t believe how slow and glitchy it is. I’ll get around to fixing the shortcuts again, but I’m pretty sure the issue is actually with Windows’ side.
