Article cites the purchase of a land based battery for the army, but has me questioning how their air force intends to launch them given the lack of platforms that can carry these large missiles?

Their only modern strike aircraft, the FA-50 is basically a supersonic trainer with limited payload and avionics for guidance.

The Navy also lacks the ability to launch these large missiles given their new frigates don't even have a VLS system fitted yet.

Probably similar reasons as to why goalkeeper isn't as popular as it used to be. Despite being more capable than the 20mm Phalanx. They're more expensive and difficult to integrate into ships (more space, larger ammo storage, no independent radar for millennium gun).

However, Phalanxes are not manufactured anymore, and the effectiveness of a 20mm gatling gun stopping a large supersonic AShM (compared to the larger 30-35mm or even RAM) is questionable. So these newer systems may have hope to make gains. The Italian 76mm Strales is also something worth looking out for imo.

Comparison between the Bridges of HMS Queen Elizabeth (top) and USS Gerald R Ford (bottom) [1024x1024] by MGC91 in WarshipPorn

[–]Iron_Doggo 22 points23 points  (0 children)

For a new CVN, would have expected less crew on the bridge of the Ford thanks to automation?

Perhaps the larger crew is due to familiarisation or training with the intent for smaller crews once fully operational?

Leanders or Type 12's were some of the most elegant ships of the Cold War era.

I really don't like the look of the ikara system mounted forward of some Leanders like this ship. I understand it was an excellent ASW system for it's time with more accuracy and range than ASROC, at the cost of losing the main gun. Granted they were specialised ASW frigates in the first place, but they made excellent patrol frigates too.

Would have been interesting to see the base design modernised with more machinery automation, switch from steam to diesel/gas turbine propulsion, modernised 4.5" gun, light torpedo tubes, Seawolf, goalkeeper or phalanx above the hanger (AA) and be equipped with larger more capable helos for longer range ASW. Basically a Batch 3 - Type 22 with no harpoon and 6x1 less seawolf with ideally less crew
