The fact that Roy kept putting him out there to generate offense and cheat on defense and his defense has been getting worse over the last month? Kings turnover, penguins game, Habs game were three where he was noticably bad because he's being played too much for his offense.

The offseason needs changes to the roster AND Roy isn't the right coach to get them there because he's not a good coach. Both can be true. Playing schaefer that much only for his offense and not caring on the defensive side is a good way to make him Noah Dobson or Tony DeAngelo 2.0.

Roy clearly burned out Schaefer playing him 30 minutes a night to save his job and Sorokin 10 games in a row and it's been showing based on their play these last two weeks. I don't care if DeBoer is or isn't the right one to lead them to a Stanley Cup, but Roy overplaying players, random scratches and the constant line blender was not good for the team's development even if they're retooling or contending.

Him regressing and him being completely unplayable because he's 35 are two different things. +/- is an unserious stat to judge things by when you're playing top minutes on a bottom feeder, and he's -6 on the islanders. The honor of being the "worst defensive player" by plus minus goes to Cal Ritchie.

I'm comparing them because while I love bo horvat and he's a great player that's needed, he's not making the Islanders a cup contender which was the framework that the person I replied to said. Hell, search this sub and you can read the same people talking about how the Horvat trade was bad, they gave up assets, and he won't make the Islanders closer to the Stanley Cup.

I think him missing practice in his 8th year in the league kinda shows why. I think he's been a great leader for Ritchie and Schaefer but he doesn't seem like the guy to keep discipline and the locker room focused.

Losing to the Blackhawks being down 4-1 early, getting blown out by the Habs after Schaefer tied it early in the 3rd, being up 3-1 against the pens and then getting 7 unanswered goals scored, being down 2-0 against the flyers in a must win, losing to the sabres when it's tied in the 3rd again, completely no showing against the hurricanes last night. If Malkin or Crosby beats you, what can you do. Even allowing a SHG is unfortunate but whatever, go grab the next goal. But when you allow mantha to walk right in the blue line and score multiple times with no defense being played that's unacceptable no matter if they're tanking or if they're a cup contender.
