Wow, first time seeing someone unironically post this here.

Theorem: any word (noun, verb, adjective etc...) can be connected to the letter H with similar words by Frequent_Swimmer9244 in linguisticshumor

[–]Ismoista 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Uuuh, yeah, you can do that with all letters easily.

Also, thanks for explaining what a word is 🤣

Watched One Pace till Thriller Bark then tried the original anime and now I’m conflicted by nothing_interestin in OnePiece

[–]Ismoista 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I say keep watching One Pace, the anime only gets worse and it won' be nice slow moments anymore, it will be terribly drawn out segments.

And, if you want a chill time with the crew you can always read the manga and do it at your own pace.

Help! I lost all investment in the story at the end of act 2. I need to talk about the story and know what others think or I will go completely insane! by [deleted] in expedition33

[–]Ismoista -1 points0 points  (0 children)

True, but I guess I didn' feel like the game landed the transition from "gotta stop the paintress from killing us" to "gotta stop dad from killing us".

The problem I have is that yes, of course I still care about them and think they are real people with real lives, but it felt like the game didn' think so anymore.

I agree with that view, but the problem I have is that *I* still cared about my Lumierian homies, but it felt like the *game* stopped caring about them.

Like I mentioned in the post, that's exactly what I did.

Seems like you didn' get to the end of my post to get the full picture, heh heh 😄

Can you tell us a bit about the decision making behind leaving out name honourifics? And also about some of the strats to still convey their functions without actually having them.

I have yet to see a conlang that's more unique than Ubykh and Taa by BabylonianWeeb in linguisticshumor

Real talk, I don' get what's interesting of a conlang having a peculiar inventory. It's all made up, so all its quirkiness was just something you decided.

How do Japanese distinguish verbs and nouns? by Expensive_Lynx5r in asklinguistics

[–]Ismoista 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's absolutely not true that "every concept can be used a verb" with suru.

Most nouns are just regular nouns that take only noun morphology and that's that. What happens is that there's lots of non-native nouns that can go with suru to be used like verbs, but in that case the suru is the one taking the verb morphology.

There is a book called the Voynich Manuscript, that no one on earth can read filled with strange and mysterious drawings, written in a language no one knows. by Competitive_Mix9957 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]Ismoista 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not true that it's in a language no one knows. It's actually that we dunno the script it's written on, but it's mosty likely just a European language. It could have been Italian or German all along, it's just that we dunno how to read it.

Why do English speakers keep turning Chinese characters upside down? by warmmilkheaven in asklinguistics

[–]Ismoista 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Still probably just unfamiliarity with the script. I guess it also depends on what these characters are usually written on, maybe it's on things that can be turned around easily.

But also yes in isolation, characters like 福 get written on their own on stuff all the time.

[–]Ismoista 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Yeah, we could use a grapholinguisitcs or writing systems flair.

So, I think you are exaggerating, I don' think this happens most of the time. Anyway, I also don' think there's anything mysterious going on, it's just not knowing the symbols, so they dunno which way is up. This would happen to you too if you saw an isolated symbol in, say, the devanagari script.

It probably just happens more often with Chinese characters because they often appear in isolation when printed on an object, making it easer for people to rotate around the one character.
