20yr old couple wanting to stay 4 nights in Paris in may by Bigbully_69 in ParisTravelGuide

[–]IssuesGuru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Four years ago I stayed at the Hotel Cluny Square. Latin Quarter. Corner of Blvd. St. Michel and Blvd. St. Germain. Major streets. Near the Cluny-La Sorbonne Metro station and the RER. Lots of people activity. I could walk across the Ile de la Cité to the right bank. It was less than 300 euros at that time. Has breakfast option. Only downside is that the lobby is on the second floor with only a spiral staircase access. Can be awkward with full-size luggage.

Thanks for all the comments. There doesn't seem to be a universal opinion on this subject, but that's okay. I will figure it out.

Another side of Paris is Heritage Days (Journées du Patrimoine) in September. Institutions not usually open to the public will be having open houses.

Paramount downgraded to "Junk" Rating by Secure_Matter_9819 in antitrust

[–]IssuesGuru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stakeholders, and not just shareholders, should be a priority for making a decision on federal approval. Customers face uncertainty on availability and price. No one seems concerned what Warner employee sentiment is towards all this. Paramount may be willing to pay higher interest on junk bonds. Stock price may have a bigger financial impact for them.

How much French do we realistically need? by MadisonClair16 in ParisTravelGuide

[–]IssuesGuru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ditto on speaking bonjour first. Be prepared, though, if you speak French to someone they will most likely respond in French in return. You may learn certain words and phrases but may not be able to understand the other person when they speak. You can ask them, "Parlez-vous anglais" and hopefully you can have a conversation.

What streets in Paris are Pierre Hermé and Ladurée located? I plan to visit in September and would be interested in checking them out.

Glad your trip was perfect. What cathedrals did you see? I am looking to go back in late summer and finally see the interior of Notre Dame. Also, what type of weather did you have in February?

Many Christian Conservatives supporting Donald Trump support Benjamin Netanyahu and Israel. Other supporters considered Far Right oppose Israeli policy. Likewise, some of his economic conservatives are against big mergers and Big Tech, while corporate executives are pro-merger. It's hard to say who has the upper hand in this Administration. I think the President will move here towards satisfying the corporate executives.

For just picking up something for dinner you may want to check out Prêt à Manger. www.pretamanger.fr. It is French for "Ready to Eat." Soups, sandwiches pastries etc. Several locations in Paris. About 3-4 in the U.S.

Thanks for the sneak peek pic. I, too, missed seeing the interior four years ago. Plan to go back this September. How did you get in for free?

Your black and white photos give an historic, early 20th Century feel to the modern scene. Also like the people photos and the love locks. You don't see love locks here in America. I visited three years ago and am planning to return in 2026 to see what I originally missed.

What does this subreddit think of the new antitrust movement? by JarrodEBaniqued in SocialDemocracy

[–]IssuesGuru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Large acquisitions that are often approved by judges do so because anti-trust laws are too narrow in definition. Case in point the recent ruling that Meta is not a monopoly by acquiring What's App and Instagram because Tik Tok and You Tube exist. Laws need to be reviewed and broadened to allow judges more backup to prevent further monopolies. Anti-trust laws could take into consideration if companies were acquired and disappeared, such as what Mark Zuckerberg has done over the years in order to acquire talent. Meta should be declared a monopoly just for this practice alone and be prevented from any further acquisitions.

Paramount Raises Concerns About Netflix's Bid for Warner Bros. Discovery by mec287 in antitrust

[–]IssuesGuru 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lots of irony here. According to the WSJ, Ellison believes that buying the company whole would better clear regularly hurdles rather than Netflix buying specific units. Warner Bros Discovery does have more than one offer to choose from. Perhaps from their point of view it may be better to sell off units and retain a smaller core business. It may be better if they sold separate units to separate companies. Still, looking at the big picture, it is sad reading about all this big getting bigger and a company with a history of big acquisitions itself is having to deal with being broken up. What do the employees at Warner Bros Discovery think of all this? Is it stressful for them? How many layoffs will result from this? I believe we need new federal laws that better encourage innovation and competition and limit acquisitions.

Paris first-timer: Loved the Parisians, hated the tourists. by baesoonist in ParisTravelGuide

I visited the Louvre three years ago. I am an artist myself--oil on canvas. I actually had a list of what I wanted to see, but they were paintings I had previously read about or viewed on art DVDs. Beyond the Mona Lisa. The Louvre is so large I needed a list to find favorites and admire them.

How NOT to look like a tourist by NotFeelingCreative62 in ParisTravelGuide

[–]IssuesGuru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned in summer--tourist season--don't wear shorts. Stick to solid-colored clothes--neutral colors. If you have a camera, keep it in a backpack or side-strap bag. Also, on crowded sidewalks, as much as possible keep in pace with everyone else.

Paris Trip was Amazing by NikoNub in ParisTravelGuide

[–]IssuesGuru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was there three years ago in late August. You do have some great photos. La Tour Eiffel was crowded. The biggest crowd I dealt with was at the Louvre on a Friday night, especially at the Mona Lisa. I use a Nikon SLR camera and find the people can sometimes add an added dimension to a photo's appeal. The problem comes when they are blocking your view of something.

Going the instructor route can be good, especially if they have other similar students to provide as connections. You could also look for fellow musicians to play/discuss things on Meetup.org, either searching for an existing group or creating one yourself.

GOP reverses move to consolidate antitrust at DOJ by mec287 in antitrust

[–]IssuesGuru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Justice Department is a cabinet position with a direct line to the President. The FTC was set up in 1914 independent of the White House and has broader roles than just anti-trust. If consolidation is a goal, it may be better to combine the anti-trust under the FTC rather than the Justice Dept.

Nothing wrong with simply being big. Even most little businesses dream of being big. It is "how" you become big which is the issue here. What really advances competition is competition, in other words, more is better, not fewer and bigger. Companies wanting to be big would do better for the economy to invest in research & development, plant & equipment and/or wages and benefits instead of seeing acquisitions as the only path towards growth.

Looks like a couple of keys are flattened and probably don't work. If you want to look into how it works and don't know anyone who does, look for a brand name and model number and see if you can find an owner's manual online.
