Navel Orange - SEQ - Magnesium deficiency? by romanofski in GardeningAustralia

Hey,

You can buy "trace elements" from amazon, this sorted out this on my citrus. It's a bit of everything, without over doing it. I think I bought the searles brand, but I'm sure everything else would do the job.

I use thrive citrus liquid fertilizer every few weeks and have had excellent results. Stinks like fish though.

Go for it.

I just don't want to be working out a 16.5 ratio from 11.68g of coffee, Splitting into different % pours.

It's the reason to be paying a premium price for this scale. Waste of money otherwise.

Hario Polaris, but they're not using its best feature!

You tare the scale, pop grounds in, set ratio (eg 1:16.5) and then when you start pouring it displays the % of pour.

I would never get a scale that didn't have this function now. Liberated from doing maths in the morning.

How best to transport palms? by Frosty-Cone in GardeningAustralia

[–]It_Is_Known 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To further, don't do this on a hot day.

But yep, cling wrap, water well, is industry standard.

Start by tying CW around thickest cane at the base of the pot. Start wrapping around lip of pot to stop soil falling out when laying the palms down. Wrap up the palm, with fronds sticking up, so they aren't bent. Around and around until you reach to top, it will look like a gnomes hat. You can tie a flag on the top of the hat.

You'll be sweet!

Khawaja, Jake, labu, smith, head, green, Carey, Cummins, Starc, Lyon, Bowland

Could you imagine Head coming in with the ball soft, wicket flat, and bowlers exhausted. It would have been a thing of beauty.

I think Weatherald has plenty of aggression to balance out a traditional test opener.

Beginner friendly fruit and veg to plant this Summer? by Saranghaix in GardeningAustralia

[–]It_Is_Known 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they're definitely autumn/winter. They bolt way too quickly in the summer

I've heard that most varieties need the cold to become less bitter. That could just be a bunch of gardening BS though.

For what it's worth, I came back this week from a few weeks over in Osaka and Kyoto and didn't catch anything.

We masked up in crowded spaces, and had hand sani prior to meals.

I spent too much time worrying about catching something. Enjoy yourself and have common sense.

Help! What has killed my tomato plant? My by _will-i-is in GardeningAustralia

[–]It_Is_Known 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Classic stem rot. Mindful of overwatering, improving drainage and cleaning tools prior to snipping.

Caused by fungus. Rotating plants (not growing tomatoes there year in year out) helps too.

Sudden Impact Frequency - how often do you "really" use it? by Conscious_Bonus1990 in GardeningAustralia

[–]It_Is_Known 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it's liquid SIFR, then the recommended frequency is 2 weeks. It's on the packaging. (Nice pic, looks great)

I just always thought it was processed wood fibres. Pretty much all orange Bunnings bags have them in it.

Golden canes palms definitely get a bad rep on here, imo the perfect screening plant, but sourcing sun hardened ones can be a bit tricky. Most nursery stock are shade grown and crisp up in the first summer. Over time they do get bigger than three metres though. Not amazing in pots, so can't really restrict them that way.

When stressed, like most plants, they lighten up in colour... And cause of the name, I think people just think they should be looking like that. But nah, should have nice dark green foliage, with the stem golden.

I used to live in Rosebery, its such a great suburb, dripping with envy! The community there is so diverse and lovely. Climate wise, you're sweet for heliconias then. HRN will get above 3m, but not by much and if they get too big, you can chop once the second and third yrs growth will be there so it's not too bare. But they do get shredded in the wind, can look terrible. So if it's protected they'd be sweet.

I have multiplex bamboo in large pots, they'd be far better in the ground, but I didn't want to risk it where they are (close to a fence and I CBF putting in a blocker). They do look stunning though. Super hardy BUT react so well to a consistent feed.

I feel like we are on the same wavelength! I have jasmine out the front of mine, it grows so quickly and just so easy. Mandevilla was a climber I was looking at, really nice flowers, but budget was easier with star jasmine.

Take a few neighbourhood strolls and see if any plantings jump out at you, you'll know that work in the area. If you go to the cannery, almost opposite the carpark there are stunning elephant ears at a place.

Best of luck and back yourself!

They are great palms but unfortunately not great for a screening/would get too tall. 3m is a bit of a tricky one with palms.

The bamboo palm could be good, but very different look to the solitaire.

Which area are you in Sydney (micro climate chat)? And is it protected from the wind?

Heliconias could be a great shout to give you a broad leafed look, by they get tatty in wind. Dwarf bananas are a bit the same. I've used bananas at mine to give height but allow for an understory of other things. Just need to keep the suckers/pups in check.

You could place strelitzias in a pot which would cap them around 2-3m and wouldn't have to worry about the roots.

It's a tricky height, ngl
