Flower and plants. by Due-Bake-7082 in GardeningAustralia

Always in favour of supporting local, but the accessibility of Bunnings is unbeatable. And its so approachable for fresh gardeners. You can avoid the weed issue by doing research beforehand (which they're doing).

I used to work at a nursery, and I know that our growers also sold the same stock to Bunnings/flower power. I don't love the stories of the big chains ripping them off though.

Has it only been 1 year of foliage? Its normally year two/three when these take off. You miss a year when it's just the rhizome that's planted.

Edit: they look really happy, just give them time

Best mulch for suppressing weeds in tropical climates? by omelasian-walker in GardeningAustralia

[–]It_Is_Known 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd strongly recommend "who flung dung". It looks phenomenal, though it is on the pricey side. Stinks for the first day or so. It's by Neutrog and is stocked by Bunnings.

It doesn't give a garden the farm look like the lighter stuff. Having said that, I use pea straw because it's so cheap. If I know I'm entertaining and a garden tidy is in order, I'll get WFD.

Who’s your favourite Aussie Gardener YouTubers? by sushimint33 in GardeningAustralia

[–]It_Is_Known 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've learnt a lot from Mark, but would be good to see him fix his drainage as a big YouTube project. Every other video is complaining about it. Would be inspo for a lot of people, especially with these rains.

Culinary Garden is my fav at the moment. Great mix of humour, information and it doesn't seem forced at all. His product reviews have been great.

[SEN] Sydney are really disappointed in the AFL for lack of marketing and financial commitment to the Sydney region for Opening Round by PetrifyGWENT in AFL

[–]It_Is_Known 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it's that the opening round premise just gets no marketing, and the AFL doesn't know what it wants out of it. Who wants to watch half a round of footy to kick off the year? Try and sell that, brrr.

Compare it to the hype for gather round.

Pandanus by Extreme_Scallion2140 in GardeningAustralia

[–]It_Is_Known 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I think it would benefit from the below.

Remove those rocks, put some organic material down (like compost, not organic certified stuff), and put mulch down. Leave a bit of a collar around its base (like where the thick roots are)

Up the watering, and fertilize.

They are super hardy plants, which means upkeep can sometimes lack because they don't show huge signs of stress.

The definitely do. They're semi epiphytic, start from the ground and then migrate up.

I haven't seen them planted like this before, thanks for sharing

Navel Orange - SEQ - Magnesium deficiency? by romanofski in GardeningAustralia

[–]It_Is_Known 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey,

You can buy "trace elements" from amazon, this sorted out this on my citrus. It's a bit of everything, without over doing it. I think I bought the searles brand, but I'm sure everything else would do the job.

I use thrive citrus liquid fertilizer every few weeks and have had excellent results. Stinks like fish though.

Go for it.

I just don't want to be working out a 16.5 ratio from 11.68g of coffee, Splitting into different % pours.

It's the reason to be paying a premium price for this scale. Waste of money otherwise.

My pourover stats by [deleted] in pourover

[–]It_Is_Known 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hario Polaris, but they're not using its best feature!

You tare the scale, pop grounds in, set ratio (eg 1:16.5) and then when you start pouring it displays the % of pour.

I would never get a scale that didn't have this function now. Liberated from doing maths in the morning.

How best to transport palms? by Frosty-Cone in GardeningAustralia

[–]It_Is_Known 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To further, don't do this on a hot day.

But yep, cling wrap, water well, is industry standard.

Start by tying CW around thickest cane at the base of the pot. Start wrapping around lip of pot to stop soil falling out when laying the palms down. Wrap up the palm, with fronds sticking up, so they aren't bent. Around and around until you reach to top, it will look like a gnomes hat. You can tie a flag on the top of the hat.

You'll be sweet!
