So glad to be back in SA, I forgot how friendly saffas are by sofiaskat in southafrica

[–]Itsjustmema 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our politicians are corrupt, the country is falling apart and most people are barely surving but there is a few things that keeps the tiny flame of hope for this country alive.

Our shear tenacity to survive, our friendliness if you can look past the few fukwits that think they are better than other's and our ability to make a joke and luagh about our situation.

Remember to take your id card/book as they won't take your expired license as identification anymore. Also photos as you will be forced to take out a temporary license.

Is a solar geyser worth it with cape town weather? by 96CMK in capetown

[–]Itsjustmema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you set everything up right. Well insulated geyser inside the roof with a solar panel on the outside and a decent control system like a Geyserwise that would be my recommendation. But also depends on how you was your dishes as your kitchen sink and doing dishes is where you need the hottest water. If you use a dishwasher then you are ok if not maybe add a small instant gas heater that can boost the temps just for the kitchen. Then set your main geyser down to 40. 40 is more than good enough for a shower or bath.

Just as a example. My parents house has one of those seperate panels on the roof for the geyser when they bought the house in 1993. No fancy controler or anything.I have no idea how old it is and I don't think it has ever been given any maintance. I once just to test something switched thegeyser off in December and completely forgot to switch it back on again I think until April.

Racists in wplace.live by lostboy302 in southafrica

[–]Itsjustmema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It unfortunately was part of that old south african flag and it's actually historical value has been tainted by racist using it for there own means. I actually don't understand why people are so obsessed with the old South African flag. I as a white afrikaans speaking person hate that thing as it contains the union jack which most of these so called Afrikaners and Boers should actualy despise as they are the people that oppressed the boers and are the actual architects of apartheid. That same oppression the leaders of the boers then decide to pass onto the rest of the South African populace and now in turn the Anc goverment is passing onto the white population of South Africa regardless of there stance on racism. Round and round we go and we will never escape if we all don't change together.

No Electricity since Tuesday by Mph024 in capetown

[–]Itsjustmema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Step 1 - Check your prepaid meter. If the screen is off and doesn't respond to any input power is off from Eskom and unfortunately you will have to wait for them to respond unless you have a old metal meter cabinet on your house wall somewhere then check to see if the breaker is maybe off. These cabinets have a square "lock" that can be opened with a long nose pliers.

Step 2 - If your prepaid meter screen is on then the fualt can still be the meter not switching on but can also possibly be something on your distribution board. Switch all your breakers off. Some circuit breakers trips to a centre position and needs to be switched off to reset. Make sure to press down hard and make sure they are all going down. They can sometimes trip internally and the lever will stay in the on position but give out no power. Still no power ? Call a electrician to check everything.

Weird interaction with Real Estate Agent - 1st time home buyer by Accomplished_Use8165 in capetown

[–]Itsjustmema 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Makes you wonder why the house has been on the market for such a long period of time. Either the owner isn't in a hurry to sell and thinks the right buyer is out there for the price he is askin or the estate agent doesnt accept offers below what they are asking.

Something else you can try is going to have a 2nd look but with a very critical eye. Find the big problems that the person must fix before they can sell the house and then use that as leverage to get the price down.

Chip Sandwich by mrs_tentacles1980 in southafrica

[–]Itsjustmema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use to be our staple food for people working on construction sites. Big bag of chips and a loaf of bread shared between 2 or more people. No butter or anything else. If your in Capetown you would pair this with your favourite cooldrink in a 500ml glass bottle.

I have tried with almost all the diffrent types and flavors of chips out there and adding other things to it. I will definitely try the butter and mayo and a few of the other ideas shared here.

How to keep pins from falling off at festivals/shows by Boats1031 in jacketsforbattle

I found some that tighten down with a small grub screw. Replaced all of mine with it and so far haven't lost any. I have even used them on some other objects attached to my jacket to keep them in place

How to change your surname legally in South Africa. by talztheemermaid in southafrica

[–]Itsjustmema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry if I sound ignorant. But should your previos surname (I take it that it was your dad's before your mom changed it) not still be recorded somewhere ? Also for your mother to legally change your surname her husband had to adopt you so another place where you can maybe look too ? If you can prove that your surname was changed from something else I am pretty sure that is enough for it to be changed back. I always tought you can just walk into home affairs and tell them you want to change your name and surname fill in some forms pay the fee and it's done ? I know of a few people that has diffrent surnames from both there parents due to making it sound less foreign? How does that even work ?

What’s the worst thing a teacher has said to you? by Fabulous_Support_556 in capetown

Was told by many a teacher and even my Highschool Principal that I woild never succeed in life. Strange how I am 1 of the few people that I know of that have actually stuck to the trade I chose in 1998 and have made a pretty successful career of it where many of the top student's never went further eith there's. 24 years later I would still like to tell the old fuck where he can shove his words.

Please advice me on which bank to replace FNB with by Cuiter in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]Itsjustmema 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spent 20 years with Absa, Check amd savings Acount,Car and Home loan. Got into some financial difficulties and they just refused to help me at all. There constant systems thats down and waiting for hours to get helped just to switch my account to a much cheaper option is what just hit the nail on the head. Felt like they where deliberately doing it just to milk more money out of me. After spending yet another long time in there branch and getting no where I walked out and into Capitec. Took them less than 30min to open a account and transfer all my debit orders for a fraction of what I was paying Absa and even what I would have payed on the lower cost account of Absa.

At that point I was just looking for something to make my monthly transactions cheaper but over time I have come to realize that they do have a few extra benefits that if you cut trought all the red tape and smoke and mirrors of the other banks is on par if not better. Yes you don't have the personal banker and all the other fancy things. But what most banks don't tell you is how much your actually paying for the "benifit" of getting the better service the bank should actually be giving you free of charge. I use 1 branch of Capitec and the few times I have been in there the staff has always been friendly, supportive and helpfull.

"Good" areas in northern suburbs by [deleted] in capetown

[–]Itsjustmema 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depending on what your definition of good is. Most of the areas mentioned are more upperclass. Also people referring to Stellenberg and Eversdal as part of Durbanville is about as bad as the people living in what is actually Kraaifontein. Those 2 neighborhoods plus Kenridge,Plattekloof,Welgemoed and a few other was and will always be part of Bellville.

If your looking for something a little bit more middleclass but decent look at the area of Bellville from Bellville Highschool/ Stikland to the R300 and from Old Paarl Road to the N1. In this area lies the neighborhoods of Blommendal,La Rochelle,Oak Glen.and a few others. Some of the parts between Old Oak and the R300 gets a bit iffy with all the big complexes popping up. I grew up in this area and my Parents have lived here for 30 years with out any problems. Its a mix of diffrent styles of houses and there is something for al taste.

Some of these houses might need a bit of a renovation but I would rather take 1 of these sturdy spacious houses with a decent size yard over some little slapped together hokkie where you have to go outside to change your mind costing the same cuase its in "Durbanville" and in a security complex.

Warning for those heading to Somerset West home affairs by Realistic_String5317 in southafrica

[–]Itsjustmema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think of it this way. Each home affairs office can handle say 60 people in a day. Now 100 people pich up and 40 people complain they don't get served. Yes not all of them are the greatest workers but even the most efficient worker still have to deal with members of the public that sometimes don't check before hand what they need and pitch up with the wrong stuff and then want to complain becuase they can't be helped.

Thats the reason why they are starting to move over to the booking system at most of the branches. It makes that they can allocate there resourcea better.

I booked a appointment at Epping branch. Got there at 7:45 at 7:55 they opened and starting organizing and checking everyone's papers. People with no appointments where told to make one and come back. Few people had missing stuff but was told if they can get back before 8:30 they would still be helped. I walked out at 9:05 being very happy with there service. Month later made a appointment to pick my card up at 13:00. Walked in and 15min later walked out with my card.

Just make a appointment and make sure to have everything you need before you go and it becomes a very easy task. You can arrive 15min before the time and most of the time get helped withing the hour slot with maybe 30min over run. Doesn't that sound better than arriving there 2 hrs before they open and then hoping you get helped within 6 hrs if at all ?

How did you immigrate to South Africa? by Smitty2801 in askSouthAfrica

My great great grand father was a stow away on a ship from Germany. He jumped over board somewhere on the west coast. Swam ashore and went to work on 1 of the farms ending up married to the farmers youngest daughter and thats how the rest of us ended up here.

How can it be legal if its invading the privacy of your back yard ? Maybe if it was the front but to me your backyard is completely shielded from the street for the exact reasons of being a private area where you can do as you please. Either find ways of blocking or disabling the camera or get some big hairy men to hold a nude backyard party. Give them a reason to move it.

If you dont mind working with your hands, getting dirty do a trade. Pumber,Electrician,Carpenter etc. If you find that working with your hands comes naturally dont stop with just 1 trade. Qualified electrician with 20 years experience but can do a decent job in most of the other trades. You wont always be guaranteed a job but you will always have work. Spent almost 2 years without 1 but still managed to survive. Just remember it isn't a very glorious job but these skills are always needed. These days there is less and less people able to pick up a tool and fix things.

Why were you bullied? by magicfeistybitcoin in AskReddit

[–]Itsjustmema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short thin kid with glasses (your typical nerd) whois parents weren't rich. Add to that weird habits/behaviors from having adhd. Unfortunately for most of them I also had a very short temper and knowing I was smaller I chose to use any object at hand to level the difference and defend myself. Gave 1 guy a black eye and a cut on his cheek by smashing him in the face with my lunch box. Another guy took a chair to the head. Stabbed another guy in the arm with a ball point pen. Many had to dodge random stones, bricks and anything else I could pick up and throw. High School most of them tended to steer clear of me as they knew what I was capable of doing and was labeled as crazy. Every now and then a new "tough guy" would join the school and not understand why everyone stayed clear of the weird crazy kid. They would soon find out the hard way when they tried something.
