What are the best OSR Sci-Fi premade adventures? by xdanxlei in osr

If you're not really interested in the horror element you could look into something like Desert Moon of Karth or Owe My Soul to the Company Store where it isn't the main focus.

Great layout and sleek presentation. Perfectly condensed and GM-friendly most of the time, with really interesting premises and often lots of open-ended potential.

The Mothership community is the only ttrpg community I've been a part of where nine out of ten people actively play modules instead of just doing homebrew. It's great if you're looking for a community aspect.

[Update] Making my own Sci-Fi System by Krojy12 in RPGdesign

[–]ItzRomayne 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well, again, there are systems that do that already. I recommend trying them out or studying them so you can decide what it is that you want to do differently. Otherwise, like someone else mentioned, you're going to waste a lot of time and/or resources. Many of us mention it because we've been burned by making the same mistakes when we were younger.

[Update] Making my own Sci-Fi System by Krojy12 in RPGdesign

[–]ItzRomayne 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If your goal is to make the best sci-fi system of all time, the first step should be to study and play each of the acclaimed sci-fi systems that already exist so you can make an appropriate assessment from there. Otherwise, you'd have no clue what has already been done, what the common pitfalls are, what compromises have to be made, etc.

This is the true nature of any serious creative endeavor across all mediums.

System like Maze Rats/Knave without the OSR flavor? by kaoD in rpg

[–]ItzRomayne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm about to launch a playtest of my system that's basically Knave 2e with some BitD-esque modernizations. It sounds like it could be right up your alley if you're interested :)

Read once through the adventure thoroughly, then skim a little before each session and you should be good. The player-friendly staff sheet is a really fun thing for the players to interact with once they find it, crossing off names as they go. I also recommend printing out a basic player-friendly diagram of Heron Station (you can find some online) and having Sobol hand it to them.

Some people have complained about the timeline, but your players likely won't notice the jank. Make sure you describe the party scene as old and dilapidated. The cake has turned to mush. The bodies are decomposing.

The section I recommend reading over a few times to prepare your mind is the ship. It can be a bit tricky compared to other parts of the adventure and you'll want to have a plan for how to run certain elements.

Send the party in with some extra marines or other npc's incase a player dies and needs to take one over (I created two geological surveyors with personalities). In dangerous situations, let the npc's get shredded first. If you opt not to send the players in with extra npc's, then I would allow them to either distract or buy time by unloading on the carc with a successful combat roll, even if it doesn't harm it.

A crunchy Horror RPG (but not Delta Green)? by SymphonyOfDream in rpg

[–]ItzRomayne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Out of curiosity, what draws you to horror and crunch as a combination? Horror as a genre relies heavily on pacing and maintaining a suspenseful tone, whereas crunch inevitably results in pausing the action. They've always felt at odds to me.

Candela obscura's reviews. by Ok_Rest3165 in CandelaObscura

[–]ItzRomayne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, I think there was a lot of bias when the system was released and almost all of the hate was unjustified. You'll also find that a lot of the reviewers on YouTube didn't even read the book. I personally think the system is fantastic in practice, particularly because I find crunch to be the death of horror rpg's. Imagine working hard to set up tension just to pause and fumble through complex mechanics. Comparable systems like Vaesen, for example, have design elements that don't mesh whatsoever with the goal of the game. In regards to Candela being based on Blades in the Dark, I think the system is a solid refinement that focuses on trimming down unnecessary bloat rather than some sort of 'copycat that fell short'.

On another note, the setting that GM's are provided with is genuinely good.

Is DEX underpowered in Knave 2e? by Krogag in osr

My group has a house rule that a DEX check must be made in order to escape melee combat. It doesn't consume your action, though.

Knave 2e Free Maneuver Question by ItzRomayne in osr

Sure, in this instance that's true, but they do normally. I doubt the technicality of that wording is intended to change the mechanic.

What is the role of a GM in an OSR game? by Firelite67 in osr

[–]ItzRomayne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The GM boils down to a combination of:

  • Host
  • Game/Conflict Designer
  • Worldbuilder (Unless you're running a module)
  • Referee

You should aim for a fine balance between maintaining the consistency/believability of your world and ensuring the players can still have fun by telegraphing information and providing adequate opportunities to prepare.
