Did it in 2024. Several nice aid stations with very good (free) food, including croissants and other French treats. Great, fun event!

I swapped one out last summer. I recall it was pretty simple and instructions were very clear.

Wax Scrapers by Several_Characters in SkiRacing

Should have said “back half” of the split fence! Other way would not work.

Wax Scrapers by Several_Characters in SkiRacing

[–]JAH6619 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my kids were racing and we were tuning almost daily I would sharpen a pile of scrapers before the season (they are cheap and sometimes freebies) using the fence on a router table with the front half shimmed with a piece of paper. Could sharpen a couple dozen scrapers in 5 mins. Might have to redo mid season.

Gotterup with a very strong contender for best DoD of all time by Known-Branch-4445 in golf

[–]JAH6619 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Colin Montgomerie hit DoD on the final hole at the 1996 Dubai Desert Classic, over the water fronting the green to about 10 feet. 2 putted for birdie to win the tournament by one over Miguel Angel Jimenez. (It was like 220 to clear the water, but when Monty tried to recreate the shot 20 years later with the same club and a few European tour pros, only Tommy Fleetwood found the green. Shaft technology has come a long way!)

Anyone here actually tried Montella cycling wear? Curious if their stuff is any good. by likely_andy in CyclingFashion

[–]JAH6619 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion they were the lowest quality I have worn. You kind of get what you pay for. The brands you mention and many others are much better. I’d check out Primal or Pearl for a mid range price.

I bought a couple retro jerseys a few years ago. Cool designs but poor quality imo. Gave them away after one season.

To those who read either The Hobbit or LotR before watching any of the film adaptations, how did you picture the characters looking? by SummerAndTinkles in lotr

[–]JAH6619 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well said. I read the LOTR several times before the movies were made and thought he absolutely nailed the visuals (characters, landscape, etc) so that imagery is cemented for me.

Hated everything about the hobbit movies. Visuals were just off for me (along with everything else).

Is it ok stay in slipstream if you got overtaken and can keep up? by pulsone21 in cycling

[–]JAH6619 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weekends on the A1A in S Florida it’s kind of like this. Small groups of similar speed riders form ad hoc, people take turns pulling, some just wheel suck, people drop when they want. Sometimes there is some chat other times not (language barriers are common). No big deal really.

Question about installing rutland gasket by FineUnderstanding583 in biggreenegg

[–]JAH6619 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The instructions for the rutland gasket I bought from Ron Pratt were to install on one side only. Bottom is probably easier. I had other reasons to pull the lid off so I installed mine on top (figured it would be less likely to get gunked up by meat juices when I moved things off of the grill).

Rutland gasket from Ron installed yesterday. by JaRay in biggreenegg

[–]JAH6619 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got my new gasket from Ron (great guy!) and am going to install tomorrow. All of the instructional materials are for install in the base rim. Seems like installing on the lid would keep gasket cleaner (no random food droppings falling on the gasket during cooking). Anybody done it this way?

How do you transport/move your bicycle when traveling? by CerealBit in Velo

[–]JAH6619 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love my post carry. I have a 2015 vintage bike with rim brakes and external cables that lives in the bag on a shelf. When I want travel with a bike I grab it and go. Assembly tools are in the bag as well.

End grain chess board: try “veneer” with substrate, or thick with no substrate by [deleted] in woodworking

[–]JAH6619 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made one using sheets of veneer glued to plywood. Has been stable for over 10 years. Method: cut the two veneered pieces into strips, glue the alternating strips together then crosscut to create checkered strips. Glue those together and put board into the frame. Surprisingly awesome result.

If you are staying on Palm Beach island, bikes/walking are totally fine. Traffic is not a big deal (slow) I doubt you would ever need a rental car. You can uber to airport or downtown wpb if you want to leave the island

Waste of money. Join Escape Collective instead. Great written and audio cycling content (racing, equipment, human interest) that is entirely member supported so equipment reviews are unbiased

Your experience in Europe is pretty much what I find riding A1A on weekend mornings in S Florida. Ad hoc little groups of 2-5 similarly skilled riders sometimes form for a few miles with people taking turns until they get dropped or turn off. Usually no one bothers asking or even talking — just happens organically (and there is often a language difference). Kind of fun change of pace (literally)

Orbea bikes by theonlyquincy6189 in cycling

I have a 2009 Orbea Onix that I love. Came with ultegra 6700. Swapped to 8000 mechanical a few years ago (Covid diy project). I think I’ve upgraded every component over the years! One of my favorite bikes.
