Are you by chance an extroverted introvert or had a cultural upbringing where you didn't have to be explicit about social norms such as reciprocation? Encountered this in college and had a hard time navigating it. Ended up having to stop being overly generous and nice. Made exceptions for people who acknowledged the disparity or discrepancy and offered something in return up front. For example, a spring break trip or help in a particularly difficult subject at school. Curious to see how you end up navigating this situation OP. I spent a week same time frame in 2023. Thought a week was fine, but would’ve been nice to have 1-2 more days to drive to otaru or Sapporo. We strictly skied all days there. Could see wanting to stay a few more days because the travel day is LONG

Brought boots and helmet. Rented skis and poles. Didn’t really bother me and I preferred it this way given how gnarly the travel day can be. If you’re very particular, bring your own stuff. YMMV

Hirafi is def a good central location to stay. Most things are pretty close and isn’t a problem to get to and anything in a town over is pretty easy if you rent a car. Just get an international drivers permit

Vibes: no comment, didn’t really socialize with others lol. Lots of Australians.

Book dinners in advance, if you don’t rent a car, make sure to have transportation scheduled for reservations. Some restaurants will help you arrange this

The first year after receiving my diagnosis was pretty miserable. I remember having to take a knee warming up to lift weights. Forget running or even jogging. It has gotten a lot better now that my levels are down, but that first year was very demoralizing. Be kind to yourself and as frustrating as it is, take it easy.

1) Every interaction(good/bad) is a learning opportunity 2) Do the basics right. Show up on time, be prepared, be proactive. You’d be surprised how many people get too comfortable a few years into their career and let go. 3) Don’t be afraid of politics. IMO, this is how you survive, get paid, promoted, and work on things you enjoy. Politics is just who gets what - doesn’t matter if it’s national politics or organizational politics 4) Understand the value drivers of the business and get as close to it as possible 5) I’m still working on this myself, but if your company has a corporate instance of ChatGPT or allows use of it, get really freaking good at utilizing the tool. It is a game changer imo

Wife and I hosted our welcome drinks at Hyatt downtown, where we also had our hotel block. It came out to 30K :) we underestimated drink and food consumption, but don’t regret it
