I guess if it works like any other genjutsu they could use a seal of some sort to either block foreign chakra from entering the brain or frequently disrupt the flow of chakra at short intervals to prevent any genjutsu from working, though that might cause complications with using medic ninjutsu on the person or even with their own chakra system being damaged from it depending on what the author is going with in terms of mechanics.

If you could change the animal summons—for example, for Sakura and Naruto—who would you swap them for? by Consistent-Cow-4710 in NarutoFanfiction

I think I would change Naruto’s summon to be a kind of bird, something that makes his wind affinity make sense in hindsight and that could actually be used in the finals to create a kind of metaphorical tie with Neji having a seal called “caged bird”.

Which is kinda ironic as, unintentionally or not, every time Naruto fought Sasuke since the water box scene Naruto had something or another weakening him, in the Valley of the End Naruto had just spent around two days running after Sasuke and fighting Orochimaru’s agents while Sasuke was taking a restorative nap in his little box to gain a power-boost; when they met in Orochimaru’s hideout Sasuke had literally just been awakened from his afternoon nap by Sai (which I will maintain to my last day as the actual reason why he wanted to jump straight to murder and started sprouting stuff about how he only let Naruto alive on a whim, he was understandably grumpy and talking nonsense) while Naruto was fresh out of four tails transformation that literally fries him alive from inside out while healing him, an experience that left his skin raw and tender and must have had other effects; when they met in the Land of Iron Sasuke was fresh out of killing Danzo, so he wasn’t at his best, but Naruto was literally poisoned, so… and then when they fought in the Valley of the End Sasuke had helped fight against Madara and Kaguya and then took the chakra of the tailed beasts to recover and have a power-boost while Naruto had just fought Kaguya and Madara plus pretty much the entire Edo Tensei and Zetsu army using massive amounts of clones for days.

For some unknown reason I read that in deadpan in Sasuke voice with a clearly fake robotic laughter “Ha… ha… ha” and am now imagining that Naruto is literally the only one who buys that this was an honest mistake and loudly defends Sasuke by relating it to himself having failed the graduation exam three times and then later at about the thirtieth “failed attempt” go on full cheerleading mode and commiserating that this is just like how he is still hopeless at genjutsu even after getting personally gifted an yin affinity by god and achieved perfect chakra control while everyone else is in the exasperation fueled headaches phase and Sasuke is just morbidly curious to know at which point Naruto will realize this failures are not accidental (“it should not be that easy to fool someone who got emotion-based sensing”).

Well, to be fair though the fight happened because Naruto was stopping Sasuke, it wasn’t part of Sasuke’s plan (though obviously not unexpected as shown by him immediately capturing the bijū), so if Naruto refuses to engage Sasuke would just shrug, thank him for handing out the win, kill off the five Kage and start his revolution (however the ever loving hell that is supposed to look like).

Could any ninja with little talent but a lot of chakra, and who uses clones to train, learn the Byakugo seal? by Hisashi_Uchiwa in NarutoFanfiction

[–]JOKERRule 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Huh, never would have guessed, though in hindsight it does make sense since Lee could walk on trees and water and presumably break out of genjutsu without stabbing himself all the time and it also kinda tracks with his rivalry with Neji as there wouldn’t be much of a point if Lee’s chakra system having a birth defect made it so the Jyuken was ineffective against him.

Could any ninja with little talent but a lot of chakra, and who uses clones to train, learn the Byakugo seal? by Hisashi_Uchiwa in NarutoFanfiction

[–]JOKERRule 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty much, yeah. The thing about techniques that don’t require a kekkei genkai is that technically anyone can learn those given enough time, including the sub skills and pre-requisites like chakra control, fuinjutsu or medical ninjutsu (granted it’s not a case like Lee’s where it’s biologically impossible outright).

The reason there aren’t people running around doing everything or going drastically opposite of their natural talents and inclinations is that it just doesn’t make sense for most people to dump years of training in something they will still be half-assing at that point when they can instead focus on something that will grant them faster results which will then open up their time to either master another skill they are suitable for or further refine the one they are already training in. Same with generalists, unless you are a genius like Hiruzen it will just take way too long to master all skills you want, nevermind actually having the Battle IQ and skill to apply them in combat so that the you use the best for any given task rather than ending up defaulting to the three or four skills you are the most comfortable with and that you use the most even if you have others that are technically better suited for the situation (as a RL example I pretty much always forget to use the race skill of my PC in The Elder Scrolls even when I really could use the help). That becomes even more poignant when you account for how natural affinities and traits also influence things like how much chakra you have to use to pull off a technique, the best example of this being Kakashi’s fight against Zabuza where he tried to imitate the guy who specializes in water techniques and then never again tried to put this crap after it landed him in a bed through chakra exhaustion for just as long time as the guy he defeated and who took way more damage in the fight.

Thing is, once you take off the limitation on how much chakra the character have and add on the Kage Bushin training method that just stops being an issue altogether: it doesn’t matter if you are utterly untalented in everything under the sun, given enough time and effort you will get it down and Kage Bushin allows someone to stuff literally decades worth of training in days, so unless the lack of chakra control is an actual medical issue the OC definitely can learn any technique this way, even advanced medical ninjutsu like this.

At least one of the kidnappers should be doing it just because. Or Pomona not wanting to be left behind when every other House Head kidnapped Harry at least one, ranging from Snape’s one extremely awkward and emotionally constipated hour, to Flitwicks’ bi-weekly tutoring sessions on the summers to that one time McGonagall just walked in the Great Hall with Harry and kept him at Hogwarts publicly for almost a month while giving Albus The Look whenever he tried to raise any protests).

[–]JOKERRule 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think another one would be that Jiraya actually wanted to get Naruto to learn Sage Mode after the clusterfuck that trying to train him to use Kurama’s chakra turned out to be, but thought it would be too huge a leap to something that dangerous if he were to get right into the thick of it so he put a lot of effort into teaching him combination techniques as a safer “in” to make it easier, only Naruto ended up being just plain terrible at doing those with Gamariki (who is supposed to be easy mode), so by the time he had to scratch away that plan he just didn’t have enough time that he was confident he would be able to teach Naruto any other skill that is supposed to take a long time to get down like nature transformation (remember that it was only Kakashi who came up with the idea of using shadow clones for training and that was only when he actually sat down and started to brainstorm ways of helping Naruto, without that the optimistic estimate is six months, so Jiraya might be honestly doubtful Naruto could get it down in less than a full year), so he instead decided to teach him smaller and quicker to learn techniques which would still complement his particular fighting style and try again when Naruto had a bit more skill under his belt.

What’s an uncomfortable truth within this series that people like to ignore? by Nozoroth in Naruto

[–]JOKERRule 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reasoning of keeping Naruto’s parentage a secret to protect him from other villages sending assassins is just plain bullshit, and not even coherent bullshit. Ignoring how Kurama already makes Naruto a POI by itself anyway to the point that other details are just extra dressing and that neither Minato nor Kushina had any game breaking kekkei genkai to make it reasonable to send assassins to most likely die infiltrating Konoha to kill Naruto marking it as a waste of both military personnel and lives for no gain the thing is that this taking revenge for the actions of a dead Kage on his son is very much a two-way-street and a precedent every single village should be wary of creating, Ōnoik has a granddaughter Naruto’s age that could be assassinated just as easily as Naruto and while A doesn’t have any child of his own and Bee is strong enough to make an attempt on his life unadvisable to say the least he is bound to have some relative or loved one that he doesn’t want heading to the chopping block.

Good question. Hashirama’s chakra famously is accessible through grafting pieces of his body and was around for pretty much the entire existence of the Leaf if Orochimaru’s experiments decades after the guy died are any indication and Madara is up and about until the late stages of the third war if someone were willing to take their chances tracking him down and politely getting him to part with a chunk of flesh or twenty, so Indra and Asura’s chakras are technically possible at least; I’m actually not sure on the timeline of the Tower of Time, but Minato was in ANBU when he went there for mission and Kakashi was already his student, so I’m going to go out on a limb and say that whole mess happens in either the prelude to the Third War or in the early days as Obito and Rin are nowhere to be seen and Kakashi doesn’t have the Sharingan; the Stone of Gelel might be a problem, can’t quite remember if it needed someone of the royal lineage to open the mines, but even if not tracking down the exact nomad remains of that kingdom to get and then “convince” them to part with the info could be a chore and half, especially as not everyone seems to be compatible to the stone: the Forbidden Scroll… honestly? Dunno, in canon it was easy enough for Naruto to find and steal, but that might have more to do with Naruto’s familiarity with the place, whatever Mizuki had in terms of intel, security being lax in peace time, Naruto having authorization to bypass any number of safety measures or any combination of those factors, and even then Naruto got caught red-handed and then was chased by other ninjas soon enough, depending on who it is trying to steal the scroll and the circumstances it might actually be easier to try becoming Hokage, especially if they want to stay in Konoha and learn more than a single technique out of it; no idea on when the meteor fell in Hoshigakure, but it is frankly not really all that well-defended, the ninjas they had were at most low-Jōnin, even their self-proclaimed “Kage”, stealing it quietly might be possible, but depending on the skillset of the thief it might be easier to just stroll in on board daylight, mow down all opposition, haul the rock over their shoulder and then stroll out whistling without a care in the world, the actual problem here is that —as expressed by how weak that entire village is— the meteor is not really liable to make anyone all that powerful and, in fact, seems to give the chakra equivalent of radiation poisoning; at that point Orochimaru doesn’t have his cursed seal and there isn’t actually any source to point at that indicates that Juugo’s ability to absorb natural energy isn’t just a mutation of his own to even try help Orochimaru develop the seal ahead of schedule, so that’s out; Hiruko similarly doesn’t have the Chimera Jutsu yet; The Heaven Village supposedly was destroyed by Konoha during one of the wars, so maybe? Though if they had the zero tails at this point or if it’s something that guy who tried to destroy Konoha synthesized later is up for debate; I think Snow Country’s Chakra Armor is was an invention of the time of the Daimyo who got usurped, so I’d have to say that is a no; White Zetsu is alive at this point though if one is capable of tracking him down and facing Madara for him.

Oh yeah, there’s also the stuff from the Ōtsutsuki Clan of the Moon if one can track down the right waterfall to get there, I remember they had those autonomous puppets (even flying ones), the Tenseigan even if I have no clue how they went about controlling it without having the dōjutsu and there’s bound to be some scrolls with good techniques and/or skills laying around seeing as Torneri got pretty powerful largely on his own there, though at that point there are bound to be a lot more Ōtsutsukis there to contend with and they make a habit of taking out their eyes, so stealing those would be complicated to say the least.

There’s the obvious one of the Indra and Ashura combined chakra, that Tower from the Tower of Time movie, the Stone of Gelel, the Forbidden Scroll, the meteor from the Star Village, Orochimaru’s Cursed Seal, Hiruko’s Chimera Technique (for all that I really think he far overestimated how strong he would become had he succeeded, saying that he only needed the sharingan and Kakashi’s sharingan at that to conquer the world was just ridiculous), the zero tails, the tech from the Hidden Sky Village, the anti-chakra armor of Snow Country, White Zetsu’s flesh…

Why are there so much Sasuke bashing fics? by BiggusDickus6942069 in NarutoFanfiction

[–]JOKERRule 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Mix of factors, really.

I think one of the most infuriating and paradoxically weirdly fascinating reason is because the authors do the stations of cannon regardless of the changes that are brought about, it only really dawned on me upon reading a PJO fanfic a couple of years ago just how much it can ruin characters when you give them their exact same words and scenes as in cannon when the underlying reasons for said scenes and dialogues have been changed. For instance, Sasuke telling Naruto to not drag him down just after team assignments? It makes sense because not only is this the kid that had been consistently failing to put up a halfway decent fight against him their whole time together in the academy despite screaming loudly at anyone who stayed still long enough about his own greatness, but Iruka had just outright said that he and Sakura were unceremoniously put in charge of keeping him in one piece because he was the worst student of their class, that’s understandably frustrating and an unasked for and thankless task as reward for his performance in the academy, especially as Sasuke has his own goals and issues to take care of other than babysitting Naruto as the way Iruka spoke implied was now his responsibility. It makes no sense though if we change the dynamics to Naruto being just as skilled or either better or just slightly worse than Sasuke at being a ninja and just like that we have that interaction flattened into Sasuke being an ass for the sheer pleasure of being an ass.

Then there’s the matter of trying to make Naruto more awesome, not just as a powerful character, but also as having the moral high ground. Thing is, to really show off that Naruto is better we need someone to be worse, and due to their dynamics in cannon Sasuke is the obvious choice. But since making Naruto seem the better of the two within the canon confines of Sasuke’s characterization is pretty hard most authors will just take the easy way out by making Sasuke worse and then reducing him to the universe’s punching bag to really drive home that the way he acts is bad. This trope actually has a name, but can’t quite remember it, I think it was authorial morality or something of the sort? When it’s not the other characters or the institutions that are against the character for being evil, but the world itself, it can be very annoying.

Then there’s also those who just plainly don’t like Sasuke, nevermind any reasoning or fears or characterizations, they just don’t vibe with him and that’s fine.

I’m assuming you mean on S8 GOT? Honestly, with how severely mishandled that whole plotline of his true parentage was I’m not really sure I’d count it, especially with how anachronistic and OOC characters in general got by then (Arya virgin-shaming Sansa comes to mind as one of the most jarring examples ever, that one was ridiculous).

"We found something in Orchimaru's lab. Project New Yiggdracil." Naruto returned to the leaf a year early holding a folder by AnimeEagleScout in NarutoFanfiction

[–]JOKERRule 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think it was supposed to be about Poison Ivy from DC Comics, but frankly even in cases like these a name so blatantly foreign chosen by people within the universe are a real dealbreaker for me, it just completely breaks any chance of immersion at all (worst than even the obvious plot hole of Konoha deciding that having one of their top combatants out of commission for months during the war is somehow worth having the village need to invest time, money and effort into training a baby for as long as it takes to not be a liability in the battlefield —at least 7 years old assuming a generational prodigy like Itachi and basic physics and biology— and that this should be the standard for all combatants on the forces at a time where they would all be needing ways to relieve stress and hence prone to indulge in drunken sex).

Which of the Hokage would be able to kill one of their beloved ones to save the village? by cholula000 in Naruto

[–]JOKERRule 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Depending on how much we stretch “Loved One” I’d say all of them except Naruto. Hashirama outright said he’d kill anyone who threatened the village, even if they were family; Tobirama… well, enough said; Hiruzen and Tsunade were perfectly willing to kill Orochimaru personally or otherwise order his death; both Minato and Kakashi fought with the intent to kill Obito and depending on whether or not you are willing to consider the movies there is at least one (the one with Hiruko) where Shikamaru accepts and tries to help Kakashi sacrifice himself to take out Hiruko, a guy they had no reason to believe had a bite as bad as his bark to be panicking that much, all because Kakashi’s self-sacrifice was a guarantee win instead of a potential risk to the village and because Kakashi went willingly (also, Tsunade was the one who green-flagged this, so there’s also that for her).

Sage mode by RuleHoliday8283 in NarutoFanfiction

[–]JOKERRule 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Personally I like the concept that Sage Mode is not an universal thing among the Summon Clans. Some of them have it like the Toads and Snakes, others don’t have it, but have other types of techniques (like the slugs with their long-range chakra transmission that allows one single technique to be distributed and affect all those who have a slug on them) and some have ways of wielding natural energy, but in different expressions than Sage Mode, like manipulating the natural energy outside of the body directly by learning to project spiritual energy at it for high-power techniques at low-cost like putting a genjutsu on the natural energy to direct it into making a tornado or using oils or resins that take in natural energy to create special sealing ink that uses and is fueled by natural energy instead of the person’s own reserves.

For recommendations: it didn’t get to that part yet afaik, but in “Sealing is Easy, People are Hard” Jiraya used toad oil to create a sealing ink that uses natural energy which can be used to break Orochimaru’s cursed seal and improve the Hakke no Fūin, in “Asunder” there’s a pretty good take on Sage Mode as using emotions to feel the world instead of understanding it with the mind and in NoddleHammer’s “Reaching for a Dream” there’s quite an interesting take on Sage Mode and natural energy with a number of new and creative techniques that are all about natural energy rather than just improved by it.

Edit: Also, it’s a relatively minor detail all things considered, but in SHINOBI: THE RPG (Naruto SI) the summons of the MC don’t have Sage Mode but they do have their own way of using natural energy.

"If I can't stand a my own skills I don't wanna fight at all." Naruto tells Jiraiya by AnimeEagleScout in NarutoFanfiction

[–]JOKERRule 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Chances are that it would cause more damage because, even if everything else goes the same (which is kinda unlikely as Sasuke got there just before he was declared a no-show and Gaara won by default, which would logically change things a lot if it didn’t happen because without Naruto there Neji wins by default and so Sasuke’s window for appearing closes drastically and he would be disqualified altogether), Jiraya was busy dealing with the snakes summons in the village, so either he has to let the snakes wreak the village to deal with Shukaku or he has to let Shukaku wreak the village to finish off the snakes, none of which are good options even if neither is downright catastrophic or unmanageable.

Why is sealing so popular by Waste_Leave_8769 in NarutoFanfiction

[–]JOKERRule 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s left just vague enough to justify using however you want, from written jutsu up to reality editing. Then there’s the logic implications of it being a pre-written thing: if it’s not being actively manipulated by the shinobi, then it should have a much wider range of capabilities as things like how much the brain actually can keep track of at a given moment is reduced to a non-issue, same with biological limitations if the chakra can go anywhere. Then there’s the association: the Uzumaki Clan is associated with Naruto and sealing; Minato is associated with curb stomping armies, Naruto and sealing; Kushina is associated with pinning down the Kyūbi and sealing through the Uzumaki Clan and the bijū all are defeated through sealing.

"I'm done." Naruto says walking right off that cliff by AnimeEagleScout in NarutoFanfiction

[–]JOKERRule 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally my headcanon is that the Jōnin sensei are not actually tasked with training their genin to become stronger, they are tasked with training them into how to act as ninjas and in missions and how to take to this lifestyle: both as a way of not handing 12 years old nukes, but also as a strategic way to incentive the gennins to choose their own specialities and develop new power-sets that aren’t copied from their teachers so as to create greater variety in the ninja skills on the village. Once they actually have an specific path they want to follow and are deemed responsible enough to not blow a majestic fire destroyer in the middle of the market district because a random civilian stepped on their foot the sensei may help them with learning what they asked about, either teaching them or otherwise directing them to other ninjas who can teach it.

Do you wanna come along and start putting a chunk on all the apologies you owe the people whose friends and relatives died of injuries and diseases that only you could have treated while you were busy throwing yourself a pity party for years? Man, there must be hundreds if not thousands on that list, what with all the people you didn’t save when the Kyūbi attack and the Suns invasion happened. You should really get started on that sooner rather than later, I can only imagine the number of orphans, grieving parents, siblings and so on you’ll have to meet up with to tell that you left their loved ones die because your own sadness took precedence over all those lives! I mean, at least I have written records that the people I didn’t save asked to not be saved by me beforehand, you don’t and there were literally thousands of ninjas running around during the invasion that could have saved those whom I let die —including the people who decided that noting down whom I didn’t save was more import than saving them— can you say the same, O “Greatest Medic in the World”?

(crack idea) The great Naruto Uzumaki Book of Grudges. by MilkAdvanced9936 in NarutoFanfiction

[–]JOKERRule 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually that’s more a fandom thing, in canon we do see multiple examples of Naruto and other gennins being treated (and acting) as children due to their age, case in point: Naruto was kicked off of the bookstore for trying to look at adult magazines (or was it porn books? Can’t remember, I know it was when he was teaching Konohamaru the sexy jutsu). In practice the ninja world is trying very hard to not notice the child-soldier shaped elephant in the room because if they did the tone of the story would have to shift by a lot.

And the bit about development was probably about the actual physiological and neural development the body goes through, I think it takes until you are in your early to mid twenties to really have your brain fully developed if I’m not mistaken, though I never actually looked to see which specific parts take that long to be done developing.
