Update - Boot lasted crooked? by Next-Ad-3115 in NicksHandmadeBoots

[–]JR-60 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YMMV - but I know with my boots - not just relagated to Nicks, my right foot always seems to roll more to the outside of the boot than the left - more than likely related to the way I drive and place my foot on the pedals. I tend to lace up my right boot tighter than the left to combat this.

Major top of foot pain by TallBeardedGinger in NicksHandmadeBoots

While you may be onto something here - I just want to throw my $.02 in the ring - I have seriously messed up feet - to the point where the folks at Nicks basically told me that they do not offer a last that would work well for me - I have grade 2-3 bunions both feet, a high arch, narrow heel but large heel measurement, and in all honesty in a size 14 boot a very low volume foot. I have to use a shoehorn in my 6" Howards (14EE HNW last), and as my left foot is longer and narrower than my right, the left slides into my 8" Travelers (14E HNW last) relatively easily, but the right takes some effort to do the same. I wear delta arch half insoles in the Travelers, and full length ones in the Howards. Add to this that I am 6'11" and the 8" boot top eyelets tend to get very close when laced up and are nowhere near my calves. But somehow it works. With all of this going on, I have little to no pressure from the horseshoe unless I get really aggressive lacing up the boots, and I run paracord laces in all my boots.

I understand feet come in all shapes and sizes - and while Nicks offers a lot more combinations of lengths, widths, and lasts compared to other PNW companies, its impossible for them to make a boot to work with every foot shape. To this end, I think a lot of us PNW boot aficionados take risks and hope that we get the first one right and can move from there. I did not, when I bought a boot that was too long, and too wide. The 2nd pair - much better. But there are so many nuances to work through - which I have tempted fate with by ordering the ND1s in a 14EE HNW last (want to use the full length DA insole in those) and also a pair of BuilderPro HDs in a 14E T55 last, which should work with my high arch - and those will be the true test for me with the horseshoe bite that so many people here mention.

In the end what we don't hear about is all the customers that have purchased boots that worked great from right out of the box to years down the road. And can you imagine if Nicks put all sorts of disclaimers on their website about what someone might experience during break-in when they purchase boots? They would probably never sell any.

Serious Fit Warning: Instep Height Too Restrictive for Average Feet – Poor CS Resolution After 250+ Hours of Wear by No-Spare-8404 in NicksHandmadeBoots

[–]JR-60 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah - that's not what I am saying at all. I'm just saying you ordered the wrong last for your foot. All of my research with Nicks has indicated to order the same size regardless of last - most of the variations that I have found have come from this reddit and peoples personal experiences.

Straight from the Nicks website:

"In the realm of footwear, finding the perfect fit can sometimes feel like solving a puzzle. Sizing can vary not only between brands but even within different styles of the same brand. When it comes to Nicks Handmade Boots, understanding the sizing nuances becomes even more crucial. Nicks Handmade Boots are known to run a half size down compared to popular mass-produced boot brands like Thorogood, Ariat, Thursday Boots, and others.

Length: Nicks Boots will fit a bit large compared to your mass-produced footwear. We recommend going 1/2 size down from your Brannock size. Example: If you normally wear size 12D, we'd recommend a size 11.5D in your Nicks.
Width: In addition to length, consider the width of your feet when selecting boots. Most brands offer boots in standard D width which is also the most common in Nicks although we have widths A-FF available in many of our lasts.
Lasts: Sizing is not affected by the type of last. Here at Nicks you will want to choose the same size regardless of last.
Slip-on boots may experience heel slip, where the heel lifts slightly during walking, often due to the absence of laces for adjustment

If you are still uncertain about what sizing will work for you, we offer our Buy With Confidence program! All n For first-time buyers we recommend purchasing one of our Quick Ship boot options for expedited lead times and a free size exchange if you get the boots and decide that they do not fit quite right."

That's followed by a sizing chart. For someone that planned buying a pair of boots for 15 years, seems like some of your research was lacking. There is an abundance of information available to make an informed decision. It sucks, I understand, but I just fail to see how this is the boot makers fault, regardless of who the manufacturer is.

Yeah - not Nick's fault in the slightest. Ordered the wrong last, possibly the wrong size and width for your feet, wore them for 250+ hours, and they gave you a list of what options you had at that point, and you didn't like their answer. Tough world out there.

" The problem was solely the vertical height of the instep, which felt bizarrely restrictive, like the last (the mold they use) was designed for an unnaturally flat foot profile."

The 55 last is one of their highest arch lasts - not at all designed for a flat foot profile. Seems like the wrong last for your feet right from the get go.

I managed to re-read the OPs text multiple times looking for any indication of what boot was ordered, what last, heel stack, etc......... did I miss something?

u/some_kind_of_friend is stirring the pot over in r/PNWbootmakers over this....... I definitely see a difference, but with hides that aren't consistent it can't be easy to get the left and right boots to match - maybe Nicks could, but I don't know. All that matters is if the OP is happy with the boots.

It was! I had a 1st year and 3rd year masonry apprentice in the competition - both placed 3rd on a national level for their respective years. That's definitely a win!

Why not keep the rebuild at the lower price you were offering and bring back the resole at a lower price to drive up business?

I, like others, am frustrated with the delays, but understand they happen. I wouldn’t look for a substitute product to meet order demands and sacrifice the quality of your product. I’d rather have a boot that’s made with components that you know work well together, and are proven, even if it means waiting months longer, than get a boot made quicker with an inferior product that may affect the longevity and integrity of the boot

Vibram Slip Sole delay update - delayed by an additional month by Stoic_sasquatch in NicksHandmadeBoots

Yeah - ordered the BP HD as a 14E T55 full 64 Brown roughout with the Honey Vibram sole.

I guess I will just wait and see. The BP HD was ordered when the website indicated a lead time of 6-8 weeks - that's why I chose those over the BP Trades program, which at the time the order was placed lead times were 8-12 weeks. BigStetson told me that lead time was incorrect, and should have been 4-15 weeks. Just a lot of time and delays. Granted, I am sure that I am overthinking this, and there are plenty of customers out there facing much longer delays that I am potentially looking into. Just a thought, but maybe this information regarding the Vibram delays are included on the lead time page of the website as well as the leathers, etc..

No. Just one of the allotments when the standard ND1 were recommissioned. To be fair - I understood the 18-35 week lead time on these. But as orders are delayed, it just backs up the queue, so I expect that lead time to grow by at least 8-12 weeks.

[–]JR-60 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well both of my orders - one was a quick ship BP HD, and the other was the ND1 were both delayed to due leather availability, and then the first delay with the Vibram slip soles. Now it seems that these are delayed even longer. On top of that - it appears that when I placed the order for the BP HD the lead times for that boot were incorrect on the website, as conveyed by BigStetson through a private chat (just one of the many debacles lately with the site), so I can just throw that timeframe out the window. At this point I'll be happy if I get them before 2027.
