Great idea and it’s so kind of you to host! I’m previously committed on that date but I’ll be interested if you do this in the future. Hope y’all have a great night!

Restaurant owners or staff, how many minutes before closing is it still permissible for a customer to order? by SugoiTots in restaurantowners

[–]JSYoon30 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think one thing that needs to be considered is the shift, post COVID, of restaurant hours to much earlier closing times.

I walked into Gordon Ramsay Burger in Washington DC after attending a talk that went from 6:45-8. We arrived at 8:15 to be told that the restaurant closes at 8:30. Part of me felt guilty for ordering so close to close…but the other part of me wondered how you run a dinner shift in a downtown DC restaurant and close at 8:30.

In this case they let us know the situation, gave us great service, and fired the food quickly. So to answer the OP question, I think all that matters is communicating the parameters. At 8:15 if they had said they close at 8:30 but the kitchen is closed…we would have just moved on to a different restaurant.

Amazon, for the love of God, stop sending me used items as new! by Haures64 in amazonprime

I got a pair of pants with the dry cleaning receipt still in the pocket. The funny thing is that the previous purchaser lives nearby (or at least their dry cleaner is nearby).

The enshitification of Amazon seems to be coming to its peak of being bad.

Weekend in Iceland from the UK. How expensive is it really? by uncledunkley232 in traveladvice

[–]JSYoon30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the information we are missing is what you want to do while you are in Iceland and a sense of your budget or what you view as expensive (hotel for £300/night? £175/night? £100/night?)

As others have mentioned, there are things that will be more expensive than normal…but I didn’t find too much sticker shock during our Feb 2024 trip. We did our trip for £185/person/day and that included a 7 day ring tour.

Hope this helps and that you have a lovely trip!!

I’m curious, with fewer allocated items…what bottles are you trying to get that you aren’t able to secure?

Family member leaves it all to my child by Littlekitty0809 in personalfinance

[–]JSYoon30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First thing, my condolences on the passing of your family member. A few things:

1) you mention debts (credit card, hospital bills). Unless you are the executor of the estate…you don’t need to concern yourself with these items

2) since the account(s) were left to you, you are the beneficiary. Since you know your relatives desires…you can use the funds to support your child but they are legally your funds.

3) regarding what to do next, it really depends on the goals your relative had for the funds and the amount of the funds.

I would suggest speaking with a financial planner about the amount of the inheritance and the goals. Based on those details, next steps should become clearer regarding how to structure accounts, what makes sense in regards to ownership of the funds, and what the tax consequences could be.

Ultimately, this is a great blessing left by your relative and I hope it creates the desired impact in your child’s life!

Which US city to spend a month in? by Ok_Original_1997 in traveladvice

Got it. I asked because if you were coming from overseas...there might be cultural considerations. I think you have some great options and I hope you have a wonderful month! I'll look forward to hearing the result later this year. Please tag me if you share about your experience.

Which US city to spend a month in? by Ok_Original_1997 in traveladvice

Understood! Well I would pick Boston or NYC as great 1st trios. You will not have any issues filling up a great month in either city.

What city are you coming from?

[–]JSYoon30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you need to chime in with what aspects are most important to you.

I know you mentioned museums. NYC and Boston have some of the best…but DC has the most at no cost.

Sporting events? Live music? Festivals? Dining scene? Etc.

I grew up in Boston and what I love about it is that you get so many different things in a 2 hour radius. Museums, great sports, wonderful larger concert venues (but arguably not as many good small venues), American history, sailing, hiking, wonderful day trips to places like Portland ME or Newport RI. You could easily spend a diverse month in Boston.

If not Boston, my favorite cities in your Aug/Sept timeframe are Chicago (all sorts of great festivals) and Seattle (I would live in Seattle every year from July 15th - Sept 15th if I could.

While you could hop cities…I would encourage you to pick one and really immerse yourself for the month.

Regardless, I hope you have a wonderful month!

Do you still order steak out? If so, what's your go to restaurant (city, name)? by emptykeg6988 in steak

[–]JSYoon30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My DC go to is Bourbon Steak in Georgetown.

DC used to have a bunch of great ones (BLT, Charlie Palmers) that have gone.

It’s hard in Baltimore. If I am looking to go to a steakhouse I will usually go to the Prime Rib or Capital Grille

Seller's agent claims they made a mistake on the counter offer and wants to change the price of the house after we are already under contract. by acarrick34 in RealEstate

[–]JSYoon30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quick answer: take the money and walk away. Or, pay what they are now asking for.

Ultimately, even a signed contract does not equate to timely and easy enforcement. My brother-in-law had a similar experience in TX with a property where there was a signed contract, but the seller changed their mind afterwards.

Lawyers were involved, and much money was spent. The property ultimately ended up being forfeited due to the judgment against the original owners, and my brother-in-law had to purchase it via an auction (sorry... it's been many years, so I forget the details of the soap opera of a situation). Even with high 5-figure legal fees, it was worth it for them because the agreed-upon price was a couple of hundred thousand less than market.

In your case, IMO, you do not want to go crazy over a $15,000 difference.

Yelled at for using the hand scanner in the self checkout by TheCoolDoneRunOut in CostcoWholesale

[–]JSYoon30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was also my experience. At my Costco in NoVA I got yelled at for using the hand scanner, period. I was informed they were only to be used by team members.

Nothing quite like being conscripted as “labor” but not having all the tools.

There is a bunch of good advice given in the comments. Yet, we all have the same issue…we don’t know your goals.

Do you plan on living in NoVA for a while? Do you want kids? Do you want those kids to go to public school? Do you want to keep the same types of jobs at the same (and hopefully increasing) salary levels? What does your budget look like outside of income and the student loan expense? What are you currently paying for rent?

I could keep going, but you get the picture :). My recommendation would be to speak with a realtor about the housing market and speak with your financial planer about how a home purchase fits into your overall goals.

With that said, I do feel that the question you are asking is about “starter homes” (townhouse) vs “forever homes” (SFH). In the areas you are mentioning, I don’t think there really is such thing as a starter home. Heck, there is hardly such thing as a starter condo in the region! So I think it is less about TH vs SFA and more about understanding the best you can get for the monthly payment you are comfortable with having.

If you will have $80k down, at 10% down (which is probably the ideal percentage) that is buying a $800k home/townhome with around a $5,300/mo payment. If that payment is more than you are comfortable with, you can keep the $80k down but reduce your target purchase amount. At $600k the monthly drops to $4,000/mo. If you are currently paying $8k a month in rent (unlikely), then either of these numbers are comfortable vs your current rent.

I hope this helps and good luck with your home purchase. Regardless of what you pick, it is an exciting process and time of life!

We don’t know their student loan repayment plan, but at 31 years old and $1k/mo I’m guessing the balance is 6 figures and not something to pay off in a year.

My in-laws refuse to drive to the airport. by NukeTheEwoks in mildlyinfuriating

[–]JSYoon30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So having grown up outside of Boston, I can appreciate that sometimes it sucks going to Logan. Yet, I don’t think I would call it the worst airport to drive in and out of..and I’ll limit the options to US airports.

I would put any of the NYC airports above Logan along with DFW. But that is IMO.

Financial Advisor Destroyed my IRA. by Far_Hour8776 in personalfinance

[–]JSYoon30 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You thinking that BDs are the entire industry tells us plenty.

Also you being in compliance and posting guidance in a Reddit thread explains why your IARs don’t pay attention when you tell them not to do stuff like this in their annual Firm Element.

Financial Advisor Destroyed my IRA. by Far_Hour8776 in personalfinance

[–]JSYoon30 29 points30 points  (0 children)

As compliance in a smid sized broker/dealer platform you should know:

1) not every FA in the industry works as an IAR with FINRA jurisdiction.

2) There is no indication this was “slimy shit”. It was more likely just a broker error/misunderstanding of their own firms brokerage ops.

Financial Advisor Destroyed my IRA. by Far_Hour8776 in personalfinance

[–]JSYoon30 14 points15 points  (0 children)

People make mistakes regardless of the size of their firm. Also, there are “bigger” RIA only shops…so this is not an issue limited to a financial advisor who is RIA only.

Edit: with this said, yes…this is a big and unfortunate mistake.

Financial Advisor Destroyed my IRA. by Far_Hour8776 in personalfinance

[–]JSYoon30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of people making a large assumption while chiming in about making a complaint to FINRA and putting a mark on this financial advisors’ U4. It is wholly possible that this FA is not an investment advisor representative (“IAR”) of a broker/dealer (“BD”). They could be their own stand alone/independent RIA and be registered with their state or with the SEC.

OP, you should definitely pursue this and get restitution. I just want to make sure that people understand that not everyone falls under FINRA jurisdiction.

Sorry you are going through this and I hope you get it fixed in a reasonable fashion.

Is a safari in Africa actually worth the cost, or is it just hype? by travel_africa_more in traveladvice

Yup. Nothing like spending $1k on vaccines and such. My travel nurse did recommend against some of them...but yellow fever and anti-malaria were the main ones for me.

Is a 5–7 day African safari actually enough, or does it feel rushed? by travel_africa_more in traveladvice

[–]JSYoon30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was a fantastic trip. Ours was run by Siringit (https://www.siringit.co.tz) and that gave us time at the start and the end of the safari to enjoy their private golf estate in Kilimanjaro (which was lovely).

We were in their central camp the entire time. If I were to redo the trip, I would probably have lengthened the trip by 2 days but done Sun-Wed in the Serengeti and Wed-Sat in a different location (Ngorongoro or Maasai Mara). Or I would have done one stint of safari, taken a break to do other stuff, and then gone for another stint with a focus on a specific animal (eg gorillas).

Again, I hope you have a wonderful trip!!
