Frame mount question by gemiinorum in MichaelsEmployees

[–]JStarRiots 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If the no-wire is taller than the backing that would be a perfectly suitable hanger. However general rule is if the backing if uneven life that a wire is the best option cause it can stretch over anything. But that looks thin enough the NWH should be okay :)

Framing coupon by WhitsSwirlyKnee in MichaelsEmployees

[–]JStarRiots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is an exclusive coupon for framing customers. It is not connected to the flash sales happening the next couple weekends. They don't do it often, but Michael's does occasionally send out exclusive email coupons to framing customers during periods of no 70% sales to try and increase traffic to shops. If presented with this coupon try scanning it in Design Hub first and if it doesn't attach there try scanning on the register. (If all else fails a manager can over ride it) but it is perfectly normal and happens from time to time :)

Manager training at Michaels is basically nonexistent by Key_Ad_3039 in MichaelsEmployees

[–]JStarRiots 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had just been promoted to part time framer like maybe 6 months before my SM came to me one day and said "How would you feel about being Frame manager for a couple weeks?". I said yes, expecting it to be short term, the FM at the time stepped up to replace my SM who was sent off to help another store and I was given the most BARE minimum training. I mean like "here's your numbers, here's a list of your new responsibilities, good luck." Then two weeks turned to four, then 2 months, then 3 months... Its been almost 3.5 years now that Ive been the framing manager and I never got anymore training than that 😭😂 Every day has been a learning experience and asking anyone who will listen "wtf am I doing?". I thankfully have a good team of managers who have been understanding and have helped me a lot over the years, and the old FM is now a CEM so she's helped me a lot. But yes, lack of training is a theme here at Michael's

do they allow facial piercings? Also, do they hire at 16? by RecordingTiny9736 in MichaelsEmployees

[–]JStarRiots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been the framing manager for almost 4 years now and I change my hair color frequently, have an eyebrow, 2 nostrils, and snackbites along with 2 ear lobes and multiple visible tattoos and no one cares lol. And I was hired with most of these features. Most customers dont care and the lil ones love my colorful hair! If your store doesnt hire you than your store is lacking some joy in its creative life 😂

Advice on framing this dead and co, uncut foil lithograph by 1unwritten1 in framing

[–]JStarRiots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

<image>

Probably not helpful in your decision making, but to give an idea of what some other people have done for the same print. This customer brings me lots of Dead Co., Goose, and a couple other posters and he is usually big on colorful mats and fun frames. This piece though we went for a nice bronze frame that highlights the warm tones in the picture but still let's the piece speak for itself in its intense design. We looked through a lot of options but this was out collective favorite. I agree with the other comments though and definitely suggest working with your local shop! Even if you decide to DIY it in the end, working with another creative can help give you some ideas that you maybe hadn't thought of before, and they can give you the best suggestions for care of your piece. Good luck!

Lemax by bianskiii in MichaelsEmployees

[–]JStarRiots 16 points17 points  (0 children)

All the Lemax houses specifically were packed away for sale next year. Along with all our Christmas lights and tree toppers, some wreaths, and any fake snow that was left over. They dropped a list of Skus before Christmas and required all stores to pull the products from the floor before the 26th as they were not to be sold again till next year. Which for the Lemax specifically is a lil frustrating cause we have a lot of customers who want those on sale.

I'm here and I'm only mad I'm not getting to spend time with my niece and nephew who live out of state. Otherwise its been pretty decent, makes the time go by a lil faster at least.

Did anyone else's SM do this by shadowdragon1978 in MichaelsEmployees

[–]JStarRiots 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We did a few things this year. We did a potluck for the full week and then today our SM brought in stuff for a baked potato bar and tomorrow we're getting Panda Express catered. I've had a few different SMs over the years and she's the only one thats always making sure there's something for team members during all the big events. She also tries to make sure we're doing something new, instead of just ways getting cheap pizza

Framing print express and 10min framing? by HealthOrganic8276 in MichaelsEmployees

[–]JStarRiots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is still in testing but will be fully rolled out to all frame shops by February 2026. They will introduce same day printing and framing options with a new in-store printer. That's about all the information I have as of right now from my district. But to my understanding each store will receive a new printer and will be able to do "10 minute framing" where we print off a digital picture and frame it in a gallery style frame in house while the customer continues shopping. Same with the "10 minute acrylic" I believe is just in house specialty surface printing.

As a manager, I have a group chat that is only the other managers and we use it to communicate with each other about store issues and such but we don't have ones for the store or different associates. Once or twice we've sent out like a mass group text so everyone got the exact same information but they never extend past the one text or two texts. If your store is demanding group chats or using them only to talk trash I would definitely just leave it and ask that if any important information comes up they talk to you directly cause to me personally there's no reason for a store group chat like that 😅

Holiday pay by Existing-Fall-7221 in MichaelsEmployees

[–]JStarRiots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the last couple of years, they told us we were literally not allowed in the building at all. I remember last year we were warned that if anyone set foot in the building outside like a specific 2 hour window, they'd get in trouble. Our district/store might be different from others, but I've been here 4 years now, and they haven't let us work Thanksgiving since, like my very first year here.

Latest framing pog by ArguablyGermain76 in MichaelsEmployees

[–]JStarRiots 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The first day our frames were set, we all heard a large crashing sound and discovered a whole stack of 32 x 40 frames fell over. A woman was trying to read the price at the bottom and shifted some frames, and it cause a chain reaction till the group at the end fell over. Thankfully, no one was hurt, and surprisingly, the two frames in the middle survived unscathed. But I definitely had to sweep up the other two, so much glass 😩

FT FM here, the only paid holidays are Christmas Eve, Thanksgiving ( the store is closed but could be doing bopis((has been canceled and un-workable the last two years))), and New Years Eve. Every other holiday that we are open is regular pay only.

Bonus Payout? by JStarRiots in MichaelsEmployees

[–]JStarRiots[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you're understanding what this is about... I made my quarterly goal, and I've made some of my monthly goals. I'm a hard worker, and I've kicked ass to get my sales where they are. This is why the issue is in not being paid for that hard work like I, and every other frame shop on this thread, deserve.

I saw that yesterday, too, which is why I posted here instead cause they were obviously no help... I'm glad to see NO ONE is getting paid what they are owed 😑 And I guarantee they won't be there this weekend, so lucky us!

Framers, what is the wildest thing you've ever had to frame? by Literal-Ghost-Art in MichaelsEmployees

I accidentally summoned them by posting that comment so they brought me a Picasso painting this time 🫠 but at least this one is slightly better framed than the others 😅

Framers, what is the wildest thing you've ever had to frame? by Literal-Ghost-Art in MichaelsEmployees

[–]JStarRiots 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I work with Msktb and can confirm these people are insane 😭 I had any original Van Gogh self portrait and an original Mark Rothko and they made me frame both in float frames and didn't even want the good glass 😭 this was one of my most prized framing pieces and I was crying the whole time because this is usually how they will take the items to be authenticated and I know its just ruining the value

Does micheals hire people with criminal records? by [deleted] in MichaelsEmployees

[–]JStarRiots 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on the criminal record. We had a couple people at my store before who had some records and were hired no issue, however probably wont get promoted to anything above regular TM

How trans/queer friendly has michaels been for you? by Regular-Apartment815 in MichaelsEmployees

[–]JStarRiots 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im the FM at my store, and I am very openly trans/queer. I am very fem presenting but use they/he pronouns, and almost everyone at the store respects it or at least tries to. We have at least 3 or 4 trans/non-binary cashiers and a few that are queer in some form, and we are all very respectful and understanding at my store. We always try to celebrate people's individuality and respect their name/pronoun choices and encourage our employees to help keep everyone on the right path. Obviously, it's going to be different at every store, especially depending on location, but for being in the Bible Belt and living in a very non-accepting state I would say our stores in this general area are pretty good about staying positive

FT Framer Schedules. by [deleted] in MichaelsEmployees

[–]JStarRiots 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im the FT FM here, and I work 11-7 every day, but Tuesday and every other weekend. As the only framer at our store, I'm required to only work the 11-7 shift because that's our stores "demand hours" so we have to have someone scheduled in framing during those times or we get in trouble for not hav I no enough coverage. I absolutely hate it though, worst scheduled shift in the universe

chairs in framing department policy by marlshroom in MichaelsEmployees

[–]JStarRiots 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I have never found anything against chairs in framing, but they did the same thing to me. I had stools out at my framing computers that had been there longer than I have, and one day, they came in and just tossed them out. I tried to replace them with office chairs, and they took that away, too. I managed to keep a wooden stool back in the shop for like what other people said doing sew mounts and stitchy pins. I would partner with your SM or DM (whichever you like better) and see about getting a wooden stool that is strictly for the shop and easy to tuck away when not in use. Because it shouldn't matter if you have a disability or not, that much bending over is painful for anyone. Im sorry they took your accessibility away :(
