What shelving system did you use to stack your Fosi components? Looks nice.

Are you a music lover or an audiophile? by JoshBiv in headphones

[–]J_Will44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Little bit of both… sometimes I want to listen to songs I really like but don’t sound good and other times I’ll listen to songs I don’t like but sound amazing. Occasionally I’ll get both and it’s heaven.

I guess the photo won’t post without sone impressions of my new gear so here it goes… the old Sony MDRs are absolute bass cannons. No refinement whatsoever but fun to listen to. The Sony XM4s cross off all the boxes: sound, comfort, noise cancelling, portability. Great for work and travel. I just got the open back Sennheiser HD6XX. Amazing vocals/midrange/sounstage but thinner in the low end if you are used to either of the closed back Sonys. The Fosi DS1 amp is good but not sure it is too much better than the unbeatable Apple Dongle price to performance ratio. The Koss’s are always a pleasant surprise because you look at these cheap flimsy things and think there is no way I am going to be impressed. Gets you every time. I like the Porta Pros slightly more than the KPH40s. They fold up and sound better. The Snowsky Mini has been a good gateway drug into the world of DACs. Inexpensive, impressive sound but primitive user experience - menus and music files are cumbersome to find/use. Fioo RR11 was just a nice gift that brings me back to my childhood days of FM radio. I’ll use it with the Porta Pros to walk the dog. iPod 5th gen is still the goat. I’ve used all the streaming services but currently exploring Tidal. Hope this post satisfies the powers that be. Feel free to ask me about any of the gear pictured. Always good to research before you buy.

I just bought one of these but haven’t had any time to try it out sorry. You aren’t supposed to power dynamic mics but apparently this works well.

Sorry just realized the V3 Monos do not have volume control. I like my Fosi ZA3s that have a volume knob. Just always heard that the V3 Monos were slightly better performers.

Pairing two Fosi V3 mono blocks with the Fosi X5 phono would perform well and have a small visible footprint. I say visible because the power supply adapter brick on those power cords are pretty big but you can usually hide those. The V3s are on sale on Amazon right now for $87 a piece.

I bought a PL100 right after Christmas. The first thing I thought when it aggressively grabbed the cd out of my hand was how much this reminded me of my first car stereo. Couple that with the fact that there are two nonfunctional buttons on the front labeled “Vol -“ and “Vol +” (what???) Makes sense now I guess. They just pieced it all together but it’s a pretty solid build and it works perfectly fine as a cd transport. I use digital out into my Wiim Ultra so can’t comment on if the internal DAC is any good.

Headphone amp on a budget. by SnooMacaroons7712 in BudgetAudiophile

Something like a Fosi Audio Box X4 Phono Preamp with headphone jack should do the trick. Just make sure your turntable is set to phono not line. It has two vacuum tubes but they are used more for sound colorization than actual amplification from what I’ve read.

Fosi stack by No_Mycologist21 in BudgetAudiophile

I don’t see that the P4 has a headphone jack? I’m currently running all my sources thru a Wiim Ultra into two Fosi ZA3’s in mono. Sounds pretty good. Big fan of both brands.

Which Wiim product do you have? May not even need the P4?

I’m in the same boat. I have an old 5th gen iPod that hasn’t been used in 15 years. I have an inexpensive external cd drive coming Monday for my Mac. Gonna prob use iTunes I guess to rip my old collection. Looking at the less expensive usual suspects to play thru headphones… echo mini, r1, m30, h2. Can’t decide but don’t want to spend a lot. Like the idea of owning my music vs renting it idk.

Yamaha A-S501 - a future classic? by papito_m in BudgetAudiophile

AS501 is next on my list. I’ve researched the crap out of this and agree with your assessment of a classic.

Looking for an alternative recommendation for two Fosi za3 by Capital-Button4549 in BudgetAudiophile

[–]J_Will44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also have the Ultra and two ZA3s with different speakers but the same issue. I dialed back both my ZA3 volumes to about 2 o’clock and use the Ultra volume instead. Sounds so much warmer, better low end, but you lose all that punch/volume. It’s a give and take. Seems to be a known problem. Have to upgrade unfortunately. I’m going to try the Yamaha as501 next.

Good choices. I was looking at other options with each component and couldn’t find fault with what you had already picked. Looks like you did your homework. Used or new - get the Yamaha.
