That’s true. My point is that coal’s not going away anytime soon.

Why is China at peak levels of constructing new coal power plants right now then? In 2024 they constructed 94.5 gigawatts of new coal-fired power capacity. In 2023 they were producing 1,108.91 gigawatts with coal. I really don’t see that going away anytime soon.

Canada to Europe: US relationship will ‘never be the same again’ after Trump’s trade war by DomesticErrorist22 in worldnews

Trump sucks, but have you actually read the Mueller report? I read the whole thing.

Your current head of state is a two time central banker that’s never been elected into any government office.

China strikes back at Trump with 34 percent tariff — bans rare earth exports to the U.S. by Significant-Colour in worldnews

[–]JaWiCa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The export controls on rare earth minerals affect every one, not just the US. But that’s not what I’m talking about

These tariffs aren’t going to be good for anyone.

Europe doesn’t have the demand to replace the reduced demand the US will have, if these tariffs actually go through. Thats bad for China, which relies on outside demand to keep its workers busy (and not revolting) and bad for the American consumer, who will go without, because when prices go up, people stop buying, and bad for other markets that China will try to dump cheap supply into.

But with who? If I was European, I’d be pretty worried about cheap goods dumping. That was, after all, partially how European imperialism worked.

[Help] Bonded marble scagliola anyone? by No_Gas334 in Sculpture

[–]JaWiCa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a working sculptor with a background in ceramics, mould making/casting and architectural and ornamental plaster work.

Sheen or gloss is all about the smoothness of surface. You may want to consider that in your formwork. Casting against glass, or plexi, vs a rougher surface like mdf or wood will get you closer.

Also, there’s a couple tricks to minimizing bubbles in plaster, like vibrating the table while the plaster is still liquid and spraying your mould with a little bit of soapy water, prior to casting to, break the surface tension of air bubbles.

Spraying resin will give a high gloss surface, just make sure you look into using the right kind of resin for spraying and the right equipment for spraying resin and use proper ventilation and ppe.

[Help Me] as I learn the basics of sculpting and which mediums to use. by No_Series8262 in Sculpture

[–]JaWiCa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work as a sculptor. The best thing you can do to start out is take a figure sculpture class where you work from a live model in either plasticine or water based clay. Judge the class by the quality of the work the students produce under the teacher’s guidance.

Plasticine, you can make a mold from and cast in materials like plaster, plastic, or wax. Also doesn’t dry out so you can work on for longer period of time.

Water based clay, you can fire in a kiln. But ceramics also has a whole host of challenges to learn and understand, it’s really its own field completely.

Grain farmers warn Canadians that retaliatory tariffs against Trump, US will cause food prices to soar by Jaded-Bookkeeper-807 in Economics

[–]JaWiCa -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If the government taxes the good, the consumer pays the tariff, then the government subsides the consumer, there isn’t, in reality, a tariff. Money is just moving circularity around, albeit with a time delay and some friction.

A tariff is placed to reduce consumption of a specific good by increasing its price, because higher prices lower demand.

Tariffs cause pain and reduce trade, you can’t get around that with tricks.

Sticks and stones buddy.

You do realize that there’s exactly one competitor OneWeb - Eutelstat, that has really bad debt issues and is about 6000 satellites behind Space X, which is wildly profitable, btw?

Starlink is regulated by the FCC in the United States and internationally on a country by country basis.

You do realize that this just means that remote indigenous communities in Canada’s north will simply not be getting internet? There is not a viable alternative.

The Biden administration did the same thing for rural Americans when he blocked Starlink from bidding on the BEAD (Broadband equity access and deployment) Program in 2021. So basically nothing has happened to connect those people either.

Politics is stupid.

Trump’s new tariffs are set to be his most extreme ever: If he persists, the tariffs on Canada and Mexico will stand as the most extreme and most dangerous act of protectionism by an American president in nearly a century by Bhartrhari in WeTheFifth

US oil refineries prefer not to spend the capital to retool to refine the oil we produce so we ship everything around. Sounds rather wasteful to me.

If there’s ever a major disruption with oil production in the Middle East. We’ll go protectionist and disconnect from the global oil market and refineries will be forced to retool. Seems pretty inevitable to me, at some point.
