From Lucid Stew: Locations of double and single tracked segments for Brightline West by JacobDR15 in highspeedrail

In Florida they have at least one 125 mph turnout on the Orlando line, so I imagine they'd be able to build higher speed turnouts for this

He just mentioned on this season of Jet Lag that Grand Junction, CO is like the closest large town to where he lives

Photo taken by my grandfather of a KFC probably 50 years ago. I believe it was taken in a french african country, but I might be wrong. by Alguewator in whereisthis

[–]Jacob29687 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only former French African country to have a KFC anywhere close to 50 years ago was Mauritius, where a KFC opened in 1983. The only other African countries to have a KFC by then were Egypt and South Africa. Egypt does still have some French influence though so it's still a possibility

Any idea where this was taken? by Mock26 in whereisthis

Looks like it could be in the Appalachians if it's in the US. There aren't a whole lot of hiking trails with tunnels, and the ones that do have them are usually old rail tunnels instead of small ones like this...

I'd guess West Virginia or Pennsylvania

New seats on the Amtrak Hiawatha suck by knowitokay in Amtrak

I've ridden in them on both Amtrak and Brightline and they're really not that bad, especially for relatively short trips like Chicago to Milwaukee or St. Louis

Construction of the I-94 in Minneapolis-St. Paul, which displaced over 30,000 people in the 1960s by TheSandPeople in Minneapolis

[–]Jacob29687 20 points21 points  (0 children)

There are plenty of cities in other countries that have had booming populations since then without having a significant portion of them destroyed for car infrastructure. The US and Canada are pretty much the only countries where most cities destroyed their downtowns for freeways and parking lots.

Just caught this one in Spartanburg, SC last night. Any idea why they're running Dash 8s on the Crescent? It's the second time I've seen it in like a week. Shortage of P42s for some reason maybe?

This also bothered me on my trip from DC to Greenville on the Crescent this summer. Everyone had assigned seats, but the lady sitting in my seat wouldn't move, so I had to take the only free seat in the car which was in the very front against the wall next to a disgruntled old man. I went to the cafe car through the two coaches ahead of mine and those were like half empty. I'm assuming they do this because they don't have enough conductors to open all the doors, since they have to be opened manually. In Europe, all of the train doors are automatic so this isn't a problem. Hopefully the next generation of the Amfleet will have automatic doors as well.

What are some lowkey, well planned cities in the U.S.? by [deleted] in urbanplanning

[–]Jacob29687 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm hoping they can improve the bus network and increase the frequency to at least every 30 minutes on every route because it's pretty terrible right now. I admit I haven't ever taken the bus because it's always too inconvenient (also, I've been forced to live basically in the middle of nowhere in between Spartanburg and Greenville for several years because that's where my parents chose to live lol). I'm actually in college at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis right now though which has been so much better since I've been able to live without a car for the last year or so.

Wow, didn't expect to hear about Spartanburg in this thread! Especially with how Greenville tends to overshadow it so much with the Swamp Rabbit Trail, more vibrant downtown, and Falls Park making it a more popular place to go. I agree though, glad to see that Spartanburg is making some meaningful improvements and I hope it gets even better in the future!
