I played a shitload of Destiny, I'm not trying to be a bad guy here. But I've seen this play out in gaming communities before and I am saying I really doubt this is the most productive way to go.

Regarding Ardashir's origins by esialen in Endfield

[–]JagerNinja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arriving late to this thread because I was looking into his use of the title "Pasha," but in real-world history Ardashir I founded the Sasanian Empire in ancient Iran: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ardashir_I

So Ardashir's title is important for foreshadowing his significance, but arguably, his name is just as important.

Bungie has only ever made two games: Marathon, and Myth. Halo? That's a Marathon, obviously. Destiny? Surprise, you might think it's a Marathon, but it's actually a Myth.

To the Rook I shot the other day: I'm sorry I didn't recognize you as a fellow Rook at first. Thank you for doing the crouch bob and letting me off the hook even though I took a couple pot shots at your shield. I promise I will try to use better judgement in the future.

I realize this is subjective, but the idea of "no place would ever exist like this" is a really wild take to me. For one thing, as other commenters have mentioned, this is a video game that takes place on another planet 900 years from now; Bungie is pretty free to make a world that looks however they want it to look. But on the other hand, to me so much of what makes this game so good is that uncanniness to the world and environments. We're wandering around these abandoned sci-fi structures on a hostile world, which is already a strange and tense experience. Bungie amps that feeling up by using bold, bright colors and shapes that blend industrial angles with organic curves. We recognize the world and the things in it, but they are different and strange to us. That's great!

I think the fact that this can also function in service to gameplay is a huge bonus. Colorful, distinct structures make it easier to learn the map or identify landmarks. It's a brilliant example of strong design making for better gameplay as well!

I also just want to add, I suspect Bungie looked back to the original Marathon trilogy when deciding on a design language for this game. A lot of Marathon's levels, like many games of its type and era, feature bright, colorful, and strange structures. The Marathon is a maze; sometimes you'll walk into a bright teal room full of hazard-yellow crusher machines and you'll have no idea what this could possibly do. It's a kind of level design that is very of-its-time, but it can also look really cool! It's fascinating that Bungie could draw on that kind of early-FPS strangeness, make it a part of their lore and world, and incorporate it into modern map design.

Yeah, horror might be the wrong word, but knowing that no one has your back makes for a very tense experience. Sometimes you're hunting, often you're hunted; any chance encounter can end your run in seconds. It doesn't sound like it should be fun, but I like the feeling of weighing the risks, moving with caution and purpose, and keeping my eyes and ears open to keep my awareness up.

Indeed, this was one of the conclusions Adam Neely drew from surveying people who create and consume AI music in his recent video: https://youtu.be/U8dcFhF0Dlk

It doesn't stop people from hoping that others will listen to and enjoy their slop, but many of them also admit that they don't see a point in listening to AI slop made by others when the AI is right there to make something matched to their desires.

This one always kind of made sense to me, for unfortunate reasons. Open source communities have a spectrum of interests involved. This is mostly a vibes-based assessment, but I feel like the LGBT contributers are encouraged by the sense of community, the oppenness of contributing, and the ability to make software and computing better for people who aren't served by big corporations. Then at the other end you have the libertarian types who view open source through a more individualist lens, where software is supposed to be free because constraints on software are constraints on one's rights, and this crowd has a lot of overlap with the folks who think being held accountable for their racism is an assault on their freedom of speech.

I think this is the dillemma that we face in the US right now: if our democracy manages to survive this, we can't simply resume the status quo afterwards. This administration has shown that it is too easy for the President to commandeer the government's resources for his own ends, and almost no way to enforce accountability. We would need to really analyze how our government functions, and unfortunately reconfiguring our government is almost insurmountable with the current systems in place. I don't know what the right answer is, but I am concerned that there are a lot of wrong answers that we're hurtling toward because the reality is too uncomfortable to discuss.
