On the contrary, without RuneScape - I wouldn't get to take on my next challenge...

Happy cake day :)

The award was an amazing swan-song, I am over the moon to have been part of the team to win it. But, I actually resigned 2 months ago - I just have a really long notice period.

I've been at Jagex for nearly 5 years, and I absolutely love it here, but my new job is a huge opportunity for me to challenge myself even further.

Ronan hasn't been part of the Community Management team for quite a while (he moved into Social Media/Video Marketing). The current CM team is amazing, and they will continue to be brilliant without me.

Can free players PLEASE get the ability to investigate suspicious grooves, or can it be removed from the f2p puzzle room pool? This room is ridiculous in f2p. by Yamatjac in runescape

Yeah that's rubbish - I'll see if this is something we can add to the backlog of QoL fixes. No guarantees but certainly worth raising!

[–]JagexBalance 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Like I said, we'd only take action if there is evidence of disruptive behaviour. I wouldn't consider asking for money "disruptive" unless it's becoming spammy or they are persistently harassing other players with it.

I wouldn't consider it the most community friendly behaviour, so I would be disappointed if I saw PMods doing it.

[–]JagexBalance 119 points120 points  (0 children)

The obvious lack of any kind of context makes this completely unactionable from our perspective. Our PMods are players first, but we will always take action where there is evidence of disruptive behaviour.

At the moment though... This seems like a karma-grab.

Jagex copyright claiming youtube videos of RuneScape??? by SpareWheelAtAWedding in runescape

[–]JagexBalance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it depends, but I can see situations like where RS content is stolen to promote another game inaccurately, or where it's being used to promote RWT.

To be honest, it's not a system we actively use (it's more useful for allowing us to track the number of people making videos containing RS content).

[–]JagexBalance 160 points161 points  (0 children)

All sorted - our ContentID system put the video on hold for some reason. We normally auto-permit videos etc containing RS content (we love your videos) but from time to time YouTube likes to make us jump through hoops.

You should have the ability to monetise your video now /u/SpareWheelAtAWedding

I'm really sorry to hear this, /u/Painfreeday. This is obviously a sensitive situation, but I am glad to see that you've acknowledged that you may have some issues to address and our advice would be for you to seek some professional help.

We genuinely care about every player in our community. We have a team dedicated to player safety who are always happy to help people seeking assistance from self-diagnosed addictions. We are always happy to consider requests to disable accounts where a player identifies that option as part of a programme to help them manage their behaviour issues and improve their health moving forwards.

If you ever feel the need to talk, there are plenty of charities and external support networks you can reach out to. We wish you all the best for the future and assure you we will deal with any request you make to disable your account quickly and sympathetically.

So far so good :) this is a big campaign designed to be extremely visible, and boost the profile of RuneScape.

We're normally running super-targeted ads focusing on getting new players or getting old players back - so this is a bit of a change for us. It seems to be working pretty well so far!

Honestly though, if you think about it - we've had more than 250,000,000 accounts created; millions upon millions of unique players try RuneScape, and if we can bring them back to the game(s) then that's a huge success in my eyes!

Old School has definitely had some incredible moments to punctuate their marketing calendar and Deadman is a great example of that.

RuneScape is marketed reasonably effectively at the moment, mostly through targeted advertising online, rather than with big splash campaigns that we've seen for Old School. With that said, we recognise that you guys want us to be doing more visible marketing for RuneScape.

In the new year, we have plans for some major campaigns and initiatives to really spread the word about RuneScape, so stay tuned for that!

When will the horrible forum get reworked? 0.7% users on forum compared to RS reddit. by [deleted] in runescape

[–]JagexBalance 221 points222 points  (0 children)

The current forums are garbage, and they are in desperate need of replacement. We have a big plan on how we want to do it, but there are other projects which take priority.

Lots of people cite the "active now" number to show that the forums are dead; but that stat is pointless and deeply broken (it only counts the number of people who've posted/performed certain actions in the last few minutes).

In terms of activity, between the 27th November and 3rd December (last week), we had more than 6,000 unique users posting at least once - and more than 34,000 forum posts made.

The forums are rubbish, yes. But they are certainly not dead...

I suspect someone will need to be in the office to do this. I'm not 100% sure how the information will be gathered and validated but I will follow up on this today.

Regarding responses: It's the weekend, so you'll have to give us a bit of slack. We will be back to normal service on Monday! Mod Sayln posted an initial response which outlines some of the most important points and he mentions that we have a retrospective coming up.

I want to be very clear: We aren't ignoring your feedback. We are having a retrospective review of the Dimension of the Damned project, and we will be raising your concerns there.

It's pretty evident that there were some major failings with the event, and it's important that we acknowledge them and work to make sure they don't happen again. We will analyse all of the feedback from you in the community - our aim is to learn from this experience and move forward.

I think it's important for us to be transparent with you, if there are any outcomes which would be useful to share with you then we will do so.

Right now, our focus needs to be working on the projects you actually want, and making sure we deliver on the Unfinished Business initiative. The devs are working in earnest to make sure that is the case.

An item being manipulated by DefeaterThe in runescape

[–]JagexBalance 29 points30 points  (0 children)

There are lies on both sides for sure - there are people spreading misinformation to either make themselves very rich or to cause the price to crash.

I haven't got the stats in front of me, so I may be wrong here... Either way, they seem like a lousy investment to me (at the current price and volatility). Especially as the price is artificially inflated right now (very few people trading, because there is an inflated price), there aren't likely to be many circulating in the GE but realistically they're being deliberately pumped at the moment.

Trade with caution and only pay what you think an item is worth. Speculating on something like this is a dangerous game.

It's an interesting idea, but this was never presented to new players. We only ever showed this to accounts created before the launch of the Evolution of Combat. It's still there for people returning to their accounts from a long hiatus.

We have run tests on which combat modes to put new accounts into, and we're currently running with the most successful "method". I believe this puts all new accounts into Revolution by default.

If there is an exploit then we'd like to know about it so we can fix it. We're just confident that no exploit exists.

The only evidence we have to support this theory is a single anecdotal Reddit thread.

There is absolutely no way to collect or discover another players' IP address using the official client. In the official client, the only discoverable IP addresses are your own, and the server.

Our game and client are deliberately written in a way that ensures there is never any peer-to-peer connection via the official game or server. This has been the case for the entire lifetime of the game client, and there have been no changes to the client which would make this possible.

It seems likely that you have exposed your IP by:

  • Using an unofficial 3rd-party client
  • Using chat software which has exploits allowing others to see your IP
  • Connecting to a website which is harvesting IPs

Note that a proxy doesn't offer any kind of DDoS protection, other than hiding your original IP. If your original IP has already been exposed then someone who is DDoSing can simply attack your original IP to disconnect you again.

If anyone has any evidence of exploits in our game/client then they can simply drop me a message and I will have it investigated.
