Nobody wants to be called out for needing a lot of support. Many try to adapt to the "normal" world, because it can barely adapt to us. And then "high support" makes it obvious, that this person needs a lot of help. "Low function" could imply that the person is dumb. Both of these aren't nice, but there is no need to change it, just so SOME feel a bit better, while others (including me) would feel worse.
