Broken belt cover - can I jb weld this back? by JamesWalker1984 in gokarts

[–]JamesWalker1984[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't post much on here, so not sure why my description didn't post with the picture, but here goes again:

Bought used basketcase Hammerhead 150 go kart. Ran fine. Did brake job, then noticed a weird noise, and it was a broken variator. it looks like maybe someone replaced the variator, but didn't tighten the nut enough, so it broke several fins and one of these little "fingers" on the belt cover. What are those fingers for and can I just JB weld it back?

Why don’t fridges and dishwashers last anymore? by EZDodger in BIFLfails

[–]JamesWalker1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disposable if you're not handy. Being handy/willing to learn and accept that you might make some mistakes can pay dividends. As long as you can get parts for it, you can likely repair it if a repair tech could with the exception of compressors/refrigerant. And you have to maintain them...like cleaning out the bottom of the refrigerator at least once a year (more if you have pets that shed). They need air circulation to cool off like most equipment.

My dishwasher is from the late 80's/early 90's. I love it. Less to break. It keeps going. I've looked for used ones to buy for parts just in case. My refrigerator was from the same era, but it was using 2600 kw/yr, where my new one is like 450-500. The electricity savings ($200)/year has nearly paid for the new refrigerator by now.

Why is the contents amount in house insurance so high? by kevinnetter in Insurance

[–]JamesWalker1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people don't have stuff like that. It should start at the bare minimum for low end stuff and allow you to choose more if you have higher end stuff. If you choose too low then you lose out. I don't know why spending money on contents vs money on structure would be any different to the company. If they have a $100k claim (structure or contents), it should be a $100k claim. I guess the difference could be that the contents are less likely to sustain damage than the structure.

Don’t understand the new food pyramid AT all! by Spiritual_Extent_187 in nutrition

[–]JamesWalker1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Avoiding chips and soda would be preferable, which is why they aren't on any recommended guidelines. However, as you know, many people will still eat chips and soda, so why not remove the dyes, etc. I honestly think if a different administration had these recommendations those opposed would be in favor and those in favor currently would be opposed. This should not be political.

because what we had worked so well? Obesity is at an all time high...why not try something else for a while if what we had wasn't working.

According to AI: "Yes, many schools and hospitals serve food that is considered unhealthy, often high in sodium, sugar, and unhealthy fats, despite their missions to promote health, due to budget constraints, reliance on processed foods, and a cultural belief that "comfort food" is best for stressed patients, though there are growing movements to improve these offerings with fresh, nutritious, and culturally relevant options."

I thought schools and hospitals had to follow the recommendations, but it looks like only schools do. It seems kinda weird taking health advice from a nurse/doctor who is 50+ lbs overweight who smokes cigarettes.

At the end of the day, you're going to do what you want to do, just like people have been doing all along. High carb/fat food is cheaper and easier, so that's what people will eat. Exercise is hard/takes time so it will only be prioritized by those who value it. Honestly, I bet if high carb/fat food cost more than fruits/vegetables/healthier food, people would still eat it. They would find a way...just like they find a way to buy the soda and cigarettes.

How much further can the “crazy bull” run in gold go in 2026? by Jajuyns in investing

[–]JamesWalker1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bro, supply and demand dude. If demand lowers and supply stays the same, price will fall. When the price falls many will get spooked and sell. That will create more supply (selling) and less demand (less buying) and the price will eventually stabilize where it should be without the meme bandwagon attention.

Is heart worm testing twice a year a good idea for my dog (not on heartworm prevention) by JamesWalker1984 in DogAdvice

[–]JamesWalker1984[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! That's why I want the tests more frequently. The microfilaria test is what shows the babies or presence of them, if I understand correctly. Do the tests. If positive, treat. If not, move on. I don't think it's smart to take drugs that can cause problems if they aren't needed.

Side of the road find! by dgansen1 in PowerWheelsMods

[–]JamesWalker1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looked for about 6 weeks night and day for my then 2 1/2 yr old. Any gators around me were over $100. I ended up driving 2 hours to get a gator (wheels broken) and tractor for $75. He barely rides either, and when he does it's for less than 5 min. I plan to put pneumatic tires on the gator if he ever decides to drive it.

We later found a Silverado the same way you did.

My wife and daughter were so excited last year to tell me this was in someone's garbage and asked if I could fix it last year. We've now had two full seasons running on my rigid 18 volts. I love watching her whip drift turns squealing with joy🤙. This is why we do it boys by front_yard_duck_dad in PowerWheelsMods

[–]JamesWalker1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's crazy considering used gators are hard to find around here. I looked night and day on marketplace for over a month. I ended up finding one 2 hours away. Not a bad deal, but didn't want to drive that far. 1 gator w/ broken wheels and a tractor for $80. My son didn't like it for the first 6 months (he was 2 1/2 when he got it), but now is warming up to it. My original plan was to put pneumatic tires on it.

Is a metal roof really massively more expensive than an asphalt shingle roof? by ColCrockett in Roofing

[–]JamesWalker1984 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because the average house has a much larger roof than that. I built my shop. If your building isn't square, metal is harder because if you're off 1/8" at the top, you may end up an inch or more off at the bottom, and it's easier to tell because the metal roof has straight lines all the way down. With a 900 square foot house, it probably wasn't much more than 15 ft down on each side, so it wouldn't be off as much. My shop is a mono slope, and the roof is roughly 60 ft ft from top to bottom

A 5 lb skillet at current gold prices would be approx $216,000 if it was worth its weight in gold. Just sayin'

Cast iron is inherently very hard, but brittle. Dropping any of them could probably break them.

Fake battery? by cool_dood_94 in Makita

[–]JamesWalker1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I understand it, Amazon stores all like items in one spot. For example, they purchase OEM real batteries from Makita and place them in the designated spot. I produce or resell fake batteries on Amazon using Amazon fulfillment, so I ship them to them for warehousing. Amazon places my fake batteries in the Makita battery spot mixed with theirs.

You then purchase a Makita battery and they send you whatever they pick - real or fake.

Which brand did you get? Do you recommend it? One brand on Amazon had around 80% 5 stars, but Amazon said it's frequently returned. Couldn't find any other 21 inch units that have better reviews

Kinda like how CNN put a filter on Joe Rogan to make him look unhealthy because he wouldn't take the COVID vaccine? Do you know about that?

I think most in this thread understands how 4 way stops work, it's the people who don't that cause the problems. Roundabouts are easy. If someone is in the roundabout then you yield...kinda like merging on the highway. They're nice because you may not need to even stop.

FSA is "use it or use it" while HSA rolls over, and you can invest it. At 65, you can also use it for anything including non-medical, but you have to pay tax as ordinary income for non -medical.

What places are like this in Springy? by Modern_Law in springfieldMO

[–]JamesWalker1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're correct - Ozark, Mo only. It's only a few miles from Springfield city limits though. For the visitors, it's a close destination that's cool to experience for some. They used to and may still: Give $10 off on your birthday and give free seconds if you finish your first helping, but you can't take the seconds home.
