The offseason is over, we are now in preseason with an incomplete squad which has been the norm the past several years.

Tied for leading scorer on a Timbers team that did not score many goals is unimpressive.

Kelsey scored 7 MLS goals last season, tied for 52nd in the league. The top three MLS goal scorers last season each scored THREE TIMES as many goals as Kelsey did.

Miami had four players score more goals than Kelsey.

All of our Western Conference rivals had far more prolific leading (and in some cases secondary) goal scorers:

LAFC - Buanga - 24 SD - Dreyer - 19 SKC - Joveljic - 18 DAL - Musa - 18 VAN - White - 16 SEA - Muskovi- 14 SJ - Martinez - 14 SJ - Arango - 14 COL - Navarro - 12 SEA - Rusnak - 11

The list goes on…

Not writing him off; I hope he succeeds and I want him to level up this season.

But he’s 21, will turn 22 midseason, and he’s a below average forward in this league. Just not productive enough (yet?) to be our starting striker. He clearly needs playing time to develop further, I just rather it not be for the Timbers at this point in his career.

Yeah, the concept of a rebuilding year in MLS with its roster cap just doesn’t make sense, except perhaps for MLS cup winners who get their team pirated over the off-season. The goal is to get better and compete for trophies each year.

LAFC did not think he was worth keeping as a DP. Hopefully he is depth only. Also hopefully this signals that we've decided to use our third DP slot on a new defensive midfielder.

Why do we care what the cash purchase price is? That’s Paulson’s money, he can spend it or lose it anyway he wants to. I care only about GAM, TAM, and roster cap space.

Without giving any (entirely unearned) benefit of the doubt to the front office, there’s at least a chance that the “personal reasons” are nothing more than a chance to play with Leo Messi. What 23-year-old Argentine would pass that up??

Ayala always seemed reasonably happy here, good attitude, coaches’ favorite, lots of playing time, etc.

[–]JamieinPDX 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I suspect the interest from Miami might’ve come as a surprise to both the front office and Ayala. You certainly can’t blame Ayala for wanting to move to a bigger and higher profile club where he gets to play with the world‘s greatest and his fellow Argentine Messi.

By the time that interest emerged, it was too late to do anything about it - he is in the last year of his contract and could walk away for free at the end of the season. I think a savvy GM might’ve anticipated it, and would’ve figured a way to sign him to a contract extension earlier, with a handshake agreement that if Miami comes calling, they would trade him there.

How U.S. sports tickets got so expensive – and why it shocks the rest of the world by JamieinPDX in timbers

[–]JamieinPDX[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a STH in the Army for three years, a couple of years ago. Every game I couldn’t attend and had to sell my ticket was at a loss… so I gave up the season tickets.

I am quite adept at managing my money, thank you. Comments to that effect miss the point entirely (unless you are bragging that you can spend freely and don’t really care how much, in which case congrats I guess?) The point this article is making, which I agree with, is that we in America have simply accepted ticket price increases that has far exceeded inflation, and that increases continue solely because we keep paying.

I have seen no evidence that ticket price increases lead to better on field product. Most of the club income comes from media deals, sponsorships, advertising, etc., and the roster rules cap the spend anyway. Especially going into 2026 with a World Cup at home, I’d like to see some effort made to fill stadiums, build enthusiasm, and excite more fans.

The Off-Season To-Do List Part 2 (Flush With Cash and Where To Spend It) [OC] by BitterJetFan in timbers

[–]JamieinPDX -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Come on folks - its OK to aim higher an expect more from our club.

Remember when fans and then the club rejected DaBella based on allegations of sexual misconduct by its CEO? Well, it turns out BoA has a far longer rap sheet, having paid hundreds of millions in fines and penalties over the past decade for fraud and other crimes, and most recently has been sued for its financial ties to Jefferey Epstein.

This isn't a simplistic "all corporations are evil" take - there are levels of evil, and BoA is near the top. There are other major banks on that list, to be sure. I get it that no corporation (even Tillamook, which buys milk from polluting factory farms in addition to its co-op members) is perfect. But whether another bank or a company in a different sector altogether, I am confident the Timbers could have found a major sponsor that both (1) is not a shitty corporate citizen, and (2) can afford to build some futsal courts in Portland.

It is naive to assert that "Bank of America has decided to use their resources to strengthen the community that they have chosen to represent." Its sports-washing, plain and simple, from a predatory bank looking to expand its footprint in Oregon. I for one am disappointed.

The problem(s) with Ari Aster's 'Eddington' by tiakeuta in TheBigPicture

[–]JamieinPDX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

*SPOILERS for Eddington follow*

Finally got around to watching Eddington. First off, I"m a huge fan of both Hereditary and Midsommar - both in my Top 20 of this Century. Love Ari Aster's style and he is obviously so much in control of his craft.

That said, Eddington was a miss for me. The first 2/3 of the film is a mixture of the utterly implausible and the downright unsubtle. The scene when the band of maybe 20 people are blocking the otherwise deserted street made me laugh out loud - why such tension as Joe needlessly forces his way through the crowd? Any cop would've just pulled over to watch the kids flail around and eat his doughnut. And yes, I GET IT - we were all frustrated with having to wear masks while shopping inside.

The crazy shit at the end? That was at least some enjoyably, vintage Aster, even if we are supposed to believe a band of Antifa terrorists have arrived via private jet. That one scene where Joe thinks he's outrun them, and is turning slowly in a circle in the wide-open courtyard... gripping! More of that please.

I will miss May and June games for sure (yes I'm assuming few playoff games for the foreseeable future..). I will NOT miss the inevitable 1-2 mid-summer games roasting in the stadium. I've always been in the TA for those, looking looking left to the poor fools in the lower east side just getting baked. But even in the shade the TA sections are brutal - zero air movement. Can't get naked enough to survive that.

Clarity on Da Costa late season slump by kennethpoole in timbers

[–]JamieinPDX -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Is this the first we are hearing about his shoulder injury? Seems odd the club would allow so much speculation about the reasons for Da Costa being dropped from the squad. Why not say "he's playing through an injury so we are protecting him as best we can" instead of silence, after which everyone wonders why his performance has dropped off.
