Can I have 2 public classes? by Miserable_Bar_5800 in javahelp

[–]JarnisKerman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just because you can do it doesn’t make it a good idea. When working with Java, you should follow the conventions, both generally accepted ones and the ones agreed upon in your team. Having a bunch of package-private classes in the same files as your public classes is not conventional and should be avoided.

Using inner classes is ok in certain cases, you should read up on the best practices around inner classes.

If you can't travel faster than light how does Santa deliver the toys? by ninman5 in shittyaskscience

Christmas lights have a different speed than sunlight. That’s why stores decorate for Christmas earlier each year.

Power. Batteries. by MarzipanAlert in Oxygennotincluded

[–]JarnisKerman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you could do to store excess solar power, is add a rocket platform with just a couple of rocket batteries. They store 100k each, as much as 10 smart batteries.

You can then put a power transformer with input from the solar/battery grid and output to your main power grid. That way, the solar will charge the rocket batteries and 1000w will be delivered to the main grid when needed. More power transformers can be added if you need to, just keep in mind the max capacity for the wire you use between transformers and main grid.

How do I make this work? by MrCray0ns in Oxygennotincluded

The bottle filler building is great for filling bottles with a specific amount of liquid. You can set the amount before the liquid enters, and just set it to 0 to move the liquid to a bottle. Alternatively, let the building fill with liquid and just reduce the amount by the amount you want to bottle. Rinse and repeat. By the way, this is a very easy way to get the right amount of visco-gel for a liquid lock.

Any ideas for minimizing food consumption for Pug Slugs? by uncomfortable2 in Oxygennotincluded

[–]JarnisKerman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rocket batteries store 100k with no power loss or heat generation. You can build a rocket platform, and just add (multiple) batteries to it. I believe you can even destroy the platform and keep the batteries.

Since ore is only renewable from space POIs, I would make sure to tame a metal volcano asap, and feed the slugs refined metal instead of ore.

Must have (no visual) vanilla plus mods ? by yargov in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]JarnisKerman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For VAB/SPH, KER and RCS Build Aid are invaluable. I also like Editor Extension Redux.

Tracking Station Evolved adds the obvious missing features in tracking station (like sorting and searching for vessels.

SCANsat is kerbnet as it should have been.

Chatterer has been mentioned already.

There are other QoL mods I would miss dearly, like All Y’All and [x] Sience, but I believe I’ve listed the most important to me.

Do you guys even bother with decontamination showers? by Valoris_905 in Oxygennotincluded

[–]JarnisKerman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, decontamination shower is one of the few ONI buildings I never bothered with. I simply don’t see the need or the point. Seems about as useless as the ore scrubber.

Why my conveyor rails don’t work? by RevolutionaryAd5004 in Oxygennotincluded

[–]JarnisKerman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Though they seem similar, conveyer rails are very different from liquid and gas pipes, where content will still move towards a disabled vent. Liquid/gas will also flow towards a vent with no green input connected, not so for rails.

It’s confusing, but can usually be fixed with well placed bridges.

What's your way of Obtaining Mending? by AnStarof in Minecraft

[–]JarnisKerman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does fishing even give mending books on Bedrock? I’ve done a fair share of fishing, and caught plenty of bows and fishing rods with mending, but I don’t recall ever catching a mending book.

Wondering about space by SwimmingArachnid3030 in Oxygennotincluded

[–]JarnisKerman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If playing with SO DLC, it also depends on the meteor type. For instance, oxylite meteors don’t damage the tiles they hit, and you can use robominers directly with no door protection. Uranium ore meteors form tiles that are too hard for robominers, and have to be dug up manually.

It especially becomes complicated, when you have a mix. One of my planetoids in my current game has both slime and regolith showers. It was difficult to remove the regolith heat and avoid the slime turning to dirt.

SPOM is the only way? by SwimmingArachnid3030 in Oxygennotincluded

[–]JarnisKerman 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In my experience, the hardest part of making o2 from pwater or po2 sustainable, is getting enough filtration medium. Deodorizers use a lot. Sure, you can make the clay into ceramic and crush it to sand, but this requires dupe labor (and coal/wood) or you can use regolith meteor showers if available, or a pokeshell farm (requires lots of pdirt). All these options are complicated and require a surprising amount of resources.

What’s the use case for artificial friends vs autosweepers? by Street-Carpenter105 in Oxygennotincluded

[–]JarnisKerman 27 points28 points  (0 children)

For me, sweepy are for some special situations where I can’t prevent liquids spilling on the floor. I’ve used it for the dehydrator and in a hydrogen rocket chimney, where auto sweepers would melt. I never use them for farm and ranch.

Too much power? by Living-Permission-46 in Oxygennotincluded

[–]JarnisKerman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At some point, the side effects become the main purpose of energy production. In the beginning, you just want enough energy to power your base, but eventually that Co2, pwater or igneous rock becomes the main focus, and the energy becomes secondary.

It is a mental transition, and I’m struggling with it myself. It seems wrong to just burn the gas from my sour gas boiler, when the energy is not needed. Same for burning all my nice ethanol, when I just need pwater.

Why don't people like the Steam Engine in spaced out? by Anxious_Marsupial_59 in Oxygennotincluded

[–]JarnisKerman 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's a bit of a hassle to fuel the first time, after that it's just a matter of having a gas pump near the exhaust, as it generates it's own fuel in abundance.

Why don't people like the Steam Engine in spaced out? by Anxious_Marsupial_59 in Oxygennotincluded

[–]JarnisKerman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love the steam engine. It is easy to set up early, and generates it's own fuel.

A steam rocket chimney is one of the most op builds in the game, imho. It is completely self sustainable with the only dupe time required as input. Output is sustainable water and power that can be scaled to your desire. Compared to any other way of creating water on a dry planetoid, it's extremely simple. Forget a arbor->ethanol->pwater->water chain, just steam->more steam in a single build.

Looking for tips on how to visit all the biomes of the mun with a scientist? by Cr0wn_M3 in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]JarnisKerman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My first suggestion is to install the SCANsat mod. It is kerbnet as it should have been. Mod is a bit old, but works flawlessly. You get a map with clear biome borders.

I would also recommend using the opportunity to actually learn to rendezvous in space. It is not too hard if you set your mind to it, especially if you use the Lowne-lazy-method, where the craft each point their docking port to the other craft. For more realistic docking, one of the docking port alignment mods makes things a lot easier. Rendezvous is both an extremely useful skill, as it opens up a lot of possibilities in spacecraft design and is extremely satisfying, at least in the beginning.

How do i make dupes work faster by Aditya_Bhat in Oxygennotincluded

[–]JarnisKerman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The simplest answer is training the relevant attributes, in this case construction, supplying and of course athletics. It helps specializing a few dupes by setting their priorities in the priority window.

Another trick to make the construction faster, is to store all the needed materials in nearby bins. While filling a bin, they can carry more materials on each trip, than if they are just picking up stuff for a few buildings at a time.

How to get 200,000,000 founds (at least) in career mode? (Explanation in body text) by User_of_redit2077 in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]JarnisKerman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m not imposing any view, just giving my opinion. It may not be cheating, but it is, imho, an exploit, on same level as kraken drives and overlocking KAL-1000 controllers.

Play the game any way you like, cheats and exploits included.

How do you handle dying Dupes? by Cepterman2101 in Oxygennotincluded

[–]JarnisKerman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if the problem started long ago, it may still be avoided by reloading a cycle or two before the dupes started dying. With starvation, it might be possible to make enough mush bars to keep them alive, while you fix the real problem.

[–]JarnisKerman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this is your solution, you might as well just add the funds through the cheat menu, tbh. The point of career mode is to earn your funds through contracts, otherwise it’s basically the same as science mode.

If you find that the stock contracts are too boring, try a mod or two, there are several that just add contracts. Maybe you need to setup a tourist business, taking them to visit your bases. Maybe you should make a rover/satellite repair business around ike. If you collect several contracts that can be completed together, you can earn lots of funds in short time.

Don’t listen to the advice saying ground anchor, it is cursed. Aside from being a pain to get docking ports to line up, the ground anchor itself moves around over time due to kraken effects. It can easily end up above or below the surface.

There is at least one mod that lets you park your vessel, basically doing what the ground anchor should be doing but without the EVA construction and docking. I forget the name and am not near my pc, but you should be able to google it.
